And you have knowledge to evaluate the source code and spot problematic areas or would you have to rely on others and their motivations behind a review?

I've been using OSS software since way before linux surfaced, got old quarter inch tapes from EUUG in the 80's with software 4 times a year, but I don't think OSS is the holy grail which fixes everything, nor do I think MS is any better than OSS or worse for that matter. For 99.999% of all software users access to the source code is not adding any value to their computing experience nor do they or will they ever have the ability to do anything with that source code. OSS is good for many things, but using this as an argument against another OS which is currently under research seems farflung and downright ridiculous. Besides, the technical paper is quite good and they are definetly on to something, what the endresult will be, we can only speculate about, but I reserve any opinon for the finished product if or when it appears.

What? Did you actually expect things like this to be developed by American companies? Why? With todays religious climate here in USA, science and technology has been put on the backburner. Add to that the horrible education system, infrastructure that is laughable, and the ingrained horror and antipathy against anything that may taste of regulations, USA will fall further and further behind the rest of the 1st world. If you take some time to look through /. and other media that reports on new technology, you will see that a wast majority of new technology is not coming from USA Actually less and less innovation is done in USA and in a few decades (with todays trend continuing), virtually none will be done in USA

Remember that many European countries have mandatory military service for it's young men. This means that the amount of 20 year olds in higher education is lower for the countries that traditionally score the highest (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland etc). If they had looked at 22 year olds for instance, the percentage would be totally different since most military service is a year or less.

I was "shopped" into USA by my company. The team I work for, is a highly specialized technical team. Of 14 people, 1 - ONE- is a US citizen. Our regular technical people are in general US citizens, with a nice amount of foreign workers. The least skilled are the US citizens, the foreign workers generally are much more technical, with broader knowledge range and better analytical skills. That is one of the reasons why both our department and development mostly consist of non US citizens.

If you take a look at the educational system in USA, it's easy to see that a lot of foreign countries have catched up to and surpassed US schools, esp in lower education. When it comes to University educatiom, I got mine form the school ranked 68th in the world and way ahead on the majority of USA universities. And this education costed me $300 per semester and hence is affordable to anyone, no matter their financial status and without putting them into debt.

And lately, the Secretary of Education have showed his lack of education through his statement along the lines of "If we abort all black babies, we would eliminate crime in this country". Yes, USA gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling these days.
