    the reason that we focus on mars is that at least on mars we could land a craft without it melting before it touches the ground.

    the temperature on venus is several 100 degrees C, not to mention the storms that rage at speeds near the speed sound, and the fact that the atmosphere would probably corrode the helmet off an astronaut in 30 minutes.

    the density of the surface water drops fast if milions of liters of gas bubbles up to the surface. if the density drops far enough, ships will sink into the ocean because the water pressure drops.

    We can learn to try to see things from the other persons point of view. for instance if i try to utter some valid criticism about linux to my brother i will get flamed no matter what i say. he doesn't even want to hear what i have to say because the great linus is infallible in his eyes. i imagine it is the same when someone tells sharon and arafat that is would be great if they would jsut stop killing each other. always think, then act, and don't be afraid to admit error.

    i have not much experience on linux. the fact that it is still a spare-time project ruled completely at the whim of Linus himself i find very annoying. if he knew what would be best for the community he would assemble a trusted team tat could control the kernel. at home i have recently switched to BeOS. okay i know it is dead but i'm following the open BeOS project. look good. linux is just not up to par with BeOS. man that system rocks. Interfacer. P.S. the biggest threat to linux are the zealots.

    you seriously think that linux can rival solaris? i think you are a little overzealous because there are a vast number of things that suck in linux.     okay i work for a small (30 ppls) engineering company and so far we are still in buisiness with all of our employees and no paycuts, but with customers of us (other big companies) there are some pretty dramatic measures taken. fot instance with company X they cancelled all en of year bonusses (13 th month) and everybody took a 5 % paycut. we are that our stock is not public, so our value is not determinjed by greedy stockholders that want to see profit gain every quarter. as far as we are concerned, every year that ends in profit is a good year.

    Some facts

    - in the REAL world, no one should be left alone. you must be the best to stay on top.

    - heavy duty servers will not be replaced by MS. Windows servers simply cannot handle the load, let alone be secured decently

    - MS servers are ideal for file print servers and simple user management and file/ print servers. that is why you see a lot of mixed environments unix-NT

    - the customer does not give a fk about kernel architecture. he just wants easy to manage GUI.

    - geeks are the minority.

    have you also gone back to living in a cave and walking on all fours? wait: there's this new thing they call fire. but didn' life used to be great before we had all this 'wheel' nonsense? what i am trying to say is: why not improve user friendliness? going to all graphical would be so much easier. there is nothing wrong with being able to config everything, but it would also be easy to not having to do that.

    Hi there, only a few % of the computer using population are linux geeks who just like to use complex systems for showing of, and for looking down a users. i am an experienced programmer, but is still want to be able to instal an os by insterting the cd and clicking a few times. i don't want a 20 yr old text interface with lots and lots of options that are of no direct relevance. i don't want to use command line strings to configure every card in my pc, i want my os to automatically detect everything that is in the case. wtf should we need the command line anymore? also if you put the basic gaphics thing in the kernel, everything would look the same, and you would not have this Xwindows Gnome KDE crap. if linux would have a user friendly install interface and proper GUI i would use it.

    aye, 't is true. instead of viewing NASA as space pioneer demi- gods, i think more of them as managers lately. no more ground breaking projects, but a lot of meeting. they should be planning to go to mars. we should spread the human race to avoid extinction in the long run. to explore strange new worlds, to boldly go .... ok that was a bit over the top, but do you remember when they lost a sattelite because 1 department use psi for its calculations, and the other Nm^2? we'll never build an enterprise like that.

    Hi all, one of the reaons that seti@home and the united devices cancer project are so succesfull is that: - people choose a project to which they whish to contribute and - there is a limited number of distibuted projects going on. i'm pretty sure that if anyone can start large distibuted computing tasks, the so called OSIS will be swamped with tasks that no-one except their creator would find anything other that a waste of bandwidth/CPU, like calculating the value of pi to 2^128 decimals, or finding a cure for anthrax(there is one, but if you really think that dying from anthrax is more likely than dying from cancer.... knee-jerk anyone?) anyway i'm pretty sure that: - the whole thing will congest after a month or so. - my computer would be filled with warez since none of us would buy hardware that enforces the DCMA and what if i am working on a very resource intensive task? i don't want a guy from helsinki having access to my resources if i need them too. it is still my computer. but he desperatly needs mine because on my harddisk is his much needed data, and the backup on somebody elses computer is lost because of format, and the third copy is not available...

    isn't that the american way:
    -you must not put a cat in the microwave
    -if you vandalize the vending machine it might tip over and kill you.
    -playing on the nintendo 8hrs a day 6 dats a week might not be wise if you have seizures.

    i don't think its reasonable that the manufacturer is responsible for all the really stupid things the customer can do with its product. there is a thing such as common sense. people should not sue 'because it did not say on the package that i should be careful when using a chainsaw'.

    btw in all EULAs there is a phrase that says :"this product is provided as is...." and "the manufacturer cannot be hold responsible for anay damages...."
    which is also common sense. if a sofware creates software that contains 40 million lines of code it cannot be bugfree. no matter is your name is msft, redhat, oracle or apple.
    demanding that it should be is unrealistic.

    though i agree that better design would solve a lot of problems.

    btw.
    there is no spoon.......
    when you realize that, you will see that it is not the software that contains bugs, but that your mind interprets undocumented features that way

    I work for a small engineering company and it is true, but only if the programmer that gets to be manager has actual people skills.

    both the general manager, and my manager are engineers with people skills, and they understand that sometimes things get screwed up without the programmer being responsible.

    and they understand that a project that did not go well is its own hell, and that a well completed project is its own heaven (see the tao of programming http://www.terrible.cx/tao).

    however if your manager has no people skills, they can make your life hell. whether or not he used to be a programmer does not matter then.
