And if you drive a manual, like me:
    One clutch.

Now, how do you modify something simple and ingrained like the above interface, which btw has stood since Ford put out the model T?

The ability to travel in one direction while independantly rotating in another (and it looks like this eight legged freak can do that to an extent) is called holonomic motion. Robotics people have been doing this for years with something called an omniwheel. Basically its a wheel that contains many other smaller wheels that roll perpendicular to the axis of the big wheel.
We can do holonomic motion with as little as three wheels (popularlized by the palm robots from carnegie melon). Of course, four wheeled models have been made.
And I really think that it is from the four omniwheel concept that will really revolutionize travel, not this eight legged, asking to break down, feat of engineering.

  10. Absolutely wrong on Man Vs Machine In Chess - Who Is Winning? · · Score: 1

(Admitting I didnt read the Chess Base pages)

Look at the game TicTacToe. There are some finite amount of moves (something like 9!). Therefore it takes very little space to store the entire game tree, consisting of every possible move, in a computer. This means that a computer will always win a game, because it knows the best path at any given move. (TicTacToe might be wierd in the fact it seems that two good players can always tie)

Then look at Checkers. Sure, its much more complex then TTT. However, we have already completely mapped Checkers as well. Again, this means that the computer will Always beat a human.

Chess is much more complex then both Checkers and TTT. But the fact remains that it is still a finite set of moves. When a computer reaches the ability to store all those moves (and it will), then the computer will again win any game at all of chess, whether it is against a Grand Master or not.

The same concept can be applied to any game at all with a finite number of moves. As soon as the computer can hold an entire game tree in memory, then it will always win. (yes, given time, even Go will be completely mapped)

  11. Context, not listening on Is Google's Future: Star Trek? · · Score: 1

The hard part of this problem is not listening. Computers can listen to a microphone, filter out the background noise, and correctly identify around 95% of what you are saying. Thats the easy part.

Now, with storage and speed, you can even do a grammer properly, associating each word with its possible connotations and positions in the sentance. Combine that with a context free grammer, and your all set.

I believe that its the context skills that the AI needs to work on. Human beings have this nack for associating the right context to sentances. (I dont know of any working ways to do this in software yet) This will be the hardest part to get the machine to recognize.

I am sorry, but 800,000 isnt a small number. Each household will only have a demand for a single gamecube, no matter what price you put on it. AFAIK, there is only one game for the GC that uses the internet: Phantasy Star Online. Given that, the lack of broadband adapters being a common accessory, and the fact that I can't expand on it and run Linux or similar, and the limited selection of games, all point to a certain saturation of the market that we appear to be reaching.

Xbox and PS2 can break the limit of 1 per household because they can run Linux (ie become a family or personal PC) and because they have networked games.

On the Cheap side, If milkshop 3d is still around, that is a very cheap 3d program used a lot in the game modding community.

Then You have Maya, but ive never used it, so cant compare.

Lightwave, has a great renderer, but i find that making models is easier in 3ds

of course, you also have all the support packages, like Bryce 3d, Poser, etc.

But honestly, from someone whose dabbled in 3d, go with the choice that major motion picture studious use. Blender, as soon as you master the interface, is easily the most powerful modeller around, and it makes great sense for High School budgets.

Squeak kind sucks for professional work (its kinda slow, being an emulated environment) but is great to teach stuff on. Heck, it even has a part that kids can "program" without writing a line of code (using a visual paradigm that I dont have the most experience with, sorry). (oh, btw, squeak runs on all platforms)

    2. Logo. Yup, still alive and kicking. Also runs on all platforms. If you want to teach multiagent systems, then you can look into *Logo (star logo).

    3. Boxer. A mac only thing that has a lot of educational properties.

    4. Toon Talk. Oriented on the younger crowd. Uses a lego like code building process to solve missions. Only for windows i think.
