oh you could replace it with another language that is easier to use. No more grep and awk with cryptic flags that are hard to remember. For example "Find all files in current folder starting with J and ending with.zip" The command line could even pick up some GUI elements such as open/save dialogs and directory listings to make it easier to select folders and files
oh dear no. We can basically forget about people who still don't use computers. I have a 6 year old cousin. I watched how he was able to pick his favorite game from a very cluttered Start menu. (the funny thing was watching him click start and navigate several times because the menu kept vanishing as Windows was still not finished loading) He didn't need flashy huge icons on a desktop. Now if you think you want to spend your time designing or promoting a dumbed down system for people who aren't even interested, I guess that's fine. But I think the real challenge of future UI is to easily cope with the vast amounts of data available on our multi gigabyte hard drives, offline data and of course the internet.
Linux is all about lots of choices including desktops, file systems etc. You're really looking for another kind of OS that is built from top to bottom because the "linux" OS comes from many different groups and there's no way you can squish it all into one group.
that's nonsense. They lost money (a real thing) because you illegally didn't pay for what you owe. With your logic I can simply steal all your cash and just give back the actual value of the paper and ink used to print it. Or is it that you are incapable of abstract thought?
Now, anyone who tries to sell software in Malaysia is a FOOL now that this idiot declared a green light on piracy. Looks like Malaysians will have to accept half baked open source apps and games (oh forget those games completely!) because of this idiot's stupid remarks

Linux will never standardize to one window manager, toolkit, file system, distribution installer, etc. There are even distros that employ various patches that you will never find on the standard official version. The whole point is that there will be many many choices. Many ideas-some completely experimental, some will pull through. Throw away this brewing stew of ideas and you will do a great disservice to the computing world. If you want an alternative to Windows you need to start from scratch. No X, no Unix directory structure...it must be a complete OS from top to bottom and led by software engineers-not coders. I have some projects in mind but that is not the point here. Linux has its place and shouldn't be screwed up with to satisfy people who weren't really interested since the beginning.
the other problem is that those that don't focus on eyecandy suffer from an equally nasty tendency to simply copy the Windows desktop, flaws and all. Isn't it time for something new that doesn't have alien guts all over the windows?
That posting misspelled my last name, and used "linus@transmeta.com" which actually works as an incoming address, but is not my real email address.
The bulk of the posting is true, though - I'm still here, and my status hasn't changed. But I had to tell three friends that they were laid off today, so it was not exactly a good day.
and that's a big deal for all the millions we spend on carpal tunnel syndrome

If that's not proof that Microsoft is evil...I don't know what is!
We've progressed quite a bit while you were sleeping :)
I think you deserve to be modded up

I guess you didn't see Terminator :)

Don't say Linux is free. Say Linux is better and show them why it's more powerful and flexible than Windows. Then you can say "oh and it's also free"
I was wrong. sorry-next time I'll check my facts more thoroughly
I just emailed Linus and he wrote:
Nope, not me.

Nope. Do a search on Linus Thorvalds. It's an alternative spelling
Linus Thorvalds creator of Linux posts on Slashdot and gets marked down as a troll? What kind of moderation is this?
For changing the way we think about computers both in software with Linux and hardware with Transmeta
umm wrongi sts/E99 net_01.html

his real name IS Linus Thorvalds
Yes. and that is the card I'm going to get :) (there's more to graphics cards than just games)
Funny how nobody here seemed to mention Quartz extreme: http://www.apple.com/macosx/jaguar/quartzextreme.h tml
yeah but you have to deal with Microsoft Activation plus the clause in the EULA that gives Microsoft exclusive rights to your eternal soul
yeah he's probably working on a version that requires a 1 ghz CPU and 100 megs of ram
and for some reason many slashdot fans think that's a good thing
my mother probably knows more about computers than you will ever dream of. And no she doesn't need a GUI
