Call me a bit paranoid, if you will. But for all those "AC Trolls" my guess will be that if you are logged in, but checking the "Post as AC" box you will be known as AC to the world but Slashdot will know exactly who the AC was. If not logged in at all, I would think that they are logging hardware adresses and IPs.

  2. Re:diet? bollocks! on Hackers On Atkins · · Score: 1

The reason they work is not beacause there's some sort of cool hack involved, but because you're almost certainly eating less calories.

Well, to use your term to your post I say "bullocks". If you've read Atkins' book, you'd know that it is a qualitative, not a quantitative diet. That is to say, you can eat as much of the permitted foods on the diet you are allowed and none of NONE of the baned foods and you will lose weight. It's all a matter of regulating the blood's insulin levels *NOT* regulating calories.

In my own personal experience calorie regulated diets do NOT work, but carb-regulated diets like Atkins certainly do. Your body stores carbohydrates in your bloodstream and in your muscles. When you deplete your body's store of carbs by restricting yourself to 20gm of carb per day (ridiculously low!) during what is known as the "induction diet" (this phase is only meant to last about two weeks) you are depleting that store of carbohydrates so that your body will turn to the next logical source of energy which is fat. And since and Atkins dieter will typically be taking in more protein than most other diets one is less likely to suffer the deterioration of muscle tissue that is likely to occur under calorie restricted diets. You can literally eat yourself SILLY of the permitted foods and still lose weight on Atkins, which is why your claims that there is calorie restriction to blame for the weightloss is ludicrous! Without going into exhausitve detail, I can say that I may eat a plate of 20 or so chicken wings with bleue cheese dressing and top it off with a bowl full of whipped cream for desert (very low in carbs, but not in calories!) every noght and I will lose weight!

The only drawback to the diet that the good doctor acknowledges is that the diet as designed is typically lacking in many of the essential vitamins and minerals that you get from eating fruits and vegetables while not on the diet. For that he recommends using a dietary suppliment. But restricted calories? Dude, seriousely. Read the book.

The Bush administration has as much control over the domestic media as the Chinese do, they're just better at not letting censorship become an issue.

Your mind is as corrupted by a polarized world view as many of the Americans you decry. People, blinded by ideology (that is either popular or runs against the grain) calling themselves "free", you see it all the time. It is a cliche. Ironically, many of the patrons of this store in New York City - called Revolution Books - would likely agree with you because they are similarly mislead and ill informed. The store does not even have a website because they are luddite leftists; mistrustful of technology. But, they are affiliated with an organization that is online: The Revolutionary Worker. Both organizations owe their ability to disseminate the leftist view to liberties that are essential to American life.

Actually, let me restate something I've said earlier in this post. Most patrons of this store are quite informed and passionate about learning from alternative news sources. But what many of them fail to realize is that a Barnes and Noble sized store that serves as a clearing house for alternative information could NEVER repeat NEVER exist in a country like China.

I am not "Ra Ra" president B0sh or our government. What I think is precious, sacred and unique to the Earth are the foundations of our culture which holds freedom of the individual as a virtue. THAT is why stores like Revolution Books don't have armed gunman storming in, shooting the proprietors and patrons and shutting its doors.

We were drunk and not very skilled at this endeavor, but the end result turned out pretty nicely we thought. We kept at it while too and make them farily large and noticable. We did this in the dead of night, and whether or not the farmer in question caught the meaning of what we did, I'm fairly certain we gave him something to scratch his head over and ponder the next morning.

In related news, the 2.48 version of apache was also released. Was this a slashdot moment, as well? Did I miss a memo? I'm assuming I have. I recently read the O'Reilly book on this topic and two things seemed clear. 1) That the authors of the book really preferred the 1.3.x series of httpd to the 2.x series and that 2) BSD is the way to be for Apache (though Linux is an "okay" substitute.) Which really surprised me because threading in Linux is better than BSD.

So my questions are: If they are updating the 2.x series why are they *also* updating the 1.3.x series? Isn't the idea that 2.x will supplant/replace the earlier series? What do you get out of using the older version that you don't with the newer? Other than the ability to work with a tool that's more familiar to you becasue you've been using it for so long...Wouldn't the technological advantages of using the newer version outwiegh the inconvenience of yet another learning curve?
