At CAN-CON, we have had Rob and his wife Carolyn as guests many times, and they are wonderful people. Take the time to listen to either of them if you ever get a chance at a Science Fiction convention.

And, of course, read his books!

  3. Ergo Keyboards...yuck! on How Effective are Ergonomic Keyboards? · · Score: 2

The problem I find with most "ergonomic" keyboards is that the angle they split the keyboard at is too wide for me...and the adjustable ones are too flimsy. I sometimes work 14 hours a day on my keyboard...and I quickly can feel the strain. What did help me muchly was dumping the mouse. I first of all tried the Logitec trackball that uses the thumb, and that was nearly as bad as the mouse...then I moved to the "Marble Mouse", the one where your hand sits on top of it and you use your index finger to move the trackball, and the buttons are on either side of where you rest your hand. Well, placed, it causes virtually no strain on my wrist. I tend to use Keytronic keyboards with their soft touch, but full travel keys. Nice.

Radio Stations get their numbers, at least in Canada, from a survey group that then publishes "The Book", which gives a reasonably accurate accounting of what numbers a station has in listenership.

They would have to do the same thing in an international forum to get similar type numbers...and I doubt that they are willing to spend the money to do so.

  13. Canadians want TIVO!!!! on Tivo 3.0 'Firebolt' Hits the Wild · · Score: 1, Offtopic

Canadians are always tech-hungry, and that is why we have in excess of 60% of our homes having internet access, and HALF of those have either Cable or ADSL access. So figure that most of those with high speed access have the money and interest in TV to buy a Tivo...remember, something like 90% of homes have either Cable or Satellite TV service...

So, you have 30+ Million people, 27 million have cable ot satellite TV, 18 million have Internet access, and half, or 9 million of them have high speed/broadband access, and probably also have Cable/Satellite TV. That is a potential market of 27 million at it's high end, and maybe 8-9 million on the low end. Figuring at worst case, only half of the people with "everything" (C/S TV, Internet+Broadband) are potential customers, that is still 4 million customers! Do the math for yourself...that is a lot of money to be ignoring!

This takes a great deal of engineering knowledge and planning. Only a fire caused by jetfuel in the quantities from a large airliner could burn hot enough to melt the superstructure of the building and cause it to collapse.

  17. Just another failure of imagination on Doubting the Existence of Black Holes · · Score: 2

I think this is just another case of building "spheres within spheres" to make a model that allows a non-fuctional theory work. You can't explain away black holes and other strangeness in Einstien's work. Like what has happened with quantum physics, many less imaginative scientists saught ways to explain or disprove the "weirdness" of quantum physics...similarly, they are *still* looking for ways to explain away the weirdness in Einstien's work. Quantum Physics works, and so do the Special and General theories of Relativity. Just because they give you some results you don't like doesn't mean that they are wrong.
