Is it wiser to spend money on memory or megahertz?
RAM, RAM, RAM!!!. My home machine is a G3 300Mhz with a pile of ram. When I have had the opportunity to work on a G4 Dual-Ghz machines with a lot less ram, it felt sluggish. Go for the RAM, and you won't regret it.
Unless, of course, you get the RAM direct from Apple. No offense to them or anything, but they rip you off when it comes to RAM. Go to Crucial Technology and get yourself just as much ram for half as much money. Good Luck with the new machine!
here are no aftermarket options (that I know of) for replacing a processor on a current G4
While I've never used either of them:
PowerLogix is now offering G4 update cards and such.
Newer Technology has recently been reincarnated... or at least transferred to new ownership. This is really promising, so please don't slashdot their site and put them out of business again:-) (yes, they are the people that were always 200Mhz ahead of Apple and had outstanding benchmarks as well, which is more important)
So, no, there aren't great options, but there are options.
Perhaps you should look at ".mac" as a neat thing. Perhaps Apple is starting their own TLD of.mac.
I envy your enthusiasm:-)
I, however, am one of those people who feel as though the standard (original) TLDs should be the only ones....biz sounds sleazy,.info sounds not trust worthy... don't get me started on the others!
I suppose it would be alright to have a.mac TLD, but copying a Microsoft naming practice is generally not a great idea.
I (think|hope) that one of the other explanations I have heard is correct: it's just the apple developers monkeying around to mess up the rumor sites [and show them who is boss?]. I hope
I recently emailed the guy in charge of ThinkSecret to ask him if he thought that it spoke any to his credibility the fact that the "System Preferences Screenshot" has "firewall" misspelled as "firewal"... and I encouraged him to place the "l" there in order to seem more credible...
He replied that it was Apple's mistake, and that they need to fix it, not him.
He left that image alone, but released a Newer One that is in almost a completely different style- look at the tabs... and "firewal" is now fixed.
I will be SO MAD if apple does the.Mac sh*t. Since when do we copy Microsoft?
Think Secret's integrity as a rumors site is existent only in the fact that it is one of the few rumors sites remaining. This, in turn, is because I believe that Apple is playing them: feeding them doctored images, blatantly false rumors, and such. That would explain why they haven't gotten in trouble yet with apple... and would also explain why half the stuff there seems ludicrous!
I do have to confess, though, I do read Think Secret regularly. Definitely not for an authoritative source of information, but just for fun. Every thing they say should be taken with a grain of salt. No, change that, the whole salt shaker.
1) open it up/Applications/Utilities/NetInfo Manager 2) click the lock to authenticate. 3) use the browser to go to/machines/ 4) click the "Create New Directory" button. 5) modify the new directory you just made to have these attributes: key:ip_address value:204.179.120.93 key:name value:swquery.apple.com key:serves value:./local 6) save the modified netinfo database. it will ask you if you "REALLY" want to do it. if you're sure, agree.
Now if only our feature requests were heeded - tabbed browsing, pop-up killers, ad blockers - in IE sounds good to me!
I'm with you on that one, but the day MSIE has popup killers and ad blockers is going to be the day that lawyers collectively decide that honesty is the best policy.:-)
Hey-
Yes, I was as quick as you guys to jump on microsoft about this... but then I thought about it a little bit. Here's a better plan:
1) Wait until RTL languages are supported natively in Mac OS X (MWNY).
2) THEN Email MBU @ microsoft and complain about lack of support.
Honestly, how can you complain that microsoft doesn't support languages that apple hasn't yet included in the OS? [OS X, not 9].
The hard part is that it's more expensive to own a Mac than it is to own a PC.
ARGH!!! Common misconception!
The Gartner research firm recently showed in a report what all serious mac owners have known for a long time: Macs are cheaper than PCs in the long run.
You fell into the trap: Macs are more expensive to BUY, but less expensive to OWN.
I have macs running that are 8 years old [and older] and they still work just as well as they did when they came out of the box. Nothing has been replaced in these, I just added some more RAM. That's something you don't usually see in wintel machines... instead you see planned obsolescence.
For the price of these 'upgrades' you can get a new G4 at the same speed. Maybe that's what the 'upgrade' is. You send us your old computer, and for the price of a new computer we'll... send you a new computer.
These upgrades are the first ones to work in the cube, so people who have the cube and admire its design probably will be buying this upgrade.
Sure, if it were a choice between upgrading a QuickSilver G4 or buying a new one for a little more money, people would spring for the new one... but it's not the same deal with the cubes.
AFAIK, UFS doesn't allow files to have resource forks, therefore programs that rely on the ability to manipulate resource forks are messed up by being on UFS. Two words: CARBON APPLICATIONS.
In addition, if you're moving from a HFS+ drive to a UFS, and you just simply copy all your stuff over, all your invisible "Icon " files will no longer be invisible on folders that have custom icons. this is a PAIN.
I understand that they missed the warning email that their domain was expiring. That makes sense, and it would be easy [as a spam filter] to confuse something from Dotster as spam.
What I am wondering about is this: when my domain is about a month from expiring, I start to receive PILES of [real] mail from registrars who want me to transfer over to their service... all these letters say stuff like "your domain is expiring..." on the outside of the envelope.
It makes sense that they missed the email, but how did they miss all the letters? [or were they [un]lucky enough to not get them?]
Unless, of course, you get the RAM direct from Apple. No offense to them or anything, but they rip you off when it comes to RAM. Go to Crucial Technology and get yourself just as much ram for half as much money.

What I was saying, however, is that the "newer one" looks like the Graphite Theme in 10.1.5, and the "older one" looks like the Blue Theme in "10.2"

uh-oh, i'm 2 cents poorer
1) open it up /Applications/Utilities/NetInfo Manager /machines/

No affiliation, just observation.

People these days...

Apple's products aren't cheap, but they last.
1) Find a mac.
2) Use the mac to restore it to Factory Condition.
2) Did they actually publish a list of security fixes? I usually like to know what an update does before I install it...

The assertion that 4'33" didn't require an instrument is false.
For a very good analysis of 4'33" check out Larry J Solomon's essay on it.
It's a good thing I don't listen to her music, my sharpie ran out of ink a while ago...
