"But almost nothing else should be written in C/C++"

What world are you living in? Blaming poor technique on the tool used is moronic. There are ample examples of poorly written, poorly secured Java code the invalidate all of the premises in this rant. I've seen hard coded passwords baked into java source that were visible through a 'strings' call. Someone forgets to obfuscate his or her classes, and the entire structure of the program is available through a reverse compiler. Sure, the JVM protects one from buffer overruns and the like but don't for one minute think that programming in Java prevents stupid errors from exposing you to vulnerabilities.

Not to mention there are areas where java is not the silver-bullet you describe. If you need precise control over your memory allocation, java is not the tool to use. If your application requires precise timing, java is not the tool to use. Need to control over the placement of allocated memory? Writing your own transport layer? Need hooks into the kernel?

The prime directive still holds true - use the correct tool for the job at hand. Follow the lemmings of "this tool is the only one you need" at your peril.

People that talk on their phones in resturants, theatres, during plays, etc are the bane of modern existence. These people are the most inconsiderate, rude, and self-centered people around. Do you really, truly believe that companies go public to benefit their employees? I'm sorry, but employees are not factored into a bid to go public (unless you include the very few "founder" level employees that actually have decision making powers). If nothing else, going public is a major demotivator - drones sit around all day watching the yahoo market tracker counting their imaginary money. If the company lasts long enough as a public entity, you end up with a slew of fully vested assholes with major attitudes and a propensity for slacking off.

Companies go public for one reason and one reason only - to raise a boat load of capital. For those companies to actually produce something, this sometimes is the only way to ramp up production. For some industries this is the only real way to actually open up your markets and become profitable because the opportunity costs of starting the business are just too high.

For software companies, going public makes a select few very rich, allows the companies to ramp up both R&D and marketing/sales, and brings in capital used for M&O work. How much bigger does Google need to be to be considered a success? I see no reason for them to go public at this point other than to line the pockets of investment bankers, VCs, and board members.

    Color Guide: D = 10 E = 9.5 etc.

For example, in the case of my ex, here expectations of my love for her were: 2.5 x IF x D x Round x Platinum == $25k

My calculations came out much less; obviously a conflict of opinion ensued.

If your wife's diamond is less than that of your friend's, you're in deep trouble as this quantiatively proves you love your wife less than your friend loves his.

And if you're wife buys into this love equivalence equation, you have much more pressing concerns to worry about.
