I work for a big pharma company as a sysadmin, and we have to abide by similar rules and laws. Our data recording and data logging has to be proven to be unalterable.
Go with a commercial solution unless you want to battle with the QA and Validation departments for haf a year. And even if you would get the go-ahead (unlikely) you'd get in a hell of a lot of trouble during an audit because auditors a) don't know your solution and b) they will quickly see that it is not certified.
There are specified requirements (don't know the names and numbers by heart) that your solution has to proven to fulfill, and certified by some external party. Just saying 'Yeah but I know it cannot be altered because it is syslog / ' will not cut it.
And non-compliance can eend up costing your company millions if not hundreds of millions. Open source or home grown has it's place, but in a regulated environment you go with commercial for certain things because that is the only option where you get certification with your device / software.
I was a Blakes fan when the show ran in Belgium, 20 years ago or something close to it. I remember the ending scene. Most of the 7 shot down, and what's-his-name being completely surrounded, standing ready with his gun in his hand.... The end...
Not a bad ending actually. Not knowing can make it much more interesting. Like not knowing the contents of the box in 'Ronin' for example.
The kernel is the important one and that particular component is very old and mature.
Really? Because the linux kernel I know had the USB subsystem ripped out and replaced with a new (incompatible) susbsystem several times. That was 2.6. I have seen lots of comments (most on/.) that 2.6 went through some horribly unstable minor releases. With 2.4 I know that some of the releases had an IDE subsystem that was more likely to corrupt your drives than anything else.
The linux kernel is one major work under construction. If you had said e.g. FreeBSD or OpenBSD, then yes, you'd have had a point. They believe in stable releases. Like the GP, I live in the real world. the cost of the OS doesn't mean jack. As for security: none of the systems I maintain have a connection to the outside. I cannot imagine that trading servers have a direct connection either. I know my the computers at my local bank don't.
- It's called User Mode Driver Framework (UMDF). WDM is something totally different. - At the moment, it's only for USB and Firewire drivers AFAIK. - Microsoft doesn't make ANY money from signing drivers. Companies sign drivers themselves, using a certificate they purchase from verisign or another of several trusted certificate suppliers.
- most likely, there will be NO people going to jail. Just because YOU have a vested interest does not make this case any different from 1 megacorp suing another - lawyers are NEVER punished for trying a case on someone else's behalf (as long as they don't do anything actually illegal). this case is not anywhere near as emotionally charged as the trial of Ted bundy, Timothy McVeigh, or that hijacker that did not -factually- hijack a plane. - lawyers like SCO's generally have more than enough work offers, and they charge more per hour than I per day, and I am an expensive consultant. The fact that they represented SCO does not hurt them in the least. - the fact that SCO gets beaten at every turn is NO a fault of their lawyers. SCO has a shitty case, and the lawyers have to work with what they got. they do the best they can, and they should. you'd expect the same from your lawyer, no?
In a far more realistic scenario - IBM takes this all the way and SCO loses big. - IBM's counter claims will maybe turn out in their advantage, but maybe not. - SCO will try to appeal, but this will most likely not have a result because -unlike you- the judges involved kept their cool and did everything by the book, no matter how trivial and dull the issue at hand. - SCO will dwindle away and die. Not because they are evil, but simpy because they alienated their remaining customers, did not invest in developing new technology, and have a gigantic lawyer bill to pay. The latter largely because the SCO lawyers had sense enough to demand payment, instead of a large percentage of a possible settlement.
because (I admit I am rusty on this) as far as ISS and our sattelites are concerned, it doesn't matter whether all the earth's mass is compress in a black hole or not. Gravity wouldn't change from their POV, as long as they are outside the event horizon.
So the aliens would still find those. Maybe before we throw the switch, we should launch a small time capsule with a brittanica DVD or a wiki backup, together with an explanation of what we are about to do.
To debug programs using visual studio, you have to have an administratvie account, OR be part of the 'debuggers' group. The reason for this is that an attacker can do serious harm with a debugger. belonging to the debuggers groups does not give you any other privileges apart from being allowed to debug processes.
But of course, you were too lazy to find this out for yourself, or you knew but decided to troll.
You don't have much experience with female breasts, do you? The areola changes shape and colour depending on temperature, mood and random quantum field fluctuations.
Trying to recognize one would never work.
But then again, this is slashdot, so your ignorance is understandable;-)
We seem to try very hard to draw some inter galactical attention to ourselves, just like any restaurant wanting to attract customers.
the only difference being: we do not sell the food, we are the food.
anyone who has the means of traveling here from outer space outclasses us by several orders of magnitude. thus we are in no bargaining position if we have (or are) something they want.
this raises the question: should we try to make ourselves heard, or should we try to detect others?
It seems such an obvious thing: make a tcp/ip processor, put it on a NIC and give it a high level interface, instead of just a low level IP interface.
makes you wonder why nobody has done it before...
maybe this is some plan of intel to control the internet: add some secret DRM capability to it, wait until everyone until everyone is using it, and then take over the world. Or -door number 2- sell your services to the NSA.
because the department of homeland security will be knocking on his door pronto.
Excuse mr, you have just won a free vacation to the beautiful island of Cuba. do not bother to pack your stuff. everything has been arranged for you.
after that they have to start watching landfills and monitoring scavengers's behavior. "Excuse mr hobo, where do you think you are going with that rusted coathanger? not planing an attach on the pentagon, are we?"
I have to use linux at work as a developer. it has its good sides and its bad sides. so has windows. some tools are better on linux, some on windows.
but the main advantage on linux is that at least, there is some adherence to standards. most of the protocols are open, and you are basically free to do with it what you want.
if microsoft wants to be 'not hated', they had better start sharing information and decoupling olexpress, media player and iexplorer from windows.
i think that the OS market is a bit like fine sand in their hands: the more you try to hold onto it by force, the faster it slips away.
Since the 2.6 kernel and better USB support, linux is becoming a feasible alternative for businesses, and microsoft is scared as hell of that.
i bet that we will start seeing more huggy type marketing as longhorn nears its release.
Boeing is being sponsored by the US govt too, so don't give me that holier than thou bullshit.
there has been a years long dispute between boeing and airbus. airbus got sponsored while boeing got govt loans with 0 interest, or loans they didn't need pay back (sonthing like it anyway).
imo this is a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
big business buys politicians. always has always will.
if lots of people in the same block start using this?
Is there some sort of auto free-carrier slot detection? because if there isn't, it will be nigh-on impossible to listen to the radio without interference.
The fm-band is pretty full already.at least in europe it is almost completely filled up in the range that all commercial receivers use.
I'd be pretty miffed if i could not receive my favorite radio stations anymore because some people near me like to listen to deutche schlager zangers or techno.
Not only do client requirements change, but management is also responsible for fubaring things.
i have been part of a project (past tense) where: - management delivered a much too low cost estimate in order to get win the bid. - management then expected the project manager and team to meet the deadlines that were doomed in advance. - the software design lead designed a behemoth of a framework full of performance and design issues. - management did not understand that if you have unexplained system behavior, you cannot say when you will have solved the problem. - hardware design was not reviewed, just like software design. this lead to huge problems just before and during acceptance. -near the end of the project, more and more people were reassigned to a new project that has the ability to make the department manager look good to the head office. he wants to move up. In effect, succes of the former project became a more and more distant possibility until failure was assured.
and there are probably some other things that i either forgot or purposly left out (trying to repress memories maybe;)).

Get rid of my central heating system.
:)
In order to heat up the house i just have to play DOOM3 at ultra high quality settings.
If they start supporting dual P4 extreme as well i can even add a water heater for the bathroom.
