So for my 60GB iPog 5G that means: transcode all content in 640x480 h.264 after download please. Oh - and WiFi sync with my TV in the apropiate format as well while you are at it. Is this too much to ask?

And besides: am I to belive that this guy is not sleeping at all? How does he know that his kid is in trouble if he does? Come on - this is such a lame excuse to come up with a dead-man's-switch.

If one really needs to make sure that one is ok in 30mins intervals it is way easier to build a system that requires the push of a button to reset a 30mins timer before calling the cops or something.

Not so fast... You may want to check out the Theories of Burkhard Heim and its applications to space propulsion.

Why care what he has to say? Well - for one Heims theory apparently is the only theory which yields remarkably exact theoretical values for the masses, the resonances, and the mean lifetimes of elementary particles, as well as the Sommerfeld fine structure constant.

If his calculations are correct a flight over 10 light-years could be done in roughly 80 days - 160 days roundtrip.

Extraordinary claims that require extraordinary proof indeed. However, if I got US 1.5 Billion and would be thinking about exploring space I would not mind spending a few million to go about proving/disproving them...

It would be truly priceless if we will look back in history in 20 years and refer to these events and the years to come as paradigm shift in how to morally present ones views.

In any case, it is a very welcome development and only good can come from it.

Why is everyone getting all upset now that Linus is following suit? Am I the only one that realizes this? Go read http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/why-assign.html for details. Copied text below: Why the FSF gets copyright assignments from contributors by Professor Eben Moglen, Columbia University Law School Under US copyright law, which is the law under which most free software programs have historically been first published, there are very substantial procedural advantages to registration of copyright. And despite the broad right of distribution conveyed by the GPL, enforcement of copyright is generally not possible for distributors: only the copyright holder or someone having assignment of the copyright can enforce the license. If there are multiple authors of a copyrighted work, successful enforcement depends on having the cooperation of all authors. In order to make sure that all of our copyrights can meet the recordkeeping and other requirements of registration, and in order to be able to enforce the GPL most effectively, FSF requires that each author of code incorporated in FSF projects provide a copyright assignment, and, where appropriate, a disclaimer of any work-for-hire ownership claims by the programmer's employer. That way we can be sure that all the code in FSF projects is free code, whose freedom we can most effectively protect, and therefore on which other developers can completely rely.
