  1. Internet 101 on ISPs Offer Faster Speeds, Why Don't We Get Them? · · Score: 1

How did this even make it on /.??? Your INTERNET speeds are based on _TWO_ things. The speed of your connection, and the speed of the slowest pipe to your destination. No matter who your provider is, ALWAYS use the speed test site provided by your provider! 3rd party speed test only tell you how fast you can get data to and from THEM! If they are overloaded your speeds will look like !sht.

If you have a DOCSIS based connection and you have slow speeds to your providers speed test site. Check for packet-loss! As little as 2-3% packet-loss will greatly reduce your speeds. Anything more then 1% packet-loss is a sign of a problem.

I could go on forever but this topic shouldn't even be on /.

  8. Every time some asshat tries to sell an emulator.. on Nintendo Patents Handheld Emulation, Cracks Down · · Score: 1

Every time some asshat tries to sell an emulator something like this happens. While this patent stems from UltraHLE (which was free) you have to remember UltraHLE came out during the actual market life of the N64. Besides UltraHLE, companies really haven't cared to much about emulation, except when some asshat is selling an emulator (bleem!, VGS). While the legal battles that stemmed from those emulators proved emulation is legal. It may not have ever gone to court if the emulators were not for sale. I wish people would quit developing emulators for the purpose of selling them(especially during the market life of the emulated unit). Respect the fact the game makers put up millions in R&D and you are not entitled to any of it! While Nintendo's current way of handling this sucks, and can stand to hurt the emulation scene. The honestly may not of had any other choice. This probably the only time you will ever see say big brother is right.

  9. Try being black! on Search and Seizure at the Supreme Court · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm amused by how shocked you all are. I'm black, and to make matters worst I've lived in Wisconsin most of my live. Milwaukee is a nice city with very few racial issues, but as soon as you step foot out of the city limits, it's a whole new world. These types of things have happened to me countless times. If there is a cop behind me and I am outside the city limits there is a 90% chance I will be pulled over. They will simply follow behind me until I make a little mistake, or I have left their jurisdiction.

I've been pulled over for going 3 mph over the speed limit, pulled over for "looking suspicious" (AKA being black in a white neighborhood), pulled over for "matching the description" (black male about 5' 10", isn't that like 70 of black men?), pulled over for "running a red light" (that was clearly still yellow after i cleared the intersection), the list goes on and on. Each time my car is searched, I'm searched, they find nothing and I go away without as much a warning because they know they had no reason to stop me in the first place.

    Here's a good story...
My cousin and I were cementing the base of my aunts garage. I went in the house to get more cement. When I came back out I find two officers, with weapons drawn pointed at my cousin. Now to draw the proper mental picture my cousin is of course black, the officers are white, one is holding a shotgun, the other is holding his sidearm. My cousins hands are covered in cement, he has a bucket of cement at his side, and a spatchel (or whatever its called) in his hands. I say "what the heck is going on here?". Cop1 "we got a report of break ins in this area". Me "Are you blind? We live here, we have for 10 years! We're fixing the garage." cop2 "Sir put your hands up!" I put my hands up, this exchange goes on for 5 minutes. They get a radio call, and proceed to their car. I request the officers badge number to file a complaint. He slams the car door in my face and they drive away.

The sad thing is I have many more stories like this, and so does pretty much every black person I know. Maybe from now on I will start video taping myself everywhere I go.

  10. Greedy cable ISP's!?!? on How Much Broadband Usage is Too Much? · · Score: 1

I find it very interesting that it's mostly cable providers sending bandwidth notices. While cable speeds are on average twice as fast as DSL (at least in my area). Cable providers (at least TW/RR) have considerably cheaper operational cost. They own the entire network down to the line that runs into your house. No leasing of lines, or space at the local CO. While the FCC has made sure DSL providers could get those for a song, its still an expense.

At the time the machine was fine, but already the machine is going to be on the lower end of the performance spectrum. The major problem with laptops as gaming rigs is that there is no upgrading the video processor! Had my friend bought a pc, not only would it have been cheaper, but with the money he saved he could have upgraded the video card two or three times! The proprietary design of laptops is what keeps them out of any sensible gamer's top pick for gaming devices. Wouldn't you agree?

  20. This is going to cause problems MS (And I'm glad) on Microsoft XP License Prohibits VNC · · Score: 2, Informative

The reason I say this is going to cause MS some problems is becuase of a experience I just went through with a game server. I set up a Ghost Recon dedicated server at the colo facilites where I work. Wasn't I surprised when I found out that you can NOT use Remote Desktop to start the game, because the game engages a Direct x window that MUST draw to the local screen. Since Remote Desktop draws the remote client the server dies. Thank God for VNC. If it wasn't for VNC I'd have to drive to work just to make changes to the game. Pretty lame.

If only Ubi would port the server to linux I'd be a happy man.
