I designed, built and was getting ready to market a series of 5 1/4 enclosure boxes for the express purpose of destroying the 3.5" drive inside with a key switch.
You would positively NOT believe the, um, chill i soon felt.
Not Really. My experience with Main & Mid frames supports everything asserted in the article.
But...being a Mainframe operator means doing mindless, repetitive, boring tasks 99% of the time, because the hardware & software doesn't screw up. Then that 1% comes along...usually due to operator screwup, or just cosmic random crap, and you have to have someone there, or readily available, who actually understands the system. This is NOT something you want to outsource, or ship overseas, unless you ship the whole package overseas, of course. And I think very few Banks or public utilities would want to do that.
I used ISDN in Tennessee because a)I lived WAY out in the BoonDocks b)they had subsidized it, giving you in effect 2 phone lines and a 64k up/down connection for $35.
It's considerably faster than 56k/v90 whatever; the modem tech is really just 33.6 line speed with enhanced compression, AFAIK. But the 64k ISDN is 64k uncompressed, with compression adding to your speeds... Add to this the factor that you can only download stuff as fast as the other server uploads it, which means in most cases a 128k - 512k upload stream at best.
So ISDN is really cool, if it's not too expensive; don't trade in your 512k/512k or better xDSL, obviously, but it really competes with some of the lamer Cable or Satellite packages, and blows plain modems out of the water.
There has to be a Patriotic, red blooded, flag flying, American Citizen out there who will defend the Department of Justice? After all, 85% of americans support the current reich, um, I mean government! Don't tell me all the polls are (gasp) WRONG!?.
P.S. I'm a Disabled Gulf(1) Veteran. I earned the right to say whatever the fuck I want about the country.
1) I have a Jeep Wrangler. I've had it since 1995; it's the 3rd one i've owned.
2) It's considered a SUV, but it gets in excess of 30MPG.
3)I don't live in a City. I live some place with weather, and marginal roads.
4)On occasion, I go places that are even LESS city, and have even MORE marginal roads.
5) I would not object, whatsoever, to a hydrogen power plant, or similar technology, as long as I can reasonably USE it. I doubt very much anyone else would either.
Age of Wonders II was almost a update to MoM. but without the Random Map Generator (which they promised during development, then as a patch, but still haven't delivered), and the Civ style city building, it just sucks. Of course if there had never, ever, been a MoM. it would Rock.
I never tried any of the Bards Tail games; they any good? what is it, soft porn of some sort? Will they run in Virtual PC like MoM will?
We are about a year+ past needing something like this ourselves.
Unfortunately, this won't work for us, because NO PLACE would be safe for the central database server.
Our only options are freenet & things of a
like nature, which are decentralized.
On the other hand, you've got nothing to hide, aren't a terrorist, so you've nothing to fear, right?
right?
RIGHT, Citizen?
in times like these it's a good thing the founding fathers realized
that future governments wouldn't play by the rules.
Accuratepowder sells reloading supplies. gunpowder. Something any moron can make after a trip to the library. And it's not only legal, it's constitutionally protected, for now. as if that meant anything anymore.
It's really amazing to me that the question is even arising; take a look at
the archived project page for the Delta
Clipper ; this is such an obvious solution, low cost, high sustainability,
and it's really cool. Aside from the blowing
up thing, of course.
While they claim that the X-series
they are currently working on is just the latest incarnation, that's a bunch of
crap; the big contractor corps just don't like the idea of a cheap spacecraft.
It's either this or Prometheus;
anything else is just a temporary solution.
Well, Yeah. I'm a typical 40 year old rural raised North American; if someone is running around with a AK-47 shooting people and I'm armed, that someone is not going to be running around long. Shooting a running rabbit with a.22 is about the best markmanship training available.
As a direct followup to this, I doubt very seriously we are going to see many terrorist ground attacks involving projectile weapons in Rural N. America, except possibly in places where the government has made it illegal to carry.
Too bad it's illegal to make backups. What with the release of the KiSS DP-450 DVD player, which can play DivX 4&5, the backing up of DVD's would have been such a simple thing...
It would make one HELL of a prank gift; especially to those you aren't really intending to keep on the good side of. But I think I could see (without actually breaking out the physics texts) why this wouldn't scale up well; I think the chamber would have a pretty fixed maximum scale.
Calcium Carbide makes a great potato gun fuel; I can't think of anything I'd rather use. It's portable.
I doubt very seriously that we have to look any further than OverPeer for the origins of this attack; according to RedTeam, this has been going on in very localized spurts since Jan 5th. It would make sense to me this is a RIAA sponsered thing gone wrong.
As a longtime Tradewars, MOO, MOO II player, when I heard that there was a MOO III Alpha out, I had to go Spelunking in the dark recesses of the web.
Eventually, I stumbled across the Austrailian Alpha Release.
People, I love complicated; I used to buy up Every Traveller book and spend hours designing Spacecraft that were never used, just because it was neat; I wasn't even bothered by the bugs in MOO II, because the game was just so freacking cool.
The Alpha is from the pre-dumbed down version of the game; apparently, they decided the general public wouldn't appreciate it; I heartily agree.
If the Gold Version is 50% as complicated and in-depth as the Alpha, then this is going to be the cause of Many, Many, MANY divorces.

Not Really.

Sindarin, you Elitest!
Damn Faeries.
LoL! trying to convince people that that's a law! Next you'll be saying we have freedom of speech, or something else obviously ridiculous.

You can take away my crystal clear 0% lag CRT when you pry it from my cold dead hands.
I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would want a LCD for a desktop that's used for anything besides text.

That WOULD be cool, as I'm the one guy left on the planet who prefers not to play multiplayer games...
Except MOO2 and Steel Panthers, of course.
Yup, sounds like a real Cash Cow.
Hate to tell you this....
brace yourself...

Dude. Look around you.
The Constitution is now being used for toilet paper in the White House.
Our Glorious, Illustrious leaders will do whatever they want, whenever they want, to whomever they want.

My brother (The Evil Genius) always told me the only safe, sane way to store data over the long term is on punch cards.
Think about it.
...or freenet. It's major file trading app (FROST) is busted right now, but the web component works just fine.
Of course it is kinda hard to find the sites when there isn't a functioning search engine.

What's really amazing is that somehow The Prez has discovered oil exists on Mars!
It's the only possible explanation for him wanting to send an expeditionary force. Unless possible that's where Osama's been hiding?
I'm still waiting for Sim Mars.
