  2. Re:examples you could use... on Fun and Informative Way to Introduce Open Source? · · Score: 1

Yup, Stallman was in Montreal three weeks ago giving his talk on Copyright vs Communities and mentionned the recipe analogy. There are audio recordings available in speex but it's mostly in french, see Copyright 2005 recordings to download.

  3. wifidog + wrt54g on Build a Wireless ISP on Linux · · Score: 5, Interesting

You can install wifidog, nocat's successor if I may call it that on top of openwrt and voilà, instant gratification. You won't become an ISP, but your users will never know the difference ;) In case you're wondering, openwrt is a replacement firmware for the wrt54g series of routers. It's a small gnu/linux distribution that does its job quite well.

It's not like the postal code to MP that should be free, right ? The small database is available thru Statistics Canada for 700 $ if I recall correctly. Bah, I just feel like complaining I guess but it still sucks.

  8. If you're around Montréal... on Canada Introduces DMCA-Style Copyright Law · · Score: 1

In two weeks, either Sunday the 3rd or Monday the 4th of July, Montreal will receive the visit of Richard Stallman for a presentation, followed by a panel with Russell McOrmond and other experts on canadian legislation. See the Stallman in Montréal 2005 page for more info as it becomes available. Organized by FACIL, Koumbit and LabCMO. The presentation will be in french, but the panel will be bilingual.

OpenOffice.org XML format is also available, although you wouldn't expect to see that in a slashdot article, of course.

  20. Re:No, the artists get nothing. on Canadian ISP to Name Music Swappers · · Score: 1
The allocation of the collected funds among songwriters, performers, and the labels varies from year to year. For 2004, the Copyright Board determined that 66 per cent of the funds would be distributed to songwriters through their collectives (SOCAN, CMRRA, and SODRAC), 18.9 per cent would be distributed to performers through their collectives (NRCC and SOGEDAM), and 15.1 per cent would be distributed to the labels through the NRCC collective. It is important to note that the funds earmarked for songwriters are distributed worldwide, while the performer and label compensation are available only to Canadians.
