C'mon! Collect energy on the moon and send it back to earth... microwave... Why not just run a wire while being there? I don't want to flame, but this is totally ridiculous. There is SO much more others areas where we should be looking for "clean energy" sources. I 100% agree with you. This is my main problem for something like a year now. I work in a "consultant" places where we code for a client (to help its own team of coders). I hate it! we are 6 in a small room, to much noise, to much glare on my screen and theworst part of it, I am not allowed to think! Yeah, like where I work now... We are 6 programmers in a 12 by 10 foot room. With the entrance door of the office right in front of me and a big window facing south in my back. Try to be productive in those condition! I do my best, by I know I will never achieve my real true 110% there, it's just to disturbing. Kind of trying to study in the living room with a Canadian-Boston game going on, no much concentration!
I hate you. But I do because you made me realize that you are not really open-minded. Just stating that people sucks is not very elaborated. You should have said who and why. And even if you had said so, your are still closed-mind cause you would be showing how much you are not wiliing to understand others. I am myself saying that one or another sucks, but then, it always make me feel bad. I try to understand the person(s) in question and to place myself in the persons place. And then, it is easier to understand why the person is acting the way it does. First of all, every one has different point of view, different opinions. Second, everyone has different level of education. And saying that one suck because they have inferior education then myself is a big No No cause someone else may have a better education then me, and I don't think that I suck. But the person with better education then me might think so. In the end, it really doesn't count anyway cause we'll all die. What's really important is if the person is a good person or not. If it is a person wich will help another one or not. And if I ever judge that one is not a good person, I try to find out what may have drived them to what they are, and try to see if they strive to be better. For them to achieve a level of perfection which may seem easy to me, doesn't meen it is easy to them. So in the end anyones achievement are all equal for the same amount of "work" (in the psychological/spiritual sense of the word. And spiritual doesn't necessarely meen to beleive in god or buda or etc etc). So after having said all that, I would rectify my words and say that you don't necessarely suck, and I shouldn't hate you for the words you have said. You probably had your reasons for saying so and I am no judge to say if those reasons were valid or not for your judgment of others. And after all, you are a human beeing, able to think and evolve and I just wish that one day you will be able to introspec yourself and be a better person. I you dont, well... you suck
In the end, we all suck. It's just that we suck differently, some do it while they stand, some other lay down to do it etc etc...
Would it not be as complicated to implement? If I don't care about MY publishing right, but my neighbours do care about his, how do you implement that? Sure a scheme can be designed, but it will be broken. While being illegal to break such a scheme, it would be done, and big companys, seeing that their "protection" scheme are broked, would request new laws to try to "protect" their publishing right/copyright. The problem is that it has not been that easy until recently to illegaly distribute copyrighted material to the mass. Sure I copied music to my friends, and back, but never could I have done so with millions of people. Now, it is all to easy, and that's what scares big corporation. By selling just one, a single copy of your software/music cd/dvd, it is theoricaly possible that everyone with a computer acquire their copy. And the problems lies right there for them. How do you manage to make people pay for your "product" when they are able to get it for free. And don't tell me you would pay.25$ a song if you could. You woudn't! Neither would I, well no more then I buy CD's today. So those big companies desperatly try to protect their publishing right, which are their bread and butter. While I understand their motivations, I do not agree with the way they want to do it. Restricting publics right isn't going to solve anything because the same public will come with a way of defeating your "protection scheme". Illegal, yes, but it's also currently illegal to distribute music on gnutella. When the mass decide to do something, as illegal as it may be, you can't do nothing about it. Now comes another point. What does define legal and illegal? Morality. But what does define morality? It isn't moral/legal to kill because it is not accepted generally by people. It is not moral/legal to steal because people don't accept it. But now, also look at what IS legal and morally accepted. It is not legal/moral to be married with two wife at the time(at leats in many country). But in some other countries, it is very legal. The same goes for any legal thing. What determines legallity/illegalitty of something is a question of morality, and morality is defined by peoples way of seeing thing as right or wrong. So, we are now at the days where "copying, distribute to the mass, without paying" is MORALLY ACEPTED. Say that it isn't and you just lie to yourself. We do not accept the musician to not get paid for their work, but we don't want to pay for this result of their work. We don't want to pay for it because we are able to freely copy/distribute/acquire the fruit of this work. So mentally, we do not give value to the work in question. So, publishing company, to success in the future, should focus their attention on what is morally accepted, what are people willing to pay for and why? Music as we know it could be used for other purpose then raw selling. They could be the door on Publicity contrac, people like to buy stuff that their favorite signer wear/drink/eat/sniff. Change the business model so it go that way. Use music to create a new "must have", then, people would be willing to pay for anything related to their artist. Just look at how much Back-street-boys puppet had been sold when they were the hit of the day. Business should just remember that they make their living by given customer what they want. If customer aren't happy with that, they will not buy it. If they like it but do not want to buy it, they will find a way of getting it. No matter how much cry they do, or how much law they pass, in the long run, it's everybodys decision to make it work or not. And those who are not accepting it, small people or big corp. will have to live with it. That's the real meaning of "free speech" for the mass, and this is the silent revolution that is occuring with "electronic communication". Face it or not, it isn't a question of how it's called, publishing right or copyright. It's a question of wheter you face the new era we now lives in or not. Face the music!
Completly changed my mind when I was young. I was kind of closed mind, and at 15 I read a book about Einstein theory of relativity (not much math, but well explained). Since then, it really changed the way I look at life. You know, at this age my vision was that we born, we live, we die. Well, it's still what happens, but I am not so sure now about the before or the after or the HOW and WHY? To learn that TIME was NOT a CONSTANT was the hardest thing for me to learn. The point I want to make is that sometimes, scientist are so closed mind that they fail to discover new things because it's not 'normal', it's not in the book! Well, today I know that nothing is really 'true'. It's all a question of understandment and of vision. We don't know a thing, nothing!!! We are looking for other forms of life, but we are still looking for other forms of life like us, not bad in itself, but we just have less chances of finding 'other' life form in the general term. Scientist need to have the same feeling as I had (I think), so they can sit and say themself: "All what I know isn't a fraction of what it is. I'm looking at the whole house by the lock and I understand only part of what I see. I'd rather be openmind cause everything else in the house also influence what I see thru the lock!"
Would it be so bad? What would be wrong with 'living in the tree' while at the same time be technologicaly advanced? I would rather live in the wood then live with concrete all around, but it's only my opinion. My wife prefer much more to live in the city then in rural zone, but it is only a question of available "commercial" divertissments...
My understanding was that they do breath mostly at night, in order to 'use' the produced glucose as fuel, the same way we breath to burn our own glucose. Vegetable are just very efficient at 'creating' their own fuel out of water/sun. Am I right?
Funny you talk about it. i am particulary interested in 'alternative energy'. (Not pseudo-Magnet Motors...). And yesterday I was thinking about Photosynthesis which occurs in plants and some bacteria. My idea has always been that natures way of doing things is way better then our way and that we should learn from it. Well, I am not a chemist, but nature is amazing. IIRC Photosynthesis in plants occur when a photon excites a chlorophylls molecule, which then release an electron and trigger a chain reaction to metabolize h2o and co2 to glucose, which in turn is highly energetic. This glucose can then be used as fuel when 'mixed' with oxygen. So I searched a bit on the web and find this: http://www.nature.com/nsu/991007/991007-3.html
this guy, Darius Kuciauskas, and is team are on an interesting path. They are working on new way of using solar energy by imitating photosynthesis. While I found it clever, I think it might also be a good thing if people were looking a bit more to use the same reaction as found in plants. I don't know what would be the drawback of doing so, but if about all organism run on oxygen/glucose as an energy source, why aren't we looking to use it to? We could mimic natures by creating fuel out of Water/CO2 and release this back as Water CO2 when burning the fuel, thus exactly copying natures way of using solar energy. Anyone whith better knowledge to enlighten me?
I can understand, and I beleive very hard that animals are very good companions for human being. I can remenber when my grand-father died that my grand-mother went very depress and sick. We bough her a cute little kitty and she felt in love with it. It was like a friend to her, whe was talking to it and talking much care of it. In return, the cat was very king to her. I'm sure animals have emotions and they can feel how you feel, just as humans can. I've had dogs all my life when I was living outside the city, and they are part of my memories, now, I have 2 cats and I could not live without them. It's just so much gratifiant to take care of them and to feel that they appreciate it. But a robot?!? C'mon! As far as I like new technology, and as far as I can pass hours on my computer hacking god knows what, I whoud never "fell in love" with a Robot Kitty! I mean, I would fin it funny and probably disasemble it within hours to see it's guts and try to hack it a bit. But I will never feel attachement to a machine the same way as I am with a living, human OR animal. I's just not the same. Life is THE thing that fascinates me and make me feel like I do about my cats, snakes, friens and wife. I like those because they are all livings. Life is an incredible thing which we cannot understand more then 0.0001% yet. It's just... you know. So, I will never have the same feelings for a Sony CuteBotGoSearchTheBall. It could never be the same. Not now, and not for the rest of my life. It's not a question of behavior, it's a question of amazement at life. Sorry Sony, give me a PS2 instead;-)
Well, I understand that, but is it not good in a sense that the language/platform evolves? It's certainly hard to catch up, I work with Java/J2EE every days and I find myself to constantly learn new "features" or API. But my guess is that once it is complete, once it does what people wants, it won't change that much anymore. Well, it's just a guess. But my question is, would it not change as much if it was GPL'ed? And if not, would it not hurt Java? Change which are made are necessary. And I don't talk about the logging api, i use Log4J. But the non-blocking IO is an extremely good addition to Java, and it was about time! So, if it was under the GPL, would it evolve and grow as much? Don't misinterpret me, I am all for the GPL when it makes sense. But first, I am for interoperability, not for a license. I don't mind at all if a product is closed source, even if I prefere open sources one, I just want to be able to work with it, to plug to it etc etc. I hate windows not because it is crappy etc etc, I hate it because nothing is open on it! It could be closed source and have public standards, that would be ok for me. Open DirectX and open your api, then it will be much easier for people to code one game/app for say both windows AND Linux. I know MS wont do that, but I think that's what Java is all about. Yes it's propriatary, but it doesn't limit me in my choices as do MS. Everything is not perfet with Sun, but nothing is. Just my 2 cents!
I had never understood what was so bad about Java not being GPL'ed... Ok it's "propriatary", but Sun has sit with Apache to settle on some points, anybody can submit request to the commity etc etc. Sure, I won't deny they want to make a few bucks out of the Java, particulary on the NAME, licensing etc etc. But all the specs are there, you can write your own compiler/VM, you can give away your code and already a lot of framework/api are free (think jakarta). So what's the problem? I am really all for openess of standards and interoperabillity. Java has open standard, and is free. If you don't like the way Sun license IS Compiler/VM, use/distribute another one! I don't want to flame, I just don't understand....
And on track I would loose you in the first turn, you crashing in the wall! I much prefer a heavily tuned civic: engine as well as suspension, direction, then a beast which could do 9sec but which cannot turn. maybe that's why I prefer F1 to NASCAR...

It could never be the same. Not now, and not for the rest of my life. It's not a question of behavior, it's a question of amazement at life. Sorry Sony, give me a PS2 instead ;-)
It's more like: "if people had no incentive to steal*, passwords would be uneccesary". *credit card number, the money in my bank account, etc etc.
Mix a mouse with the "silence machine"!
And on track I would loose you in the first turn, you crashing in the wall! I much prefer a heavily tuned civic: engine as well as suspension, direction, then a beast which could do 9sec but which cannot turn. maybe that's why I prefer F1 to NASCAR...
Reminds me of a girl who worked with us at my last job. She has a master in CS, but could not even grasp simple concept like the COM model (she was doing VB). Once, she came at my desk to ask a question, and she put her greasy fingers right in my screen. Grrrr! So I politely asked here to not stick her fingers on my screen cuz I had other things to do then clean my screen 3 times a day. She went all upset and told me: "you owes me respect, I have a master!". Next day she got fired...
I know it isn't what sun recomend in there coding standards, but when I know that a method will be king of ugly, I always name my variable:
strVariable
intVariable
longVariable
and just variableName in the case of an object.
Usually, if you properly design your application, variables and object declaration isn't far at the top of what you are actually working on.
I for sure don't want my KB beeing replace by a Voice recon soft in my office. We are something like 8 devellopers in a small room. When everybodys would be coding, it would be kind of difficult to concentrate.
On the other side, it could lead to some funny things. Hey Joe, want to ear a good one? SHUTDOWWNNNN NOOWWWWW!!!
