Slashdot has posted anti RIAA articles. I guess it's kind of like considering yourself a linux kernel developer because you watch the gcc output scroll by when you emerge gentoo.
That's wrong. When you click (or left click) on a google adword link, the url appears in firefox's status bar temporarily. If you hover over an adword in gmail, you can see the url. (Evidently they forgot to hide it in gmail). Google is intentionally hiding the link with an onmouseover event.
The US Congress, with encouragement from the US sugar industry, instituted a quota on foreign sugar imports. The result is that sugar is twice as expensive in the US as in Canada or Mexico. Life Savers closed down an Illinois plant about 4 years ago and moved the facility to Canada for this very reason. I think Brach's now produces most of their candy in Mexico.
Having a monopoly isn't illegal. Abusing monopoly status is, but it's a long process to actually do anything about it. From 1969--1983, IBM was under suit for abusing their monoply status.
I ran into Zonk at the E3 earlier this year. He admitted to down modding posts critical to him. If so, it would make him the only editor to read slashdot.
I agree. Complain all you want about MS, I have a legal copy of Office (2000) on my computer and they can't take it away. I can save the files on my hard drive (in a variety of formats), and I can open files I created years ago. What if google cancelled Google Office? You're fucked. Or if they get busted on patent infringement. Or if they wreck the program with dubious features? (MS isn't the only one that does that). Yes, let's give the company complete control over our office documents. They promised not to be evil.
The IRS isn't concerned with state sales/use tax. They're concerned with people that resell items for a profit. Especially when they're doing it on a large scale and bringing in a significant income from it.
The fact that you pay up to 50% income/state/fica tax has no effect on the "simple transaction." You'd be paying that amount whether you buy a laptop or not.
The cost of goods sold is a deductible expense.
If you're a legitimate business, you don't pay sales tax when you bought the laptop. If you're not a legitimate business, then sales tax/use tax is exempt (my state's use tax includes exemptions for casual sales (items purchased from someone other than a business or dealer).
So that leaves just the sales/use tax (only paid once) and income tax from any profit.
Microsoft's financials are easy to find. 6.8 billion in cash, 22 billion in short term investments, and 9 billion in long term investments. Google, for comparison, has 3.5 billion in cash, 8 billion in short term investments, and 1 billion in long term investments. [numbers as of dec 31, 2006]
Keep in mind: Apple pre-announced the iPhone since they were filing FCC documentation, which would have let the cat out of the bag (sort of). Now that everybody + dog knows about the iPhone (and has seen the buzz and excitement over it), you can bet other companies are working on something similar. If they don't release it on time and bug-free, it will be a punchline, much like Newton.
All code (and other documents, research, etc) written/created by government employees is, by law, public domain. There are a few exceptions (for privacy and national security), and contractors are exempt.

Wrong. T-Mobile (Deutch Telekom) is based in Germany.

x86-64 exists because of AMD; intel tried to go with the itanium. I'm not sure if that's an argument for or against intel :/

especially since slashdot readers aren't exactly known for their cleanliness.

You've got a girlfriend?
Stranger than fiction, indeed!

Perhaps you should take a look at schedule C (profit or loss from a business) sometime.
line 1: Gross receipts or sales
line 4: Cost of goods sold
(hint: line 4 is subtracted from line 1)

Apple has been a "lifestyle" company for a while. If you consider turd burglarizing a lifestyle.

You might have to file a Freedom Of Information Act request to get it.

As of PHP 5, I use PDO (a standard PHP 5 feature). Prior to that, I used Pear::DB which is often available on shared hosting services.
