The foundation of quantum physics is not comparable to making shit up because it's convienient. For example "the Earth is the center of the universe" or "let's make a new form of hydrogen instead of going to physics 210".
It's not a fucking "theory". Don't get hung up on semantics, it's a mass of equations and solutions built from axioms that tends to be acurate to more decimal places than weeks this story will see. If I say 1+1=3, will you invest in my stock? Probably not.
#2. Oil is a finite resource, and the oil age will end. The oil industry is fully aware of this, and realize that they must one day become energy companies.
Of course, selling dirt cheap solar panels, etc, to suburbia isn't quite in their best interest just yet. The aquisition of a state right beside Saudi Arabia will keep it going for a while.
"and there's nothing in there about weight" Yes there was, under risk factors; "obesity". Also known as "fat".
"Wow. That was, um, an excessively intense response to a simple suggestion" No it wasn't, your post opened with an insult; "It's interesting how you're able to mix the insightful with the oblivious. Most people can't do that.", in the same smug tone as your post above.
And you're wrong, IMO, inactivity (lazy) and the resultant obesity (fat) in people (slobs) can lead to diabetes.
Researchers demoed a system that does a very challenging task, not perfectly, but enough that they didn't get laughed at, and some reporters thought it worth writing a story about.
You demand that it work perfectly, and that they present you with a web interface.
"vanishingly small values of common"? Just because it's not in 'Learn Java in 21 Days" doesn't make it exotic. Every game, graphics routine, audio/video codec, and more touch on vectors.
Regarding your first point; Search engines index websites without those websites having been submitted, the subbmision is simply a way for the site operator to ensure that it does get indexed. The accepted method for a site admin to keep contents from being indexed is the robots.txt file.
The Greeks ended as an empire in 146 BC, when Rome defeated the Achaean League and and razed Cornith as a final gesture of power. The end of Ancient Greece is usually considered the death of Alexander the Great, 323 BC.
I takes money to make and distribute hardware. They are making a piece of hardware that will be running linux, and asking linux types 'how could this be better?' What you get is a piece of hardware that is hopefully better suited to your needs than, say, a PSP.
Just like OSS, nobody is forcing you to participate.
The town of Prince George (~500 miles N of the border) in BC appears to be served by Telus and Shaw, offering the same packages they do in Vancouver. However, PG is a town of ~70,000, and I'm sure it becomes much more difficult a few miles out of town. There are many rural communities practically on the border that don't have broadband.
"your home internet connection is not for running a web server."
Why not? How about a VLC broadcast? Or a torrent seeder? ISP's have sold people on a crippled internet. It wasn't supposed to have aysymetric connections, with devices hidden behind NAT and with ports capped.
The social changes the internet has already affected came about through uploading.
If more people had more bandwidth, more and better services could be provided, both commercially and privately. I probably downloaded 2 or 3 200M+ files on dialup, tops, now I do it several times a week. I never used internet radio on dialup, even if it was possible. I look forward to streaming HD and thin clients everywhere.
Yes he posts a lot. Yes he sometimes states the obvious. On the other hand, he resonably often says something useful, can spell and construct sentences, and, as far as I know, is not waging a war as an anonymous coward against others. His OP above, even if he didn't mention b-trees, is still a true statment. I think I'd rather have him over for dinner than you.
I'm the OP, and I know it's easy to smirk at 99% of USians who think they're skiing when they're not, but there is some great skiing down there (Utah, Arizona, Montana), and people (maybe too many) who know how to ski it.
A web application framework, like Ruby on Rails, can isolate you from most of the JS. Here is a introduction to Rails and Ajax.
Although they screwed it up. It should read "Goto considered helpful"

Sigh....it's really hard to start playing again after some really stupid death, but I know I will....
You demand that it work perfectly, and that they present you with a web interface.
What the fuck have you done?
"vanishingly small values of common"? Just because it's not in 'Learn Java in 21 Days" doesn't make it exotic. Every game, graphics routine, audio/video codec, and more touch on vectors.
Shit, I thought of posting and thanking him for all the links and research he had done....
Go on, mod me 'insightfull' or mod me 'flamebait', it's one or the other.
It isn't a computer, though.
You hijack someone elses post to bitch about taxes, because you're being 'serious'? Get a clue.
Not really. If there was no drag, the orbit would last forever.

You seem to have a misunderstanding of the word 'analog'. Maybe you shouldn't be getting your physics education from The Register?

I'm sure you're wrong. One can't post and moderate in the same disscusion.
Then Rails is Ruby's Video Toaster. Rails is pretty hot, and it doesn't seem to be slowing down.
Miller's Quest is the most fun I've had playing an RPG in years! Nice work.
Still, I know we have it good.
