  1. Why hasn't anyone mentioned... on Dell No Longer Selling Systems w/o Microsoft OS · · Score: 2

FYI - this effects all of our competitors as well.

Can anyone confirm this? Making cries of "I'm not going to buy a Dell now" are silly unless you're willing to expand your list to (probably) Gateway, Compaq, HP, E-machines(are they a competitor?) if this is actually the case.

There's a feature on the Ghostbusters DVD that has a printed commentary to accompany the movie that's kinda like that Pop-Up Video show. It gives facts about locations and ideas for scenes and so forth that are actually really interesting. That might be one of the best features I've seen on a DVD to date (although I suppose it doesn't really harness the power of the medium...).

With the exception of that one shining example, I agree with you completely. Most special features are junk. I buy DVDs for the picture quality and longevity of the medium as opposed to VHS. I'm not a huge film buff, though, so what do I know.

Interesting about the workout videos. I would've never thought of that.

I don't need a National Geographic special or extra footage inserted into the movie. I liked what I saw in the theater well enough, and that's what I wanted to get. Plus it was free.

If you feel that these extra things are for you, then wait. It's not like if you change your mind the version that just came out will be out of print. If you absolutely *have* to watch Lord of the Rings right now but want to wait to buy the super-duper special version, JUST RENT IT.

    That's a good point.

I suppose DirectX does push new features of video cards, and that's something I can appreciate. It's all well and good to have the portability of OpenGL, but there has to be something that motivates hardware sales and keeps innovation going (I'm of the mind that the gaming community is a big part of the reason the hardware manufacturers are able to stay alive in the consumer market, but what do I know). In theory it would probably be best for *all* game makers to use OpenGL to help motivate the developers, but in practice I realize that must be impractical considering target market/budget/timeframe concerns. It just bothers me to see OpenGL get so frequently ignored in favor of DirectX.

However, I can only wonder how accepted DirectX would be if it were ported to Linux by Microsoft. For the record I've never played with WineX, but I heard it could run Warcraft III not too long after its release. That's pretty gosh durn impressive.

I'm already not crazy about having more than a couple soldering points on something I can hardly afford. Then my roommate at the time decided it would be hilarious to push my arm when I'd get close to a solder point. That was a fun day.

Now I have a V7 (new version) PS2 and I'm too chicken to mess with these new-fangled hardly-tested (or so I hear) modchips. *sigh* So much for imports.

Anyways, I really like the sound of that. Expanding it beyond the bookstore/coffee shop to radio station ID tags (i.e. listening to the radio if you can remember the time and station you can add it to a collection via the station's website and get radio station burnt CDs for a fee or something) is another possibility (whether it's feasible or not is another story).

I would say that your drawback regarding the extras of a CD (art, etc.) are actually incentives to purchase the actual product, not disadvantages to burning your own. That would justify a slightly higher price for the complete product. Hopefully by the time something like this could be implemented we'll have something that can alleviate those concerns about bandwidth.

That made me think of something: what happens when the ideals of the commercial pop-up goes against the ideals of the show? For example:

Parent is watching some fuzzy bunny cartoon with child. It is a nice, non-violent show. Up pops and ad for something the parent is against like, say, a toy with a gun or perhaps a Teletubbie (hey - maybe the parent thinks they promote drug use) or something. Child is no longer allowed to watch the show, but not because of the show itself. Because of the advertiser. And how will this affect the V-chip? The shows could be punished because of the ads. Seems a little off to me.

Give them a little bit of credit for that. Hopefully they'll just find a different less insane route. Just because they "haven't ruled it out" doesn't mean they'll use it. Besides, a big ad for Folger's or something popping up over Friends couldn't possibly make the show any worse.
