Truth is, the only people that have the moral high ground in this whole thread are the ones who aren't participating in these inane conversations of country/continental superiority. As far as I'm concerned we're all being idiotic assholes. So don't pretend you're any better than everyone else just because you presume to have a leg to stand on. You're still country bashing with the best of 'em.
That being said, anyone worth his salt knows that great inventions/discoveries have been made in European nations and in the United States. I, being American, don't believe that we're the fount of all wisdom and invention, but I think that we do some neat things sometimes. And some stupid things sometimes. So does wherever you live, I'm sure.
Now, if you don't mind, I think I'll skip the looking in the mirror suggestion in your post, because I'm not a particularily handsome person. Oh yeah, and, um, get bent.

Wouldn't it be sensible that if you purchase a used Xbox (i.e. from a funcoland/gameco/used game store) you don't even see the EULA, and therefore are not obligated to abide by it? I'd love to hear the legalese on that.
Another good case study is Jimmy Eat World. They've been doing great recently, but they spent years on Capitol Records (Capitol directly, not some subsidiary) with minimal success. After Capitol dropped them a little under two years ago, they released their new album by themselves and now get major radio play, movie soundtrack songs, MTV play and the oh-so coveted chance to play on Conan O'Brien (and other talk shows). And they get to play exactly what they want to. Good for them.
"The same thing happened in Black & White too -- a character went off for a poo in the middle of a conversation. It was clear they did not understand the social consequences of terminating a conversation in such an abrupt manner."
It's clear that he doesn't understand the social consequences of taking your poo right there during conversation.
3. The face makes it obvious that this is an anime post, for anime fans. We all KNOW it's Sasami from Tenchi Muyo. The US military doesn't read comics too often. It's not like Slashdot is being sneaky about it.
And since when does the "sneakiness" matter in a court case?
And since when did we all know it was Sasami from Tenchi Muyo? I don't even know what a Tenchi Muyo is....
(not terribly relevant, but what the hey - thanks to snpp.com)
Lisa: I can't believe that extra-thick layer of pollution that I've actually picketed against burned up the comet. Bart: But what's really amazing, is that this is _exactly_ what Dad said would happen. Lisa: Yeah, Dad was right. Homer: I know, kids. I'm scared too!
The part that annoys me is that the submitter of this story is also the guy who runs the site that it's on (or the network it's on - whatever). Redundancy and blatant site pimping.
*sigh* I thought weekend/. just finished, now we have to go through it again?
In the six day stint I worked at Best Buy as a young'n they told us that the ultimate goal of a retail corporation is to be associated with a picture/logo. They hope to one day have nothing but the big yellow tag in front of the stores without any letters. I suppose that is to corporations what being called Cher or Madonna is to entertainers...
Isn't that a bit misleading? I thought the FireGL drivers were developed by someone else and, as far as I can tell, they don't seem to mention that. It just makes them look like they're developing the drivers. Do the original FireGL drivers have the same license attached to them?
When did that happen? Are those ATI official drivers? I noticed that when you check for most other cards you get this message:
ATI does not currently develop or distribute LINUX or XFree86 drivers.
However, our Developer Relations team actively supports 3rd party LINUX/XFree86 developers by supplying technical information and software development kits.
Which is how I thought it was. I hadn't heard of them ever having drivers on their site (but I admit I haven't paid that much attention). I don't have an 8500 so I haven't bothered to download these (I have a lowly Radeon VE). Any more information?
"Step back a little and look at those who watch TV, their life revolves around it."
Good lord, how can you be so thick? I've heard less stereotyping from hate groups. If you want to clean that up and say something like, "People who watch TV mindlessly 10 hours a day, their life revolves around it," then I might accept it. Otherwise that's just absurd. My life doesn't revolve around the TV (in fact, I hadn't even thought about it yet today until I read this tripe) and it certainly isn't the source of all my conversations. If it is in your little world then you're probably hanging around with the wrong people. It seems like you and the above poster are just upset because you're left out of whatever inane conversations your co-workers are having about whatever ABC sitcom is hot. I'm amazed that both of you put this emphasis on being left out when obviously you don't want to fit in, or else you would watch TV. You don't do something that probably over 90% of the rest of the population does, so don't bitch about it and be surprised when it actually happens and you're left out.
"Don't forget that it influnces all your thinking."
*sigh* So I quote The Simpsons once in a while in everyday conversation. I'm sure reading doesn't influence your thinking at all. Or talking with people. Or don't you do those things either?
"Sure you need a diversion, but do you really want TV to be it?"
Yep. I will continue to mix TV in with reading, geeky electronics fiddling (putting a computer in a 60's Pioneer stereo today), and rock music (now there's a brain rotter) thankyouverymuch.
"Don't forget the ultimate solution to a lot of life's problems: avoidance."
Funny, that's exactly why I do watch TV. To avoid working, to avoid listening to the girlfriend, to avoid posting here (whoops).
As a side note, thanks for putting that disclaimer at the end of your post. I personally enjoy watching TV. People who are on the opposite end of the spectrum (read as: don't own a TV) seem to be so insanely proud of this achievement that anyone who does own one instantly becomes the stupidest person they've ever met. I appreciate you leaving it as a suggestion and not a measure of self-worth.
Yep. That's the IP I'm getting (I'm on an AT&T T1 at work). I'm getting ping time outs and 404 errors on the site. Strange seeing as this article was posted (in/. terms) a while ago. Hmmmm....
This is news. If you consider the fact that Futurama *is* cancelled (hasn't been renewed to be super accurate), but had 1 - 1.5 seasons worth of episodes to show before they're done. Fox has also stated their intentions of not renewing the show and this has been doubly confirmed by Groening and Cohen in interviews. Absolutely.
Moreover, it is definitely news that they could be joining Adult Swim, which is fast becoming a big part of my Sunday night viewing diet.
As always, The Simpsons has all the answers. To be extra dorky, I looked up the episode on snpp.com to confirm:
[Episode 3F01] Home Sweet Home- Diddily- Dum- Doodily
The child welfare people that come to take the Simpsons children away lists one of the offenses against Homer and Marge as 'toilet paper hung in improper overhand fashion.'
Hey, if it's enough to get your children taken away, that's good enough for me.
"First off The Dvd-r discs are far more compatable with DVD players than Dvd+r's are"
Wouldn't that give the industry *more* of a reason to promote dvd+r? To avoid piracy and sharing of movies? I'm going to hold off as long as my hardware geekdom will allow it. Let the dust settle a little. Besides, my DVD player is completely incompatible with all forms of home-writeable media.
Ok, so let's say you are able to garner enough support to go on a massive 'Let's screw Microsoft!' binge and purchase as much as 20,000 Xboxes.
$4,000,000 - $6,000,000 = -$2,000,000
Two problems I see. And, while I'm not trying to be an ass, it'll certainly seem like it.
1.) Microsoft isn't the only one that'll see these sales figures. Game companies will too. They'll see a rise in demand and want to produce more titles for it (some exclusive, no doubt) therefore making Xbox more enticing to gamers. The increased production as a result of your buying spree might actually be able to be sold and you may unintentionally help Microsoft's plight in the gaming market.
2.) $2,000,000 isn't a lot of money to Microsoft. They probably don't even care that it's gone. But $2,000,000 in donations to open source projects would be a great thing. I realize that's not something that everyone is interested in, but if even half the people donated half that money to something more worthwhile than maliciously screwing Microsoft, you'd be doing a lot more net good than apparent net harm to Microsoft.
I was just thinking this same thing. That whole justifying-buying-an-Xbox-even-though-it's-made-by -Microsoft thing is kinda silly. So what if it costs them $300 to make and they sell it for $200?
You purchase Xbox: $200 - $300 = -$100
You don't purchase Xbox: $0 - $300 = -$300
Plus that things as big as a fucking microwave. I don't have room for it beneath my TV.
Yipes! It reaches farther than we thought!
I tried searching for palladium on Google and found that Palladium may already be part of my mountain bike! I can feel my pedal strokes being recorded already.
(honestly not meaning to advertise a seller, but it's the only link I had handy)
From the description:
9 wires only
Full BIOS update possible
Works with all import games (US, JAP and PAL)
Original BIOS remains unmodified
Works with online games
Import games works with standard AV cable in full color
The only "ModChip" 100% safe for future upgrades
Allows to use home-made software on the Xbox
Parallel port built-in - upgrade BIOS anytime without soldering
Play Import games
Play Backup games
There's discussion on the Xbox mod forums about all of this. Some people seem to think this is a good solution. For $60, I'd give it a shot.

How did you think their search engine worked? Magic?
Man, I hope that's on purpose. The irony would be so astounding that Alanis Morisette's head would explode.
