I'm not sure I understand the big problem with Mandrake using RPMs. I agree that, at times, dealing with dependencies is a pain in the ass but if you use Mandrake's package installer it handles the dependencies for you. You simply click the package that you want and it will tell you that it has to also install x package(s) as well to meet dependency requirements then it installs all required packages. Where's the problem? I understand that it would be nice to have an InstallShield type of installer and I'm a little surprised no one's done this yet. I'd do it myself but; 1) I'm not THAT good, and 2) I'm just now learning GUI programming (GTK). All that said, I just don't see the big hassle with rpms.
I wouldn't say that. He probably missed the machines...
I agree. I've got a couple of small pentiums at home that run a webserver, email, ftp, etc. They are never under any serious load and there aren't very many users, so the machines pretty well take care of themselves. That said, I still routinely ssh into them from work Just to make sure my babies are OK.
IIRC in Canada at least you can't lock your weapons and ammo in the same safe [or at least with the same lock]. As for the general idea, storing loaded weapons is a bad idea.
This is common of anti-gun rights people. Once you make owning a gun useless, it's that much easier an argument to say "If it's useless, then why even have it. Let's outlaw it." Personally, I carry a gun for a living. I've never had to shoot anyone, but there have been a handful of moments that would have resulted in my death had I not had it. It is a rare moment when I am unarmed.
I fully understand that there are many places where carrying a weapon is unnecessary. I grew up in one of these places. However, if you go into a major city unarmed, you have just volentarily made yourself a prospective victim. Most bad guys I've had the displeasure of meeting are NOT generally willing to risk their lives to steal something that they want. If they know it is likely they could get killed by their actions, they will usually pick another victim. You perhaps.

Is there some propaganda movement out there that I've missed? I regularly run across people who refuse to believe that the technology that became the Internet began as a US DOD project.
Up until the time I got broadband, I always bounced from 'free host' to 'free host'. Now, I simply host it myself. A broadband connection, an extra pc and a copy of RH 7.3.
Honestly, I don't require much bandwidth for the sites hosted on my server. However, I prefer the freedom (and yes, i'm a geek, it's fun too) of running my own server. If my bandwidth requirements were to get to be more than my little cable connection could handle, I would spend the money to get more bandwidth. I even host a handfull of sites for my co-workers (for a small fee).
The "anybody can be an MCSE" thing is a lie propagated on slashdot.
I don't think this can be blamed on slashdot. It was the NT4 MCSE that started that belief. It was easy and anyone could do it. I must say that the Win2000 MCSE is significantly more difficult. I heard somewhere that this was done by MS to put some value back into the MCSE Cert.
corporations exist for one reason: to make money. For good or for ill, there are no moral obligations placed on them.
I must agree. A business's only motivation is, and should be, to make a profit. If people wish to impose morality on a business, it should be done the same way, through profit. Simple answer: If a business is engaging in behaviour that people disagree with, boycott them. If the business loses more money through boycott than it makes from the offending behaviour, then it will stop engaging in the behaviour.
Unfortunately, this is probably another issue where people would rather bitch than take action.
I remember when ISS was the Space Station Freedom and was an American project.
I suppose I'm just one of 'those arrogant bastards' but I wish it had stayed that way. I mean what did the US have to gain by bringing in other nations into the project? Money? Apparently not.
RedHat 8.0 is the worst POS out of the box linux distro i have ever touched. DONT USE IT !
I must agree. I gave it a fair shot. I used it for about 2 weeks before I downloaded and installed Mandrake 9. I use Mandrake on my desktop (mostly 'net and office stuff) and my laptop (programming and REALLY digging into all the really neat underbelly of the system). My server still runs RH 7.3
I try to never miss one. Grab yer girl and go out and watch. In the past it's not failed to get me laid. Unfortunately, this year I'm going to be at work, so I'll get to watch, but without female companionship. Everyone feel sorry for me now.
I agree, I run RH on my server and Mandrake elsewhere (desktops, laptop). IMHO, this is one of the best reasons to stick with some of the larger, more established distros. Personally, I do not have the time to pick through code looking for things like this. btw, I do buy boxed distros to help financially support these companies.
Linux is a bunch of pieces put togethter to make a whole...so you can look at just what you want/need too.
This is actually one of the features that I really love about Linux. It's very modular.
damn, I guess I'm just a bastard...I do that and I DO drive a car.
I'm in Houston and Lee Brown IS a Democrat.

Hello Nitpick, PERL still is and always has been an abbreviation of "Practical Extraction and Reporting Language"
That's acronym NOT abbreviation.

It doesn't work in Lynx and also not in Mozilla although I have flash installed.
um, I can view it with Mozilla 1.2.1. I don't know about Linux yet as I'm currently on my only Win2kpro machine right now.
We already have piracy laws so do we really need DRM laws?
Funny, when you say the same thing about gun laws, everyone freaks.
Is there some propaganda movement out there that I've missed? I regularly run across people who refuse to believe that the technology that became the Internet began as a US DOD project.
There are laws that try to stop pirating?
Not from what I've seen. There are just laws that try to make things more difficult for law-abiding citizens.
mmm...sorta like gun laws.
Anyone paying for colo or hosting in this same ballpark? How happy/upset are you with your provider?"
Seems like the topic is both...if you bothered to notice.Up until the time I got broadband, I always bounced from 'free host' to 'free host'. Now, I simply host it myself. A broadband connection, an extra pc and a copy of RH 7.3.

Sorry, couldn't help it.

That's just further proof that CIA have got something on him.
huh?Watching and taking notes, even though you could stop him is neither.
or better yet, call it an investigation.
