    someones probably already mentioned this but things like gccxml would be ALOT easier if there was a stable plug-in API for gcc.

    This would make C++ meta-programming possible

    Maybe because he would have been rejected by Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Rielly as unpatriotic and "supporting America's enemies".

    Also, I bet that he wants to earn some credit for himself and going onto a show like Keith Olbermann or Jon Stewart did that.
    Going to a reputable new source would have taken longer and been less flashy.
    God bless disgruntled whistle-blowers and the corruption they uncover.

    I see that GObject annotation is done through comment formatting.
    This seems a bit weird to me because I've always felt that comments shouldn't mean anything.
    Eg. You should be able to obfuscate the code (strip all of the comments and change the function/method/class/variable names) and it should still work the same.

    Qt's system of using macros to provide annotation seems a lot more sane to me.
    It's also more similar to how Java and C# annotations work.

    You're forgetting the $500 - $2500 it costs to buy a mac to actually run xcode on.
    By contrast, android development is entirely crossplatform so I can run their IDE (eclipse) on my ubuntu machine.

    Well, I guess if you are going to be a apple whore, you might as well be an apple whore all the way.

    No seriously does it?

    Because in the past broadcom has released chips with ZERO linux support which have been successfully in the marketplace and
    then required years for people to reverse engineer them.

    I suspect the same will happen here... :(

    It seems silly to me that car makers don't install a mpg meter on every new car sold.
    I can easily imagine this would immediately cause drivers to drive more efficiently
    because THEY WOULD SEE HOW MUCH GAS THEY ARE BURNING!!
    Most people don't realize that when they accelerate from a standstill to 60mph,
    they are wasting way more gas then if they slowly accelerated.
    Hell, there could even be competitions to see how efficiently/speed people are...
    (oh wait there already are such competitions...)

    Maybe installing mpg meters should be mandated by the federal government as a cheap easy measure
    until alternative fuel cars become viable

    Obama's not taking money from PACs just individuals.
    If that's corrupted, its too bad but at least it's a step in the right direction.

    After looking into the text of the bill itself, I found this under the list of duties on the IP czar:
    (8) adopt an official seal, which shall be judicially noticed; and

    Right now, Google and the porn industry notwithstanding, nobody has really figured out how to make money off the Internet in the more localized news market, where the majority of advertisers (small business) and consumers are.

    Not totally true. i've heard of rumors of marketers being able to target extremely local populations by tracking cookies and reading ip addresses.
    I think localized internet news is around the corner.

    I suspect that bendable electronics and digital ink will soon advance to the point where your "laptop" will be indistinguishable from a think sheet of paper. Look at the ibook air for a really good example of this. I suspect that it'll be easier to use a custom device to read the news in the year 2010 but you never know considering how fast laptops are evolving.

    That's hilarious considering that KDE is loosely designed to be like windows but more powerful.

    I use kubuntu all of the time at home now and am eagerly looking forward to hoary for it's updates.

    I guess since /. is the best place for a tribute:

    I spent alot of my teenage years pouring over the D&D rulebook and then the AD&D rulebook.
    I loved adventuring through the keep on the borderlands and fighting weird trolls in Dragonland.

    I really like his Grayhawk universe. It felt more real and vibrant then the Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance universes.
    Really liked his Gord the Rogue series. They were inspiring and just right for a boy of 12.

    Well, I guess I need to go back to my storage and find that original dungeon masters manual and try to play those great games over
    again with my friends.

    Damn, gary, you will be missed.
    Thanks so much for the inspirational ideas and fantasizes that you created.

    I hope that the future fantasy makers (I'm looking at you blizzard!!) will maintain his spirit of fun in their adventures.

    After doing some research for a decent windows profile, the only manually controlled M$ profiler is only available in their very expensive team edition.

    The one which does the automatic reordering of ops doesn't count because it doesnt actually show the user ANYTHING!

    Well, there is always the possibility of someone suing the ISP for allowing their customers to be part of a DDOS.
    Maybe once this happens, the ISPs will have to modify their contacts to allow themselves the right to shutdown your connection if your computer is part of a botnet.

    Then maybe this botnet problem will mostly go away....

    Truth me told, most "automated" weapons are more like remote control, for precisely this reason.

    Humm, what about those anti-missle/anti-aircraft guns on US navy boats now?
    Those are completely automated because of the latency time for a human in the loop would be too slow.

    I wonder how safe they really are too though....
