  1. Multiple monitor support? Has been there. on Is the Key to Linux a Games-Based Distro? · · Score: 2, Informative
Linux has had multiple monitor support for a long time now, even better than Windows.

In Windows, there are only two modes: clone screen and make all the screens a single desktop. XFree86 (which, I'll consider for the point of argumentation a part of Linux) has much better support, and you can even make many seperate, independent desktops, one on each monitor(very useful for monitors that are of different sizes).

Though seemingly useless unless your budget is really tight, you can even hook up an extra USB keyboard and mouse, and have two people simultaniously use the same computer locally. More info here.

The number of things you can do with XFree86 and Linux is endless, and features are developing very fast. Haven't looked at Linux lately? Look again.

  2. Re:Why get music in the real world? on Burnt Coffee and Burnt CDs · · Score: 3, Insightful
Until P2P users or music download services (iTunes, Napster) use lossless compression or no compression, distribution via physical medium will never be completely over with, as right now, it is still the only way to get music without lossy compression.

Moreover, 12" Vinyl has made a huge comeback over the past few years because its "mixable" and "scratchable," on turntables, great for live performance purposes.

  3. Unfortunately, not likely on Burnt Coffee and Burnt CDs · · Score: 5, Insightful

Though Linux is very flexible, without all those licensing issues (go ahead and troll, SCO trolls) like Windows, it is highly unlikely that SBUX and HP are going to use it on this system for two reasons that I know of: 1. They are going to use TabletPC's for this, something Linux has somewhat limited support for, particularly in the handwriting recognition aspect. 2. HP's provider of digital music is most likely going to be Apple, and this means a modified version of iTunes. Apple has not included Linux support for anything.

  4. Then don't! on The Power of Sewage · · Score: 1
Already digested waste could not possibly be more potent as a fuel than undigested food. For example, corn oil could be used to power motors, if it was thinned a little (there was even an article on /. about a diesel engine modification that allowed it to burn corn oil)

There is so much unused food out there in the United States that could be used for fuel purposes, and it would produce much more than the pitiful 50KW/h per 10,000 of this system. Of course, many would argue that this food could be used overseas to feed the hungry nations out there, but really, that's all a myth, because if you give them food, local farmers suffer, governments lower subsidies, and they get screwed over even more.

  6. Re:Eh? Largest? Huh? on Building a Large Linux Knowledgebase · · Score: 2, Insightful
Most of the stuff there is very dated, probably because of either the fact that GNU/Linux is developing at such a rapid pace, or because nobody bothers to write documentation when they see any sign of existing doc.

For example, there currently is only _one_ Chinese support on Linux FAQ, and it not only does not talk about Simplified Chinese, which is, last time I checked, a standard, but is terribly, terribly outdated.

The very structure of LinuxQuestions.org may allow them to produce documentation that is much more recent. While tLDP is all contributed articles by anyone who had some time to write something, LinuxQuestions is on the basis of Q&A. If they make a knowledgebase out of just questions and the most helpful response, it could very well be more useful in terms of bredth than tLDP, though probably not as much so in depth.

If you introduce so much gold into the world that its as abundant as lead, then there would need to be a new rare mineral to back currency. If this was to happen, every currency would be worthless, and so would gold. It would be just like the massive inflation Germany suffered in the 1920's... imagine pushing cartloads of gold to buy one loaf of bread.

  13. What is with Lycoris trying to emulate XP? on Lycoris Shipping Linux OS For Handhelds · · Score: 3, Insightful
One of the biggest reasons why I went with GNU/Linux with X and KDE is the fact that I can configure it to whatever I want it to look and feel. Many distros also seem to have this philosophy, and have created their own unique interfaces, using KDE as a starting point.

However, of all of these distros, Lycoris has tried to emulate WinXP for all their desktop platforms, and now, they are emulating Microsoft's PocketPC OS for their mobile platform, and by doing so, they have conceded that the XP interface is perfect, and something to copy, which it is definately not (just look at the number of people who have added a program that simulates the OS X dock onto their WinXP desktop) This is the reason I will probably never even consider using Lycoris: because the XP interface (IMO) is terrible, and I would definately not use it, or a rip of it, voluentarily.

  15. Bochs is not your answer on Bochs x86 IA-32 Emulator 2.1 Released · · Score: 5, Insightful
Bochs is actually an emulator for an IA32 system, and though it has support for some Windows operating systems, don't expect to be able to do much with it, because its intent was not really to run windows programs on Linux and other OSes.

Many others have already posted this, but VMware != Bochs, because VMware uses virtulization to run a guest OS with minor overhead on a host system. Bochs, on the other hand, emulates everything, even if the host system is IA32, causing massive performance degredation. I see that your applications are rather large scale(3DSMAX and Adobe applications) - and probably would rely heavily on graphics adaptor and memory. Bochs is definately not your answer, as if you could even get it to work, it would be so incredibly slow that you'll forget why you were doing it in the first place before the program even loads (trust me, it has happened before).

Look to VMware to do things like this - it may have a fee attached, but its fast and capable, but not open source.
