As a non-watcher of television, and someone who legally does not require a TV licence I hate and despise TV licensing and their campaign of constant harrassment.
A few inaccuracies in your post however - firstly by law one does not require a TV licence for merely owning a TV set, however the letters TV licensing send out are crafted to make it sound like this.
The letters I constantly receive (some ARE delivered by hand during 'visits' (however I've yet to be home when they come) states that "it is illegal to use or install any television receiving equipment, to receive or record television programme services, without a valid TV Licence. Such equipment includes TV receivers, video recorders, set-top boxes, computers with broadcast cards and other television receiving equipment".
Note the use of the word 'use' and the part about 'receive or record' - so far so good right?
Now the next part of the letter you get:
"If you do not have a TV receiver, please write to us at the above address so that we can update our records. If you do this, we will contact you in due course."
Wait a minute - didn't they previously say it's only illegal to USE equipment but now if I don't HAVE one I'm require to tell them in writing?
Er.. hello?
I've checked it out and by law you only NEED a license if you USE receiving equipment to receive or record broadcasts - and the bit they don't tell you - that originate from the UK. Perfectly legal for example for me to hook up a satellite dish to a VCR and TV and point it at a German sat so long as none of it's broadcasts originate in the UK.
If you don't buy a TV license in the UK, then you are subject to (what I honestly believe is illegal) constant harassment including monthly letters and house visits. When I tell this tale for some reason at this point I get strange people telling me 'if you don't like TV don't buy it' - let me get something crystal clear - I don't like it so I don't buy it. My issue is very much with the fact that I am harassed for not owning a license. I don't want TV - I don't need a licence.
Notice in the letter they say they have written to me without reply - this is correct - I don't reply to them. I tried at my last address doing things their way which involves calling them on their national rate 0870 number (~20c / minute) or taking the time and trouble to write a letter, print it out and post it to them (all at my expense). Why should I spend a single penny telling them I'm not breaking the law? Especially since they simply continue to harass me regardless?
Mac OSX has no backup at ALL. (ditto doesn't count).
If you spring for '.Mac' you get a crappy buggy backup program, however by default the OS has no backup mechanism whatsoever aside from copying files.
Yes OSX is essentially BSD but you can't even simply use tar as it won't store the weird resource fork data from the HFS+ filing system.
About the simplest way to do it is using DiskUtility to make a virtual disk image and copy data into that using ditto, however this is rather longwinded and a simple Apple supported backup utility supplied with the OS would be greatly appreciated.
Lets get one thing straight here - I come from a Mac hating background. I always thought, and still do, that OS9 is a piece of crap. It is.
OSX I always said was the one to watch, and sure enough it won me over. *NIX core with useable GUI.
The Mac isn't purely about speed. It's about being able to work comfortably and quickly. The main reason I bought a G5 was to run Cubase SX and it does this very very well. I have had literally no issues with the OS getting in the way. The other reason was the 1Ghz front side bus per 2Ghz 64bit CPU meaning it's unparalleled for multimedia apps.
...but then I sprung the $2000 for a DP G5 and another $2000 on a PowerBook. What can I say - I have the money.
I strongly agree with what someone else said about the Mac's stability being very much a function of the fact it runs on known hardware configurations.
Don't get me wrong here - Windows has it's place. I have my XP machine which I use for games and believe it or not Quicken as in UK form is not available for the Mac.
Well the waiting is over - the new game is called 'Bioshock' and is not System Shock related- well apart from the fact it has the word 'shock' in the title and apparently gamespot consider this appealing to System Shock 2 fans.
The original System Shock is a classic - I absolutely loved that game. SS2 was even better, however its much more creepy to play if you turn off the in-game music and just have the sounds of the things moving around.
If they announce a sequel I'll be a happy man indeed.
...Never got infected through Internet Explorer or Outlook Express though. I don't use antivirus software and I don't get viruses or spyware.
Forgive me for pointing out the obvious, but how do you know?
Absolutely nothing you have there would prevent the latest GDI exploit from running code of attackers choice on your Windows box by you doing nothing more complicated than viewing an image.
I just hope the original designer of the Space Hopper is alive to see this.
I can just picture him now as some crazy old guy who keeps shouting "I told you so! I told you so! See? Nobody believed Old Crazy Jim when he said.." etc.
I've often wondered about this - for something like SA, obviously spammer scumbags are going to be picking apart the source with a fine tooth comb looking for ways to beat the filters.
For applications like this, would closed source be a better choice?
Obviously the more people working on filters should (theoretically) lead to better filters, however this will also be true for spammer scum.

Better to ignore them and avoid the visitors.
You would be both amazed and appalled. Most OSX application files use the resource fork from my experience.

Listen to me sounding like a zealot.

Bah. Bring back Shodan.
Thats obviously an alien mind control device.
Boy I bet the aliens were pissed when they realised they wasted all that money.
According to the rules set by the Commission on Presidential Debates, candidates are not allowed to bring anything with them on stage
So he was naked then?
Anyone remember the Church of Shodan?
There used to be a site but I can't seem to find it - anyone know the link?

Often the problem is not if one has milk, but if the milk one has is sour.
Also, I am trying to imagine using a WAP-enabled phone in the way you suggest, but in my mind I cannot get past swearing at it for not working.
...is quite common - it's called simply a "Helpdesk".
We use it to deal with questions from mental ages up until, oh, around three yeas old.
Nooooo! Surely not! Nooooo!
Glad I live in Britain - our 10 Downing Street would NEVER lie!
Oh no - wait...

Yeah - SURE it's just for education - it will be a spy satellite in disguise! Probably carrying some nukes too in case Pakistan gets out of line.
Now all we need is the rumoured wireless iPod interface and the ability to stream music to the glas...er.. eyewear.
Now that would be cool.
The poll is misleading - speaking from the UK you will find that most people don't particularly care for Kerry - we just hate Bush.
Literally anybody but Bush in the next election would be great. The guy is a moron.

Have you ever tried?
You know I know a builder who doesn't use computers at all. You know what? Now I think about it, he's NEVER been haxx0red!

Why is the parent modded flamebait? It's a perfectly valid concern.
The usual reason I can't get to Google is because the DNS is down. So much for no single point of failure.
In that case try http://66.102.9.104/.
Always nice to have an alternative in the event you can't get to Google for whatever reason. Bit of redundancy and competition never hurt anyone.
