But you have to take into account improvements to the technology along the way. For example, in two years we will probably be able to make them faster, and in 20 years probably have a completely new method of construction.
In 112,113 years we probably won't need space elevators.
Ok - one question - why have they not been released on DVD until now?
I mean - DVD quality is great - and I would argue a perfect medium for the Star Wars movies and had they been released on DVD in the past, I would have bought them.
You want him to GIVE you a set of DVD's? Maybe he should just mail everyone in the US a set, becuase hey, we all own the VHS.
No. He obviously has about 15 different versions in mind and releases them piecemeal. For example, regular, widescreen, special edition, special edition widescreen and now we will have DVD edition, DVD widescreen, DVD special edition, DVD special edition widescreen, then HD DVD edition, HD DVD edition widescreen, HD DVD special edition, HD DVD special edition widescreen, then we start getting into Director's Cut editions and so on.
Quite frankly he's taking the piss. You can't even be smart and wait a few years like I did in the past - oh no - he comes out with something that you never thought of in the past like HD DVD.
I mean if people want to keep throwing money at the guy by buying the same movies over and over again then that's their business but I can't help feeling that it's exploitation.
...and even a death threat taped to his front door -- all of which he said came from people opposed to his publicizing a commercial version of technology that until now has been mainly used by software programmers and the computer hackers' underground.
And as we all know, you seriously don't want to piss off computer programmers. I hear they can get as large as 400lbs.
...they'd go one step further. They'd send the new password directly to his voice mailbox...
Actually there are lots of voicemail systems out there in "idiot mode" that ID the user from their caller ID and wil dump them straight into their voicemail without any authentication.
Feeding that number into this service and spoofing the callers number would theoretically allow anyone access to someone's voicemail should they know the numbers involved.
As opposed to what? An "illegal" download system? Is there such a thing? The last time I checked it's what you use it for, not the system that is potentially illegal.
I'd really much prefer a sanctioned execution system for spammers. In that scenario, sure I'd pull the lever. Either that or they get sentenced to be force fed everything they advertise (and in the event its not tangible, a hardcopy of every message...)
(BTW that guy didn't get modded down - he posted as AC.)
I've often thought about this. All we need is a bounty site with a PayPal button. Dont like spam? Click here to donate to the "kill a spammer fund". All cash over and above the hitman's fee donated to stopping spammers.
It would be interesting to see the internet's price / footprint reach reversed. One dollar a piece should cover the fee to wipe out an entire nest of the bastards.
Either way, 20 minutes is not long enough to download patches.
One would think people are stupid here. Firstly, it's an AVERAGE of 20 minutes you idiot - this does not mean you have a 20 minute counter that starts from when you connect to the net. It means that ON AVERAGE machines connected by a novice will be compromised within 20 minutes.
For about the tenth time, here is how to do it.
NB. At no point connect the system to a network until the following has been carried out.
Install WindowsXP.
Set up Internet connection, but do NOT connect yet.
Right click on My Network Places > Properties
Right click on your Internet interface, >Properties.
UNTICK anything with "Microsoft" in the name. i.e. File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks, Client for Microsoft Networks. Leave TCP/IP ticked.
Click "Advanced".
Click "Protect My Computer"
Click OK.
right click on "My Computer" > Properties.
Click "Automatic Updates"
Turn on Automatic Updates using whatever option you prefer.
That's it - connect to the net and it will patch itself.
Why is this so fucking difficult for the/. crowd? You are supposed to be IT adepts. Act like it and stop fucking whining.
I've never downloaded a virus from USENET for the exact same reason. People would love to nail this guy if he's wrong, yet no one can. Why? Because he's right and you're not.
I do not believe it is actually possible to "not be right" when asking a question.
I asked the poster how he knows that the MD5 hash he posted is legitimate. I also asked him to say why we should trust him. These are questions, not statements and so therefore any mention of me being "right" or "wrong" is a misnomer.
And stop posting as AC - it's childish. If you can't back an opinion with your ID then don't bother. For all I know you are the original poster which beings us back to our trust issue.
You don't have to take his word for it. Do you see one single comment saying it's wrong and giving the "correct" one? No. They OSDN must me in on the conspiracy. Your not taking his word for it, you're taking the word of a community.
So what you are effectively saying is that the lack of anyone saying it's wrong means it's 100% legitimate?
I've never downloaded a virus from USENET for the exact same reason. People would love to nail this guy if he's wrong, yet no one can. Why? Because he's right and you're not.
See.. the problem here is that using your method, someone must first examine the entity in question to "decide" if it's legitimate or not. Take your USENET example - someone posts virus. You would sit and wait for someone to tell you it's a virus before not downloading? Ok.. so how long do you wait? Do you wait until you see a follow up post saying "hey I downloded it and it's legit!"? (possibly by the same guy) or does the absence of any posts in x period mean it's legit? What if nobody sees the potential virus or worse what if lots of people see it but nobody bothers downloading it because they dont need to download it to know its suspicious and experience has taught them not to download things from USENET anyway?
With the XP SP2, imagine if some evil haxx0rs had effectively rootkitted it. What if the people who download it do not possess the skills to detect the rootkit, or they simply do not bother checking - "looks fine to me" - then post the MD5 hash?
The only effective way to get around this issue is code signing, however you can bet your life that someone somewhere has some form of hack that makes things look legit when they are not.
The reason Apple only have a tiny market share, is that you can't buy their computers. Sure you can pay for them, but you cant buy them.
Case in point - January 2004 - I took out a loan for a DP2.0G5 - "Noooo" community said - wait for the "rumoured speed bumps"... so I waited.
April 2004 - still no new G5's, may as well wait for the promised DP3.0 which was promised by Steve Jobs himself on stage at WWDC2003.
9th June comes... and... no DP3.0 "anytime soon" but here's a liquid cooled DP2.5.... *order* *order*
Confirmation email - "Thankyou for your order. We expect to ship your G5 on or before 2nd AUGUST 2004". Bugger.
*wait* *wait* one business day before 2nd August - "Demand has been phenomenal... we now hope to deliver on or before 20th August..."
After all of that I got so annoyed I cancelled. Couple this with the fact whenever we order any Mac's at work and they seem to take three months minimum to deliver, then we tend these days to just look at Dell.
Message to Apple - you make good products (well the build quality lately sucks but thats cheap middle east manufacturing for you - look at IBM hard drives) - perhaps consider actually shipping them when you say you will along with keeping your customers informed. If you had told me in April "due to chip issues we cant make a DP3.0 but we should have a DP2.5" then I could have made my decision right then rather than waiting to be let down.
Incidentally I went and bought a DP2.0 off the shelf so it's not all bad, however I could have had this system back in January and not felt hard done by. As it stands, my perception of Apple is one of "Nice products, shame about the customer service" and considering that professionally I am the person that would choose if our organisation buys 50 Macs or 50 PCs, I'm not the type of person you want to piss off really, but too late.
But you have to take into account improvements to the technology along the way. For example, in two years we will probably be able to make them faster, and in 20 years probably have a completely new method of construction.
In 112,113 years we probably won't need space elevators.
All it would need to do is turn on automatic updates. The machine will do the rest.
Ok - one question - why have they not been released on DVD until now?
I mean - DVD quality is great - and I would argue a perfect medium for the Star Wars movies and had they been released on DVD in the past, I would have bought them.
So why no DVD version until now?
How much music have you re-bought?
Nothing. Ever.

...noting that the digitized films have also been converted to HD for later release as high-definition DVDs.
Just when you thought there couldn't be any possible way to get even MORE money out of fans by selling the SAME movies AGAIN - HD DVD's.
How many versions is that now?
How many versions in HD will we have? All of the previous ones? (HD 'Special Edition' anyone?)
Thank god other movie companies don't follow suit - I could do without 15 different versions of Gigli clogging up stores.
For questions about labour law, if you want a proper answer ask a lawyer.

However...
Jepson, an entrepreneur who lives in a gated community in Southern California,...
So how does someone get in to stick a death threat to someone's door without people noticing?

It will probably be turned into a comedy chick flick.
FARENHEIT 451 - THE TEMPERATURE THAT *LOVE* BURNS!
Starring Ben Stiller & Cameron Diaz
Oh, well, we can hope that the new Fahrenheit 451 will be treated with a bit more respect.
You don't know Hollywood very well do you?
Because, he's obsessed with, William, Shatner?
...it can also make better drivers out of everyone if insurance rates are adjustable based on the way everyone drives.
Boy are the insurance companies in for a shock.
The RIAA, it should be noted, claims that they weren't "behind the discontinuation of the PCR".
Bet they are gutted. They could have played with more law suits and everything. Think of all the missed lawyer fees!

Not "objectionable", "questionable"; considering they are attempting to promote P2P technology as legitimate (as it should be) to the powers that be.
Are you telling me a judge is going to look at that and think "oh yeah - I can see how that is obviously only used to distribute legal material"?
