I've tried kopete several times, and it is comming along quite nicely, but the one HUGE option that it does not have is autoreconnect. All of the IM protocols I use disconnect on a regular basis, and with kopete I keep having to open the budy window to see if I'm online. If they added that one feature I would seriously concider switching.
Well as soon as they realize that they can get a middleman for their product for $5 in their own country, and buy him an inexpensive coach class ticket over here then you will be out of a job like the rest of us. And we won't be crying for you either.
I haven't read every post, but most of the modded ones, and did not see even one that pointed out that what they are replacing their workstations with is Intel Xeons with 64 bit extension, and go on to make it sound like intel created this and AMD followed in their footsteps, which is definitely not the case.
Well I guess you missed the part right before that where he listed like 5 other things than prelinking, and yes some of those other items can take quite some time.
If you have a sempron 3100+ and can't get mythtv to compile in 20min something is seriously wrong. With a proper script you could probably compile all of the myth modules in 20min on that hardware. Although the 20min they were talking about was to install knoppmyth which just dumps everything from the cd and does a bit of configuration, and after going through it a couple of times on well suported hardware can be accomplished in 20min.
This fonts thing is really getting old. I don't know what you did with your install, but I'm using debian unstable, and I haven't done any kind of special font tweaking and my fonts look fine. As a matter of fact I normally wonder what everyone is talking about when they talk about bad fonts, because I never used to notice it, but I happened to be booted into my win2k partition on this machine ( still just lying around never gets used, but just happened to be in there today) and it really struck me that hey these fonts are horrible. Which really surprised me, cause I usually don't notice that type of thing, I guess it was because I was moving to Linux full time a couple of years back from win2k, and the state of fonts was similar at the time.
As for the java if you had taken just a smidgen of time to research you would have found blackdown which is ibm's version of java has a debian repository, and you can apt-get install from there just fine.
Well my mythtv box never freezes. and I would highly suspect the reason yours does has to do with the fact that you said code is at 0.16, when in fact 0.15.1 is the latest, and the only way to get 0.16 features is to run CVS which will of course be buggy as it's development code.
Well as the article mentions it would have been easier to do with a distrobution that is designed for the purpose, and guess what one does exist its called knoppmyth, and can be found at http://www.mysettopbox.tv/.
With Knoppmyth and supported hardware it is quite possible to setup a mythtv system in about one half hour and not have to worry about all the configuration mentioned in the origional post.
actually it's the game that is biased towards nvidia, and you can't really blame ID for that, because it is an OpenGL game and nvidia just has better OpenGL drivers than ATI no matter what anyone says.
It is much like where the GPL says: "You do not have to accept this licence, however this licence is the only thing permitting you distributing this software... etc." Either give up your cool subscription or choose not to excercise your GPL granted freedoms.
Right here you just proved your point about the dual licence wrong. He recieved this code under GPL and the only way he is permited to redistribute it is under the GPL it doesn't say if you don't accept this licence then just distribute it under another one or another one and this one.
Hello some of us already have HDTV's and don't want to just whaste the money we spent on them. You know there are probably 5 million sets out there with only component input.
Actually They would have a hard time getting used to it, because the reason they have all the spyware and viruses is usually because they are the ones that want to install every casino game and toolbar they come across. They want every cutsie little toy that can be had, and none of those will install and run on linux, which will make them think linux is broken and doesn't work right.
Don't get me wrong I know why these things don't install and run on linux and I never think they should, it's just that your average joe ID10T will think the fact that they don't makes linux broken. What needs to happen is for users to become educated, but I don't see that happening.
Yes not to mention that the only way I see to get this software is purchasing this distrobution. I went to cyberlinks webpages and no mention whatsoever of a linux version.
WoW!!! Seeing this explanation of how easily you can get packages for Mandrake systems Just makes me remember why I use debian.
I never want to have to deal with an RPM based system again. People keep telling me oh no it's sooo much better now with urpmi and apt-get for rpm, but from what you just wrote it just isn't good enough.
I'm sorry, those shows may have been recorded from HDTV input, but there is positively no way that full resolution HDTV content with 5.1 sound can be compressed down to 350 Mb/hour no matter what codec you use.
As sad as it is to say the most standards compliant browser, with the most CSS support anywhere is MSN for MAC. Just have that team port it over to windows, and strip out all the MSN garbage.
Well 6 hours is nothing compared to trying to get one of the SWAN's setup for roadwarior mode. I work with IPSEC implemintations from numerous vendors on a daily basis, and I spent almost two weeks trying to get FreeSWAN to do road warrior before I just gave up to wait for someone to actually write an IPSEC client for linux, and that was over a year ago, and still even with ipsec built into the 2.6 kernel no one has.
This is one area where I think one of the commercial distrobutions could easily differentiate themselves from the pack, but no signs of it yet.

I have to second the 3ware vote. the drivers for these cards have been in the linux kernel since 2.2, and they come stock in windows 2000 on so no haveing to load a driver disk to get things installed, and the performance is great to boot.
It can do file transfers with windows aim client. It just can't do them when both parties are behind NAT with no ports forwarded.

well maybe, but at least doom3 will run on my computer, while far cry is nothing more than a slide show.
If you are answering that question with a number then you have already lost the negotiations.

Sure did, but only 10 posts and already /. effect has kicked in.
Hello some of us already have HDTV's and don't want to just whaste the money we spent on them. You know there are probably 5 million sets out there with only component input.
Does anyone know more about the component outputs?
from the pictures it looked like it was an adapter that went to the svideo port, however from the small picture they had it was hard to tell.
I really don't know all that much about the video standards and wiring capacities, but I thought svideo couldn't cary hdtv signals.
