Other problems will keep the technology from reaching the mass market for at least a decade, experts say, including onboard storage of flammable hydrogen, reliability, durability and cost.
DaimlerChrysler plans to have 30 fuel cell buses working in 10 European cities next year. Ford Motor Co. has a fuel cell Focus, aided by a battery for acceleration, that it plans to lease for fleet customers in early 2004.
So why the heck will take another 10 years to reach mass market? Are they saying that these buses and fleet cars are unreliable, expensive, and ready to blow up?
Yeah, god bless all the weapons and explosives they let on board planes. God bless them for whining about how much it will cost to reinforce cockpit doors. God bless them for not installing explosive detection equipment so we won't have to wait in long lines. Also, if you're going to expose passengers to all this danger at least give out free beer so we won't care if we die, instead of charging $4 a fricking bottle.
So what would be so difficult about converting to Linux? In my experience KDE is just as easy to use as windows and OpenOffice is just as easy to use as MS Office. Not to mention avoiding liscensing fees and security hazards.
Already Linux/Unix dominates the server market. We're getting stories almost weekly with increasing frequency about large companies, governments, and school systems switching both servers and clients to Linux. How many stories do you see about companies switching from Linux to Windows??? It's just a matter of time now:)
I c# went totally open source, it would at least have that over Java. In my experience 95% of developers have a negative attitude toward M$, and making c# open might help with this. I think developer opinion is important because they often choose which products/languages to use. Personally I would never choose M$ development languages over Java because of the closed/platform dependant nature.
We should colonize mars now before we destroy ourselves with nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction. I would think it could be done relatively cheaply with all that water already on the planet.
WTF, last time I checked OpenOffice reads in MS Office files quite well. No need to resave all your files into text! If you're worried about loss of access to old files just keep one copy of MS Office around so you can resave into a format OpenOffice can read properly.
As a former game programmer I can tell you that it's very similar to the record industry. Normally in video game development you have a publisher, a development studio, and programmers/artists that work for the game studio. The publisher gets most of the money, then the game studio, then the programmers/artists get crap. In my experience game programmers make much less and work longer hours than people in other industries. Though game programming is much more challenging and fun!
It said "Linux-terminal" computer labs, so it sounds like everyone doesn't have a full blown computer. So hardware could be much less than $800. I think more details are needed on this.
Also, why would anyone need to use "csh command structure" on Linux anymore than they would need to use MS-DOS mode in Windows? KDE is very similar to Windows and StarOffice is very similar to MS Office. I'm sure kids easily learn both.
Also, how about teaching kids to do the right thing even if it's not the easiest course of action. I'm sick of my tax dollars being wasted by buying M$ crap. Everyone here needs to educate their local school districts on how they can save money by moving to Linux, so more money can go to kids programs and teachers salaries.
Don't worry it will never pass. For those of you not in the US, here's how our political system works: someone tries to pass a law (doesn't matter if it's good or bad), if the law hurts big corporations (which this one probably will) they get together and spend lots of money on campaign contributions/marketing campaigns and the law gets voted down. This is actually a great way to get campaign contributions, just propose stupid laws that will hurt rich people.
No offense, but I'm really sick of hearing this argument. MS Office and Open Office are almost exactly the same for the basic functions. I think your argument only applies to not so smart people using advanced functions, which probably isn't that many. My guess would be is that if you replaced the MS Office icon with an Open Office icon 90% of the people would adjust very quickly, 9% of the people wouldn't even know they are running a different program, and 1% of the people might have a problem.
If there is an existing GPL or LGPL project then try to convince the client that extending/modifying the product is more efficient than you developing it from scratch. Of course if you get paid by the hour your kind of screwing yourself, but hopefully the client will appreciate your efficiency and hire you to do more work.
I think the only way for this to work is if their were are powerful programmers union that supported it. Otherwise as other posters have pointed out, you could just be fired and some person who really doesn't care about morals would do the work.
1) Invest %15 of your income.
2) Don't work for M$ solution providers. It's a shrinking market.
3) Don't work for companies so obviously full of crap.
4) Try to anticipate employer layoffs and get out before they happen.
5) If 1-4 fail, tell employer to go to hell, move to Hawaii and live on the beach. If you're going to be homeless I'd rather be there than Chicago!
I think until we create robots to do all our work so we can sit on our asses all day that their will still be programming work to do. Even then we'll still need to do programming to keep them from going psycho and killing us all.
I try to cope with this by doing meaningful side projects. Hopefully one them will pay off someday so I don't have to work for the man anymore! Here's some random ideas for you...
- write a video game with a positive message.
- create a web site that does something useful for society like linking schools and volunteer linux consultants to help them uninstall all their M$ crap and install linux, or linking car poolers together.
- try applying at non-profit organizations that share your views.
Hope this helps!
The Microsoft School Agreement seems like a clear antitrust violation. It seems like charging a school for each computer is similar to the way they used to charge OEM's based on the number of computers sold, regardless of the OS installed on it. It the same old trick of trying to illegally shut out the competition, only now it's cutting into teachers salaries and programs for kids. Thanks M$, what a wonderful company you are!

Could someone find out what these guys are smoking and send me some. Thanks!

Cool, someone should create a website showing all the countries that have converted to linux. I can't wait to see linux world domination!

The US government should fund all of China with MS software. Just think of how easy it would be to spy on them with all the security holes!

Probably towards useful stuff like drugs, hookers, porche's, etc. for record company execs.

The hard nipples and the half ripped off top of Amidala made it worth it! Three thumbs up!

Kick in another million and they'll throw in some decaying nuclear war-heads.

Yes, unfortunately that's the way it is. There are unions here, but most white-collar jobs aren't unionized. I wish I lived in Germany!

"There is no clear dividing line between where a particular block of "middleware" ends and the rest of the operating system begins," Gates said.
Maybe Gates should go back to being CEO instead of Chief Software Architect!
