Ok..maybe Andorra. hmmm no...they probably harbor some Basques.

Some South Pacific island? naaa....they're screwing over the neighboring island just like everyone else.

If you can come up with a list of such countries, that would be a VERY short list. Not saying such actions are right, but don't single out the US.

More energy expended cycling over walking? I think not. Moving me 3.5 miles to work walking expends more energy than moving me+30lb bike when cycling. The mechanical advantage of the bike gearing overcomes the bikes own weight.

And cycling takes less out of my pocket. $1 each way for the bus (estimate, because I have no actual idea) = the cost of a new bike every year. As my two current bikes are 5 and 23 years old, I think I'm ahead on that aspect. Cycling isn't free (tires, chains, maintenance) but it sure is cheaper than anything but walking. And far faster.

Cycling to work also takes the place of other, necessary exercise. If I weren't cycling, I'd have to be doing something else. Expending those same calories. Cycling allows me to multitask on the way to work...exercise and transport.

    Besides....I like cycling. Period.

They were designed to allow a normal strength human to steer/stop it. When you design in power assist, the engineers can change the ratios to account for the power assist. A car built with power steering is pretty hard (but not impossible) to drive when it quits. I had an 'interesting' ride in my fathers '75 Ford Torino when the pump quit one night on a twisty downhill road. Very hard to steer more than a couple of degrees.

The first group of astronauts were at the apex of the pilot pyramid. A VERY competitive field. Test pilots are engineers who happen to fly extremely well.

And it was not quite as simple as you make it seem, because no one had ever done it before. NASA didn't simply build it and dump some random warm body in it. The astronauts were as much a part of the development team as the sliderule carrying geeks. The campaigned (and won) for windows ("Oh, the extra stress factor!"), and a control stick to actually fly the damn thing.

Get off your military bashing, and realize that some people go into the military for other reasons beyond "a bleak future". That is the only place where you can fly fighter jets. If you'd ever flown or ridden in one, or known some of these pilots, you might get the merest inkling of what these guys were all about.

If you live in an apartment, you're in trouble. You can toos a regular bike over your shoulder no problem. A 75lb eBike is something else.

Be sure to beef up the kickstand, and watch the CoG. The Huffy model I tried would not stay upright on the stock kickstand (too much weight in the back).
