HTA are local run apps that use vbscript or jscript and html. Since they are treated as locally run apps and not remote apps, they have complete access to the system (within limits of scripting) as any other binary would have. You can sign HTAs so they are trusted.
There are plenty of websites that offer services for unlocking phones. Not exactly cheap ~$20-$30, but you'll retain use of your phone (assuming you're switching from one gsm provider to another)
But in China, people ARE reselling other people's copyrighted works for profit. Yet it seems like the majority of Slashdotters approve of this as it "drives prices down due to competition".
I disagree. It could have ended many different ways as long as there was a point to it. Personally, I would have preferred the ending being that Neo wakes up from an "outer Matrix" into the real world, perhaps to find out he is a machine in a human constructed Matrix. Now wouldn't that have been interesting?
Portability is just a by product of being a standard. The real benefit of XML is structure and extensibility. config and ini files are more easily parsed if they were in XML. Current parsers may be slow, but that doesn't mean new parsers would not be more performant.
The problem with benchmarks is that you have one group that only likes to look at synthetic benchmarks (you appear to be in that group). The other group would rather look at "real world" benchmarks. In this case, comparing Word on a PC and a Mac. You can argue that the PC version is more optimized, but from a customer point of view, these are the only two versions they can get. Given that fact, they should base their purchase decision on available processors running with available software, not theoritical software. In other words, you may be right that an PowerPC optimized version of Word would blow the doors off the x86 version, but we'll never see it (you are of course assuming the compiler Microsoft is using for the Mac version doesn't optimize for PowerPC which I can't deny or confirm).
You're the one talking out of your ass. NT still has the same portable architecture it's always had, hence ia64 and amd64 versions coming. Not to mention the various flavors of embedded NT.
The codename Longhorn has nothing to do with Texas. Win2k3 was codenamed Whistler, the next release was supposed to be Blackcomb, these are two mountains in Canada. An intermediate release was decided upon and this was called Longhorn. Longhorn is a bar that sits between Whistler and Blackcomb.

Is Prescott 64-bit?

Assuming it's true that Prescott has 64-bit capabilities built in but not enabled, the reason to keep it secret is to not have a cheap Intel 64-bit capable processor cannibalize their expensive Itanium sales. If a dual or quad proc Prescott 64-bit system costs the same as a single proc Itanium system, which would you buy?
Related to this, I've read (sorry no references, search google) that Managed C++ code will run faster than comparable C# code due to the experience in C++ compiler optimizations. So if you want to write C++ and have the benefits of.Net, perhaps you should look into Managed C++.
It's not a simple recompile. There's also testing and distribution. I believe Carmack has stated that porting their games to Linux was never expected to make money.
It's always funny that a bunch of ignorant people mod up an ignorant post. As of XP, you are not required to use drive letters. Mountvol.exe lets you mount any disk volume to any valid NTFS path.
I suppose this means you don't believe in freewill? If there is no randomness, this means that everything that has happened and everything that will happened is simply the output of some complex mathematical formula we can never hope to understand, but still exists.
Sony has been in the electronics business longer than Nintendo has been in the video games business. All they need to do is remove unnecessary electronics from their Clie handhelds, give it a smaller screen, replace this with that, and viola.

So what happens if an exploit is found in the OS or an application on the CD? How long will it take to get a new CD shipped to you? (assuming they offer such a program)
So the DRM "hole" is to copy the analog stream after it's been decoded... uh, how is this a hole? The whole point of DRM is to protect the digital bits, not the analog.
16 hours idle is certainly not impressive. Personally, I'd rather they state the minimum battery life, that is how long the device will last using full cpu, full backlight.
What makes you think the Sony pda division even knows what the Sony cellphone division is doing? Do they even care since the products are aimed at different audiences?
So you're saying that if Hitler did some charity work on the side, he'd be ok, too?
Region encoding is used to protect the distributors. Typically you will have different distrbutors for the same movie in different regions.

It's rather funny that in the piracy topic, so many people are pro-piracy, but when it comes to the GPL, the same reasoning doesn't apply.

Sony isn't doing the anti-/. effect, Palminfocenter is smart enough given previous links from slashdot to protect itself.
