getting some info of google's current hardware in here seems a good idea. here goes.
here is a nice article.
The company estimates that a server running Google applications all day is the equivalent of 40 years of use in a regular context. Approximately 82 of these servers die every day, but not completely; Google employs maintenance people who walk around with carts of hard disks, for example, and replace them in malfunctioning servers or UPSes.
now for some pics... damn. can't find them with google:). i'll post them if i have them.
I parsonally am not happy with long term repositories such as Yucca Mountain - too many unknowns. My favoured version was the subduction zone disposal - return it to the earth's core, which is used to it. Does anybody know why this disappeared off the map?
As i remember it the only valid reason not to put all nuclear waste in the Marianas trench is that environmental activists (yes the same that are against burning fossile fuels or taking down forests to put up windmills and solar panels) thought it was a fatally bad idea to put some hypothetical undiscovered creatures at risk down there.
Well i for one am scared to death of a mutated deepsea slug taking over the world but not as scared as i am to get my feet wet due to global warming (me livin' in the Netherlands and all).
To be absolutely clear i am not for building poorly controlled nuclear bombs (like Tsjernobil and TMI) but hey, that's sixties tech.... something better is probably available. Why not give it a go?
The change would make it legal for someone who owns a legitimately obtained CD to make one copy for their own private use. Under the widely flouted current law, all copying, even that for personal listening, is banned.
Hmmm, i thought it was quite normal to have the right to make a copy for personal use. Oh well, maybe it's just that i'm not a US citizen..
look here and mind this quote:
(...) CD-Rs were not seen as a media intended for copying music.
I tried your suggestion and to be honest, compared to the way graphics will look in 2010 or so it looked like shit... i mean there was even _fog_ there...
maybe you have some tips to tweak it to a more acceptable level?
In the case of chips, they would be used in channels that could be as much as several hundred microns in diameter
I always thought that nanotechnology was things that were in de order of a nanometer in circumference.
and added to that: where is my superconducting chip anyway? reading the publications from Bell Labs in nature around 2001 and 2002 i thought they would come up with that stuff pretty soon. here is a funny story about that. Sorry about the pwd protection
personally i would love to have an SLA with a car dealer and never have to worry about what's under the hood (bonnet if you like).
like the ppl i work for don't care about who's the owner of their computer or what's inside of it, i don't care what's under the hood of the car i'm driving... as long as it takes me to my customers.
if it would be my car of course it would be a different story...i
and how is that funny? did you really _have_ to put the link there? i mean if you hadn't anyone sick enough would have been able to copy/paste it manually...
you could have given me time to reconsider..
ok i know i'm stupid, but i still hold you responsible because you could have known too:p
Lucky you... I for one am hardly able to read my own handwriting at half the speed i can read a decent font (read: not "comic sans" and the likes) from my screen or preferably from paper.
And don't give me jokes about paying better attention at elementary school!
Well i would not be so blunt. There might actually be something wrong with some students. As Dany says himself: the intent of the site is not to insult professors. So if a professor gets insulted there, who is wrong?
Technically he didn't even need a lawyer to shut that particular (or any other) student up in this case because (as I understood it) the insult was instantly removed when there were complaints about it
It might not make a lot of difference to the farming of potatoes (which is a very honerable profession). And wether we understand the universe or not will probably not make a big difference to the Universe in itself...
So what else is new? If you happen to be an astronomer these findings will very likely influence your future work. I'm not an astronomer but it already influenced my understanding of the universe (a little). So on that scale it might make a difference... in the not so very long run.
So you're right, it doesn't make a difference. I don't make a difference. You don't make a difference. Potatoes don't make a difference... in the long run. Lets just lay down and wait until sweet death puts us out of our misery...
But wait! we could also have some fun while we wait for that! let's read some stuff on/. and whine about some utterly unimportant phylosophy.
So you prefer the retro car, eh? 2 tons of rigid steel, no safetyglass or any of that fancy schmancy stuff. Good for you!
Here is a simulation of a good old fassion 10mph crash just for old times sake:
First it is good to realise that a 10mph crash into a very heavy stationary object would feel very much like a drop from a 3 story building. So imagine yourself falling from a 3 story building in a box of rigid steel with some normal glass windows in it, face first... your life flashing before your eyes. The actual fall would take about 1.5 seconds, maybe just like that horrible little timewindow before a crash when you know there is nothing more you can do about it. Then there is the impact. The position you are in gives you almost no chanse at all to escape without breaking a few bones (wrists, arms, some ribs maybe?) before the shattered glass from the back window hits you in the nek. I think not even a dwarf ducked taped to the weel of a modern car with airbag in the same simulation would have more fun.
It's a shame this kind of experience is illegal nowadays. They just took the thrill out of driving a car.
without being a lawyer:
I think it is impossible to pin someone for manslauther if he has only written and spread the virus, but not actually ran it himself when it caused the damage.
Reckless endangerment at best I would say.
anyway, back to the point.
In my opinion punishment in itself should never be considered a solution to crime.
The fact that you could be jailed for it might even highten the stakes, and with that the kick, for some people. When I was a kid I would love to sneak in the garden of neighbours that would get really pissed if they found out... in fact i always snuk into/their/ garden.
It would be far more effective to make these kids understand that programming a virus is just not cool in the first place. If this approach works against smoking why not against hacking etc?
do you know the most annoying sound in the world?
<cap>eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee</cap> ;

yeah, but they have to compete with that hilarious paperclip though...
lets start with the word milk. and sponge, i like sponges.
sourcesince when is starting a metadiscussion "offtopic"?
i must be new here, i know.
hi,
can someone please post San's authorisation again?
i forgot his credentials and i am too lazy to figure it out myself.

i for one wouldn't want to be in the same team as this guy....
even dances for crying out loud!
"lalalalala and children, if you do not join a cool triad but stick with me you will all get a lollypop! now isn't that just Fan-tiddilly-tastic!"
yuch! pfew!

I would *rather* get nothing if you don't mind.

you don't need to _land_ there to measure the composition of the atmosphere. pfff, that is so yesterday.
