The company will begin notifying employees of the cuts tomorrow, AOL spokeswoman Bentley said.
Back in the.com days, a company I worked for sent out a press release half an hour before the unscheduled meeting where the news broke. By that time, rumors were already circulating. And this wasn't a newsworthy company or even drastic cuts. It's gotta suck when you've got a 20% chance of getting terminated and 24 hours to worry about it.
only if/when EA ponies up a big wad of cash to buy off MS's publishing rights. Any development so far would have been done with XBox as a target, so they may still be released on XBox first.
Just a guess: If you currently do a search at the University of Indiana, the results are Powered by Google Search Appliance. Sounds like they'll switch to ChaCha for intranet searching.
Actually, there is a statutory Fair Use for trademarks.
A nonowner may also use a trademark nominatively--to refer to the actual trademarked product or its source. In addition to protecting product criticism and analysis, United States law actually encourages nominative usage by competitors in the form of comparative advertising.
Of course, Google has been sued numerous times over ad keywords and content, so it's not unexpected.
Speaking only for myself, I bought a laptop that came with Windows 2K installed on it (I don't recall if I had the option of Windows ME). I had a work computer updated from windows 95 (ugh) to Windows 2K (although it was probably a disk re-image more than an upgrade).
remember odp? dmoz? They were an free and open directory started back in the day when yahoo wanted money for listings. However, category editors have egos, some had no ethics, and it turned into a game. Some editors charged money for a link to be added. Some blocked competing web sites from being listed. And many ignored the backlog of submitted links. Meanwhile, google came along, yahoo stopped charging, and dmoz lost influence.
Today, I received a vandalism warning from wikipedia for a defamatory comments. It was the first one I've ever received, and evidently it will be the last one since the next time my ip will be banned. Now, I like to first post goatse links on slashdot as much as anyone, and if it was defamatory, I'd be the first to acknowledge it, but my edit was factual, documented, on-topic, and not controversial. If people are banned for trying to improve wikipedia, then something is wrong.
And if that's happening, then it's no surprise they're dying. Why should I bother correcting or improving an article if an ego-driven editor gets his kick by blocking ip ranges?
WebKit/kjs/khtml is open source (LGPL, BSD-like) and used by Apple and Nokia and will be included with Qt 4.4. Yeah, Google sends a lot of cash to the MoFo (and I think they may have contributed code as well), but they're also Apple friendly and using WebKit would probably be less work.
Other "Foneros" can access the public channel for free, while non-Foneros can pay a few dollars a day to use the access points.
"If they are prepared to securely share a little of their broadband, they can share the broadband at hundreds of thousands of FON and BT Openzone hotspots today, without paying a penny."
After the MN jury verdict was announced, I realized that the file sharing crowd has a lot in common with the tax protester crowd. For those that aren't aware, tax protesters have a variety of reasons why the US Income tax doesn't need to be paid: the amendment wasn't correctly ratified, wages can't be taxed, the IRS doesn't have authority, etc, etc. And They still cling to these arguments even when no court has ever ruled in their favor (it's a conspiracy, after all).
A friend of mine used to subscribe to a newsletter (bottom line or something like that). Half tha advice was dubious strategies to avoid paying income tax. The other half was advice for what to do when you're audited.
Likewise with the RIAA lawsuits. Slashdot is full of excuses and rationale why it's not a crime, how to avoid getting caught, and defense strategies in case you are hauled into court. There have been positive rulings against the RIAA, but with that $220,000 fine in Minnesota, I wonder if anyone on slashdot will consider maybe the RIAA is right. Nevermind, it's probably just a conspiracy.
Actually, China is outsourcing advanced weapon design to the US. They loan the US govt money, the Gov't spends it on stealth aircraft, Chinese spies copy the blueprints.
Why are they using x86? ARM or SHx are both much more power efficient, work with linux (and get more done per clock cycle). Did AMD give them a good deal on low end chips they couldn't get rid of?
(I'm replying to this because I can't find how to reply to the main article under Slashdot's new interface. Where da buttons?!?)
Look at the floating panel on the side ("xx Comments"). At the bottom right side is the reply link. Also, the "more" link loads up new comments without doing a page refresh.
I believe sony already dumped their 60 gig inventory, so any price drop would be from the retailer, not sony.
Also, it only has 2 USB ports and doesn't support SACD (which wasn't much of a seller anyhow).
cool... but not as cool as zfs snapshots.

That wasn't about patents, it was about alleged copyright infringement and IBM's alleged breach of contract.

Where do you get that from? The first Compiz release was january 2006. Aero was included in the July 2005 Vista Beta 1.

I have the power:
# ifconfig eth0:0 1.0.22.53 netmask 255.255.255.0
The article mentioned (or assumed) that the linux was updatable, so it's probably more like flash RAM than ROM.

Wondering if this is flamebait or troll...

You can buy two for $400 starting november 12th. One for you, one is donated to a 3rd world kid.
Ok, what's the real story behind the Slashdot PT Cruiser?

What if someone used your asshole or mouth, leaving you in full possession of it? Do you encourage that or not?
Do you encourage rape?
