This is exactly right. And the "I didn't know I was doing anything wrong, Kazaa didn't warn me!" argument is idiotic. Kazaa should not be asked (or forced) to take ANY responsibility for the content available-- they do not host it.

At the same time, the RIAA needs to do more to inform people. Some people just are so clueless that they don't understand that they're breaking the law.

That is definitely his goal. I also found this one interesting:

McBride: The thing about going after end-users is it doesn't shut down the flow of Linux. If you look at the GPL, it couldn't be more clear, they either have to pull [the offending code] or shut down the distribution. The things we're laying claim to are things you can't pull out very easily....it's very difficult to yank this stuff out. We're not actually shutting down the flow of Linux, just cleaning it up at the end user level.

So basically he thinks that the code is so difficult to replace that users will be willing to pay $699 a seat rather than replace the code? Does he have a clue what Linux is? If we were willing to pay that kind of money, there would be no reason for Linux to exist, we'd all be using SCO Unix or Solaris.

New Line has done a great job of (a) making sure that people know the extended release is coming before the plain release comes out and (b) not duplicating any of the supplemental material on the two releases.

Personally, I think of each movie as being a 6-disc special edition. If they released it that way all at once, the total cost would end up about the same, so what difference does it make?

I hope Lucas is paying attention to the upcoming Alien Quadrilogy box set. All four movies, original cuts and extended cuts, each on a separate DVD, plus a bonus disc-- 9 DVD box set for a retail of $99.95. I'll be buying that and if Lucas does Star Wars like that they will sell tons and tons. Although they probably will anyway.

This is a really good point. The public airwaves are just that, public airwaves. Of course the networks do have the right to encrypt things however they want. We, in turn, have the right to not watch.

The industry doesn't see how stupid this is. Many shows get popular _because_ people tape them and trade tapes. Many other shows are on in terrible time slots, but thanks to VCRs, they get viewers.

I would guess that half of daytime TV viewers watch it by taping it and watching later.
