  4. Whats the process technology? on AMD Launches Low-Voltage Processors · · Score: 1

When you get to 90nm features on a processor the gate leakage of the transistors increases by quite a high degree - so although you get a voltage step down the power remains the same or increases... I would guess this is a .13um process.. Anyone know?

  5. Same problems as I had with tape - on CDs May be Less Immortal than We Thought · · Score: 1

But when they work the fidelity is better... I have lost count of the amount of unuseable discs I have created over the years - CD's shattering as I have taken them out of the case, scratches where they've actually slid down under the car seat and given themselves a nice buffing up from outside to centre.. I could go on... The point is in real everyday use (lets say before the time of the iPod) CD's are, in terms of reliability, every bit as disposable as tapes.. In a strange twist of irony I should point out that the first CD I bought ever is one of the very few pre 1990 CD's I have left and is still in great condition.. But again I don't think the manufacturing was so cheap back then either..

As previous posts quite rightly say, the impurities of the mains supply will always be filtered out to the degree demanded of the electronic equipments spec. As for CE, These are the european version of the FCC rules. Again, well designed equipment will 'filter' out variations in the power supply I doubt it will make any difference to the amount of interference generated by electrical and electronic devices. Conversly I doubt their susceptibility will alter either. Now if they had changed the frequency of the supply......

Diabetes is a real killer. Basically a fatal disease? Thanks for the vote of confidence but its not a life sentence if you watch what you eat and take your insulin correctly. (this is why I tape my mobile to my head when bobsleighing) I think we could just get rid of a lot of this with the statement 'everything in moderation' I've always drunk lots off tea/coffee/caffeinated soda's, but didn't stop me getting type I several years ago....

I heard the original Iridium handsets wouldn't work inside buildings, hence its massive failure (3000 users worldwide was the figure I was told)

  18. Works for me on Ways to Beat the Telecommuting Blues? · · Score: 2

I started this about three years ago as Field apps for an FPGA company, most the time I work and play from my (small) flat. Granted, I do get to see some customers on a weekly basis but this can be limited. I make sure I go out for a walk every morning, and take at least an hour a day to visit friends nearby/go to the park/excercise/whatever. Try and go to the office of whoever you are working for once a week and work 'on site' where you can, and when you feel like it (this is the bonus part). The most important thing that I had difficulty was freedom overload, which lead to some late starts/late finishes, and I felt tied to the office as I could never escape. Set yourself firm targets for the day and when they are complete, finish. If you can hide the computer (my laptop goes in its bag in a cupboard now instead of screaming 'email!' at me all night) Yesterday, I had to get the London underground home early morning with the rest of the sheeple and it was a fucking nightmare. Made me remember/realise how lucky I am to be able to roll out of bed any time I like (within reason) and be at the office. I don't have to leave the flat for a smoke break and I can read /. as much as I like without my manager looking over my shoulder.

A related topic, when on holiday in the south of France earlier this year (Montpelier) I noticed on several street corners there were 16x16 mosaic tile grids of two (but varying from motfi to motif) colours used to make a logo of a space invader (exactly the same graphic as the original space invader). No one knew who had put them there or what they were for. I must have seen about 10 in the time I was there... All about 10ft in the air, so must've needed some time and a ladder.. No text though.. Homage to this guy or something altogether less sinister... I guess I'll never know.... Unless.....
