Or... For a lot less money you could just buy this for $225. The monitor is not included, but it takes a 15" Flat Panel Display... which you can buy on eBay for a couple hundred bucks.
Perhaps it could be called a "power-user" program (rather than "maintenance"), but would provide an all-access "ticket" to ftp.apple.com (or a Windows Update-like Web script).
Or, to make everything simpler, they could offer this as an addition to the Software Update Preference Pane.
While I'm not familiar with Sound Recorder, I have to recommend Felt Tip Sound Studio. It is an amazingly simple and powerful audio tool that I think would fit your needs nicely.
I waited for almost a year for Coda to at least post a notice as to when they were going to port Finale to OS X. They eventually said "Finale 2003." When I heard that the 2003 version was still not OS X compatible, I went and bought Sibelius.
As it turns out, Sibelius, which I avoided for almost a year, is a FAR better program.
It, like all pro apps, takes some getting used to, but it is a very powerful app.
The core issue is Apple hiding APIs to hinder customization of their OS. The fact that Audio Hijack can exist proves that low-level APIs that Apple doesn't want people seeing(at least not yet) are still accessible to adventurous hackers.
The APIs are not hidden. Take a look:/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/
The article the other day was primarily about how Aqua was being kept locked up... Not the OS on the whole.
Apple doesn't mind people seeing the Frameworks. They're available in the PrivateFrameworks folder. The issue, however, is that since they are private they are undocumented. Chances are that Apple just wants them to mature a bit before opening them up for everybody's use. This will prevent a bunch of developers from having their programs break when Apple modifies the framework. IMHO, some other parts of the system, like the entirety of Aqua and the private section of Quartz, will ALWAYS stay private.
Thrird point. Constant use of controls. I agree but, why the hell QT and iTunes looks completely different than other ones.
The Aqua Human Interface Guidelines state that the brushed metal look should be used on programs that are used primarily for "Digital Lifestyle" purposes. QT and iTunes fit that description [well, iTunes certainly does...]
Now, if this "company" hadn't bragged about their "accomplishments," do you think the Army would have noticed that their computers had been infiltrated?

If you try to boot from another partition, CD, or external drive, you're presented with a very plain password screen with no instructions. I then have the screen saver set to require my password to get back to the finder. it's not obviously quite as secure as encrypting an entire volume, but is fairly secure.
The open firmware password method is a very useful if you are limiting physical access to the computer... however, if the computer was stolen, you don't have that sort of control.
The thief could very easily remove the hard drive from the computer and place it into another one to circumvent Open Firmware Passwording. Thus, in addition to Open Firmware Passwording you must also have some sort of encryption to safeguard the files on the disk.
Good luck getting reliable domain hosting and e-mail forwarding for $8 a month.
Don't quote me on this, but Omnis tends to be a pretty cheap and reliable hosting company. Don't get their $1 a month plan though because they will burn you with an annual fee:-)
I guess I'll be eating my foot when their servers get slashdotted though...
Scroll down until you see the characters in the yellow box with the grid. Click "help?" and you will get a popup window outlining some help junk, disregard that.
Click "Listen To These Characters" and it will load a wav file that tells you the characters... Now go back, and copy the address of that link. It
'll look something like: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/wv_web/[blah blah blah]/secret.wav
Add a letter into the blahblahblah section, and load that file:-)
Ah, the irony of it.

With those options turned on you can do everything you want without needing a mouse.

This is more analogous to writing all the information in a big black marker on a white board in a locked room that has windows :-)
My 2 cents.
I thought it was cookies and ass... or maybe that was the daily show.
Drat! Here they were trying to divert the effects of having a link posted on slashdot... and you just HAD TO post the real link! :-)
Those little holes that you're talking about are for air intake.
Someone call Alanis Morissette, this is the real thing.

Stuff like that tends to look unprofessional.
Sorenson: 1
Us: 0
doesn't that mean Microsoft: 2?
IMHO: it makes no sense for these two companies to be battle this out [and waste (their|our) money] when there are bigger (fish|borgs) to fry.

you make some very good points.
Whoops. Time warp.
Nothing has changed other than the explanation. So, you're still agreeing to that clause whether or not it was intended for Toast.
all of a sudden i'm 2 cents poorer...
GEEZ, that's getting a little out of hand. pun (un)intended.
It's just a study, guys.
