    Not without Apple recompiling OS X for Cell. The Cell might be have Power based core, but the differences from what's been used in Macs are significant.

    Linux is supported on the Cell by IBM. Linux already runs on the Cell. And if it was so easy to port to the 360, why can't MS do backwards compatibility?

    YES! OMG YES!!!! This is a dream come true. Thank you Sony. Thank you IBM. WTF is this in the Games section? This is big news for a sub set of geeks. This will be the largest installed base linux has, on interesting hardware.

    Here's a summary of, among others, the study you describe. The data is clear; intelligence is strongly hereditary (0.8+), and the most strongly correlated indicator of future success. There are some data points in there that I found truly stunning, and it's no wonder we're politically unable to touch it.

    I first read Cochran's paper on gnxp.com, where it's been kicking around for a while before publication. If anyone is interested in a (much) deeper and smarter look at these topics, go there.

    The scientists interviewed make a couple of points I think have little grounding in fact. One is confusing "advanced" with "evolved". A longer period of time to evolve does not imply greater intelligence. All creatures are equally well "evolved".

    The other is stating that an advanced civilization would shun planets for artificial habitats. For an astronomer, he seems unfamiliar with the fact that the universe is largely cold, empty space with nasty hazards and such. Why would a race automaticly want to go live in space?

    AI can, and more and more often is, coded with vectors. Physics always has been. MS has been trying to suggest that the Cell will lag behind in physics calculations.

    I don't know what kind of physics they are doing, but my physics code is usually very interested in the stuff after the decimal point.

    You're lowballing by an order of magnitude or two. The Cell (one cell) has been demoed decoding 48 MPEG-2 stream simutainously using 6 of the 7 or 8 available SPUs. (7 in PS3, but could be 8 in other uses)

    What if you're wrong?

    The 360's CPU appears not to exist at this point in time, or at least, not in a form that can be shown to people. The Cell certainly exists, and 'in lab' runs at 4+ GHz, but the few Cells in the wild have all been sporting gigantic heat sinks, even though IBM 's published papers describe a cool chip.

    IBM promised the same thing to Jobs. This time they have a new fab, new designs, one lost customer and three new ones who all stand to sell more units than Apple ever did.

    I really hope IBM delivers, but Apple just did something amazingly ballsy, that I certainly didn't expect, and I'm sure they had reasons.
