The parent should not have been modded "troll." Seriously--if randomly putting people's names on government "watch lists" isn't illegal, what is? Whomever modded this should go back and read about probable cause.
Yes, I told them the name dropped out of GPS a few years back, and they still haven't updated their Web page. You'll notice, however, that the word "Navstar" is nowhere in the GPS fact sheet.
No, I don't. Why should communications in wartime be any different than communications in peacetime? Do you really think the government will roll over and abolish the Patriot Act, stop its unconstitutional wiretapping activities, etc., the moment we "win" the "Global War on Terror"? For that matter, do you really think the "war on terror" is any more winnable than the "war on drugs"?
I'm sure that post was insightful, but it was painful to look at.
Seriously, consider putting paragraph breaks in your posts. That way, people are more likely to read your thoughts, which (from what I *did* read) are fairly insightful in nature.
The summary is a bit misleading. Yes, the US is pushing for this new IP concept, but it's through WIPO, so it's not intended solely for the US.
The important part, though, is that international treaties are exempt from court jurisdiction. Which is why they're doing it as a treaty rather than as a law.
I wonder how often in the future we'll see the government doing an end run around the Constitution in this manner...
Actually, I'd be happy to do that at an hourly rate. Alternately, I can spend time trying to clean the system without wiping it, again at an hourly rate. Or they can go home and reinstall the software themselves once their system is clean again.
Guess which option the customer is usually going to go with...
Search Google, do research and your own thinking and you'll find that there is A LOT of "information about anti-gravity, UFO technology, free energy and how UFOs are regularly airbrushed out from high-resolution satellite images." on the Internet and even though these things may sound odd, they are all extremely well documentet.
Are you suggesting we should believe everything we read on the Internet? And are you saying it with a straight face, no less?
The world needs more of you, man.
What, you want submitters and editors to start actually reading TFAs now?
But all you people who support laws like these, and then complain when then turn out badly, shut the hell up!
In all fairness, there are probably about four people on Slashdot who hold that viewpoint.

You don't happen to work for NASA, by any chance ..?
Yeah, it's a joke, but it's only funny because it's so damn true. :)

You misspelled fsck.

Actually, no it isn't. I work on the base that controls the GPS satellites, and they dropped "NAVSTAR" from their name a few years ago.

I think Democrats might look at this, too, if they were the ones at the helm.
"What do all men with power want? More power."
*Should* I be expecting privacy? As a point of law? As a courtesy?
Yes.

Congratulations, you have discovered the magic phrase to automatic +5 Funny!
Wow I'm amazed that that phrase hasn't come back to haunt you.
Why? It's not like she's actually using Windows or anything.
When are we going to get past eccentric non repeatable brilliance and to the point of dull efficient execution?
You mean like the movie studios?
I've heard of hitting a fly with a hammer, but this is the first time I can recall hearing of hitting a nail with a flyswatter.
Seriously, if you need spreadsheets that big, you don't need spreadsheets--you need a database.
A true statement, as long as you also veer away from the "product reviews" ...
I never saw an ad. Adblock is my friend ...

Worst slashdot, ever.
You think it's bad now, wait until you see it again in a few hours.

Did you really have to go and break Godwin's Law like that? :)
