    It's similar to the argument that gun rights advocates make - stricter gun control laws or programs will hurt legitimate owners, but the real problems will still lie with the criminals who don't abide by those laws anyway.

    In other words, if you ban spam, only spammers will spam.

    Actually, Douglas Adams' take makes more sense to me:

    But the FSF is not a "charitable" institution. It might not be covered.

    You know, of course, that not all not-for-profits are charitable institutions, and to apply the law as you claim would create one hell of a loophole to be abused by other people. Do you want to know the names of some other not-for-profits? RIAA, MPAA, BSA.

    You're missing the point.
    The whole point of having standards is as a starting ground to grow products on. You have your TV standards, and hundreds of companies can build TV sets that just work.
    That's what we need for browsers. A set of standards so that, whatever browser you use, any site will work.
    Admittedly, IE has most of the market and can blatantly refuse to submit to standards. That is wrong. So, even if they can do it in practice, they deserve to be despised for it.
    And before you say it, no, IE is not a standard. You cannot have a standard defined by --and changed at the whims of-- one of the players. Imagine if Sony could alter the TV standards at its own convenience...
