    My honey and I had this discussion a while back, and for the sake of argument he took the 'wasted vote' approach. You explained it more eloquently than I could. (Lux, are ya reading this? ;-)

    As for technology being the cause of political disenchantment, that's bull. I would not be suprised if a disproportionate amount of the 'techno elite' are apathetic about politics when compared with the general public, but I really think that has more to do with the fact that most geeks are members of Gen X...and we know how jaded Gen Xers are... [including myself]

    Whether tech can be the catalyst for renewed political involvement, I don't know. I think it has the potential, if Congress and the Mega Corps don't legislate it to hell and back first.

    Granted, most folks are still using modems. I agree.

    Does anyone really think that casual modem surfers are the ones buying these products? If you're using Netzero and just discovering chatrooms for the first time, what's the likelihood that you're interested in an internet-ready toaster? These things are built for the rabid consumer of high-tech toys, AKA, Geeks. Geeks who know how to configure networks and don't care to subscribe to MSN for $19.95/month, thank you very much. Am I wrong? I really think the original poster has a point here...

    Funny I was just feeling nostalgic for my old Nintendo games yesterday... emulators and ROMs aside, there's just something about kicking back in the middle of the living room floor, instead of crouched in a computer chair, that made games more fun for me. I loved Dragon Warrior I-IV, Zelda, Kirby, etc... I have Earthbound 2 on my computer now but it's just not the same... *sigh*
    So whatever happened to the hokey RPGs?

    Possible impact? What sorts of research did you do (or could you have done) to help show that there is already a huge impact and that the laws as they are just won't jive with today's tech?

If it's a site I don't care to hear from, I don't give a real address, a real name, or anything else. yomama@myhouse.com works just fine, and I never see spam. (I think it gets routed to myhome.com, who are themselves an online retailer. Right back at ya!)

    Seriously though, why spend more dough if the one you have isn't broken? I'm tickled at this story but I'm not feeling too optimistic for some grand overnight switch to a new format. As for your analogy about CDs replacing tapes, uh-uh. Tapes can get eaten, quality goes downhill quick. CDs are much more stable in a physical sense. The difference between .mp3 and .ogg is not tangible in any sense and therefore isn't relevent.

    I'd been using MetaCreations Painter for image slicing forever and then was so excited that Adobe had finally built one - - until I used it. Ack. But I do have to give props to Photoshop 5.5's compression features (Save for Web). It's really pretty good, and about 50% of the time it's better than say, a Ulead Smartsaver filter.

    It's not about whether they want to share - if they released it in the past, they've 'shared' it with the world already. We're talking about old games and programs that the authors can't or won't support anymore. It's like saying you don't want your little sister to glue the eyes back on to the rag doll you threw out 3 years ago.
    I for one support abandonware - IF you're not making money off of it. Doing it in the Open Source spirit is perfectly fine, IMO.

    if you're talking about a regular putty-colored PC case, let me give you some tips. (I painted one for my then sys-admin a couple years ago.)

    1) Rough up the finish first. Sandpaper, rock tumbler grit, etc. ;-)
    2) Wash it off with water and dry it thoroughly.
    3) Spray paint, fabric paint, whatever you use, it needs to dry completely between coats, especially if you're going to be painting over the same area 2 or 3 times.
    4) When you're done give it a coat of spray sealant.
    5) And for crying out loud, if you paint the front, detatch ALL the buttons and lights first. (Boy what a mess I made...)

    I agree that the rise of Napster and its ilk was a big fat wake-up call for the RIAA. So they go down. (Or do they?) What is going to happen to the artists? While I'd like to be able to buy more CDs at lower prices, ultimately I fear that the musicians are going to be fscked more than before. Digital piracy is not going away. IMO, artists who embrace the web and make the record companies work for them instead of the other way around will have it good....

    But how easy is that going to be after the dust settles?

    Agreed, so why is it that all the tax breaks go to the folks with the most money?

    (OT: I dig Ayn Rand as an author, but not necessarily as a political figurehead.)
    As for the wealthy being 'responsible' for helping the poor, no way. It'd be NICE, certainly, but to say that because I have more cash than the average Joe I am also obligated to give some of it to the lady who lived in a shoe? That's ridiculous. At what point does someone become wealthy enough to have to donate, and who decides who gets the money? Again I ask, why do the richest of us get the biggest tax cuts? THAT's where the problem is, IMO. (For the record, I ain't rich.)
