I frequent a forum and have grown close to friends there. I think it's turned into a great place for people to vent and share things found on and off the net. It's more like a social family more than anything.
I predict social forums will continue to evolve and become more mainstream. Look at myspace. Its popularity is based on the interesting content that people post as well as the networking available. There will always be a niche for smaller versions of myspace where people like to call home.
What would stop a politician from going to a heavily populated city such as New York or L.A. and promising a free gum ball machine on every corner. Of course they'll get elected because the large population would vote to have free gum balls. I mean, who wouldn't want free gum balls? The problem is that that sort of promises aren't good for the country as a whole. Can you imagine the number of cavities?
I tend to agree with you on the black hole thing. We should be very cautious and tred lightly with these little boogers. With regarde to Hawkings, I think he's correct. I've thought of this before but again, Hawkings beat me to the press.
Maybe now, considering the heightened tension, it wouldn't be the best idea to mix chems in your basement. If chemistry was your hobby and authorities did begin questioning you about your past time, it may help to back up your work with documentation and your membership to the local chem club. Definitely, don't start mixing chems that make bomb making substances. In the end, if worst comes to worse, you could argue your case in front of a jury comprised of citizens like yourself. As flawed as our court system may be, at least you can present your case to peers in hopes they will understand your passion.
Apparently, the Earth magnetic field has decreased by 10% in the last 10 years. I'm an electrical engineer and during my studies in sub-atomic physics, I learned that a particles velocity can be effected by magnetic fields. I keep hearing about the increased activity of our Sun (it's been getting hotter) and I believe it's possible that more of the Sun's radiation is penetrating the Earth's magnetic field due to it being weaker. If more radiation hits the Earth and the Sun is spewing out more heat, shouldn't that also increase the overall temperature of the Earth and can global warming be attributed to this? Besides, how can you explain the recent same climate changes on Jupitor and Mars. I've been bouncing this idea in my head for a while now and I can't see why this MAY not be true.
I had heard a long time ago that Comcast was also looking into using Tivo. Does anyone know anything about this?
I'm currently using Comcast's DVR. After being a long time user, not to mention hacker, of the Tivo, I can't stand my current Comcast DVR. Tivo is simply the best when it comes to menu interactivity and features. I miss my Tivo...
In all seriousness: I'm a network admin that could really use a munin type analysis program that's windows based. Does anyone have any suggestions? Munin seems like a great program but right now I need to get data on some of my windows servers.

Energy and mass are related (E=mc^2) and the Sun sends out particles in all directions. Particles from the Sun have been known to break the Sun's gravitational field during heightened solar activity. Have you ever seen the big tubes of plasma at MIT that is concentrated into focal points using magnetic fields? Particles that are excited have energy in both their oscillation as well as their velocity. Energy and heat are the same thing.

magnetic fields affect the velocity of electrons. There was a famous experiment where a guy heated silver in a furnace and then used a magnetic field to effect the direction of the electrons. It was this experiement when we discovered electrons have spin...

I bought mine, have been playing for almost 24 hours now and it hasn't crashed once. I've played about 7 or 8 games. I'm very impressed with the system and highly recommend it not only for the gaming but for the media features (i.e. streaming video, music, pics, etc.). Also, it's very easy to communicate with others over xbox live. Microsoft deserves credit for this product. You can tell they put a lot of work into it. I doubt you'll here that here but sometimes you have to call a spade a spade.

Note that where this is the strongest are the coldest places on the planet
It's also where the Earth's magnetic field is the strongest.
Solar wind contributes neglible amounts of heat
You may or may not be right about that. I'm suspicious when global warming is on the rise on Mars.

*looks around stupified*
Old is right. This is old news. We've known that neutrinos change between 3 states for decades.
This whole thing is so funny.

I pick mine up in two days. Christ, I'm so excited.
Maybe he does drugs and doesn't want the police to find out when he pisses into a cup.
