    There is no such thing as a nerd who doesn't like the thought of sneaking through steam tunnels; this is just a fact of life.

    If you do not like reading about such things, perhaps you should stay away from Slashdot.

    I bet you're the person who always insists that grammer be correctly employed, aren't ya?

    I'm a MCSE. Before that I was a HP-Unix SysAdmin. I currently run Win2k, Mandrake 8, Win98se. I know of what I speak.

    Hand your typical Moron a Win2k install CD and a relatively non-freaky PC, and within 6 hours you will have someone playing solitaire. Hand the same user's twin a current Linux Distro and 6 hours later they will be staring in total uncomprehension at the screen. or calling me.

    That being said, Linux Rocks if you have the capability & inclination to learn something difficult.

    We should declare a moratorium on the usage of "3d" on any display technology that doesn't involve either a) providing seperate images to each eye, or b) Holotanks.

    On the other hand, I guess they should have called my 17" monitor 3D...it takes up width, breadth and depth on my desktop.

    Yup, yup, yup.

    I use Gnutella and Overnet to share some free 3D & Poser files I've created; I also do a lot of animations just for the heck of it that are not really something I want to include in my regular portfolio, so they get shared also.

    If I wanted to do any up or downloading of anything illegal, I would surely not use a service that reports exactly who I am to anyone who wants to know, when there are fine packages like Freenet freely available (something I also share on gnutella; I had the thought once or twice that countries that block Freenet installer downloads might NOT be able to block one of the gnutella clients....just doing my part for world freedom).

    There are many, many legitimate uses for P2P.

    ...and since the government's job is to protect us from each other...

    Just thought I would point out that it's not the governments job to protect us. It's not the Obligation of the police to protect us; If they fail to protect us in a home invasion situation, you can't sue them.

    As a Parent, it's MY job to protect my family; if I can get outside help. that is just fine. However, in order to provide the same degree of home protection my firearms do, it would require them to permanently station a cop in my house, something I'm not quite prepared to tolerate.

    Especially since I have the experience and training to nearly assure that any patrolman stationed in my home to protect me would be a step downward as far as overall safety is concerned.

    Perhaps not so slowly.
    My kids are continually getting lectures on what proper citizens do; this of course bears very little resemblance to what they see at home. My first inkling of how bad it was getting was when my daughter, who I've taken shooting before, asked why it was OK for us to have guns when her teachers all say they are bad.
    Grrrrr.

    In my experience, the smaller the code, the less likely it is to be poorly written.

    Which is fairly logical if you think about it; If it's small, and works, there is less room for mistakes.

    You ARE kidding, right? I still remember a demo I ran in my store, Win'95 vs Warp, with Warp running Doom AND X-wing at the same time.
    It wasn't until Win2k came along that MS had anything that could even begin to compete with warp.

    Ok, I'll lay this out in simple terms.
    1: Why do people have guns?
    A) To hunt
    B) For Self or Family Defense
    C) As a aspect of employment (cop, criminal, or soldier)

    2: What's this whole 2nd amendment thing?
    A study of the historical climate of the times, and reading of ANY literature from the period in which it was drafted, shows clearly, without a shadow of a doubt, that the 2nd amendment was intended as a check against a tyrannical government. it's really, really, clear.

    3: What about all the vilence / death / shootings, etc.
    It's part of being a human. violence will happen, no matter what you want or do. People are just like that, OK? It's just that unlike most parts of the world, as a US Citizen you have the ability to defend your family from violence in a effective fashion.

    Star Trek made me the person I am today...of course several people think I should hunt all people down responsible and kill them slowly because of that, but i'm of the opinion that things could have been much, much worse.

    A computer is the sum of it's parts.
    If you have a bad mboard, cheap, leaky RAM, a 1000RPM MFM(;))HD that is 98.3% fragmented, A Cyrix processor, A sound card that was gotten from a trade representative that isn't quite like anything else......
    You graphic card will make amazingly little difference.
    Of course, on identical systems, with differing Vids, you will get a difference in some graphics performance benchmarks.

    You can just get the abandonware version for PC; there are a few sites that have it up, including even the star map. Works great on multiboot OS/2, but then again, everything not expressly designed to be incompatible works great on OS/2.
