Geez man, are you going through male menopause or something ?
Share your point of view if you want, it'll be my pleasure to read your comments but don't come here to put some shit on my head....especially when we know that in the/. community, most irritating comments are made by 18 years old kiddos.
Despite the tone you used, you have point, the fact that they still get A LOT of money does not justify or make any less worst the act of pirating a movie.
But, in the end, it all comes back to what I said in an earlier post about the RIAA
intead of discouraging me to pirate, encourage me to buy.
gimme a reason to buy your product and I'll do it.
I feel sorry for the music/movie industry for the money they lose but its all about evolution. Internet is here and changes a lot of thing, those who cannot adapt will undoutedbly lose money...if not their skin.
Internet is about sharing, its about knowledge, information. That cannot, will not be stopped, anytime soon anyway so MPAA and RIAA might as well get used to it.
They need to change their business model. Like I said, its sad for them because its not the quality of their product or anything related to them that triggered the situation.
peer review has little to do with linux's (almost)top notch security.
Of course it helps, but its the fact that linux is built by geeks and for geeks, therefore, the average linux user can handle a higher level of complexity.
by making it more complex, you enable the system for a higher level of security as well.
The problem of windows is that MS wants to make it so simple that they can't control everything. A simple gui and cute buttons will never cut it for an impenetrable system (if there's such a thing).
Windows XP is meant for granny, daddy, mommy and their kiddies at home, those who have pic-nic on sundays, eat food that is comprised of something else than two buns and ground beef.
But you have a point, linux is known as more secure because it does not receive nearly as much attacks as windows does.
But linux *is* more secure than windows anyway, if it was to receive as much threats as windows, i just know it would react better because linux requires security and password everywhere. Even the way the hard drive works is more secure.
I've played with linux (mandrake, suse & gentoo) and some of them of actually quite nice.
and they prove my point, Suse & Mandrake are somewhat wanna-be windows and it shows! they're so insecure that they're just as dangerous as windows.
Gentoo on the other hand is good.
I'm not a very knowledgeable with linux, this is what I was able to understand from what I read on the web and also from what I tried while messing with the three.
so in the end, you are right, in saying that windows is more insecure because it receives more attacks but what makes it insecure first and foremost is its internal structure, its cute GUI and simplicity. its so simple that you can't control everything.
SuSE and mandrake have the same problem, they're on a linux platform alright but because they're too simple, they're just as insecure but giving too easily root access.
why "serving" them with emulators so that they dont need to port the games ("hey, linuxuser, dont whine, you got wineX")?
Computers aren't very different from anything really and no matter how much of a need there is for standard, there never will be really a standard.
Have you ever dreamed installing a big block hemi in your shiny WRX impreza or Ford Focus ?
If that's the case, keep dreaming, it'll never happen. Because chevy stuff are for chevys, ford stuff is for ford stuff. They're not compatible and there isn't a lot we can do to change it.
Computers, like I said, aren't very different. Don't try running windows programs directly in linux, you won't get very far (well...we all know that).
But! in computers we have the advantage of being able to change that somehow by creating "emulators".
Companies won't create a game for all possible platforms, it would cost way too much so they aim for the most popular ones - such as...dare i say....windows.
Linux isn't a profitable platform yet, because not enough people use it to profitably make programs for it, not to mention no company will be willing to release their game in an open source manner, because yes, it would inevitably come down to asking them to release their latest game in an open source because that's what Linux is all about.
And besides the whole "profitable" side of it, think of WineX as the bridge no other sector could create.
Think of it as the ultimate option given to the consumer to finally choose the game HE wants and play them on HIS platform no matter what the game is intended for.
To come back to my chevy/ford example. I doubt we'll ever see any kind of device to allow us to put a hemi engine in my ford impala. It's because cars are bound by mechanical pieces, physical pieces. There are space constraints, tons of fittings would be inserted everywhere.... not a very reliable technique.
Software on the other hand, is an abstract product, something you can't touch see or smell... or taste (?):D
We must use that advantage to build bridges that allow us to use what we want, on the platform we want, where we want.
I applaude WineX for their initiative and you be damn sure I'll buy their product once it is matured.
Well, I don't know about France and Germany but I don't think the states should be putted in the equation.
They're just not part of the equation yet, when they realize how much they lose in hard cold cash compared to those who made the switch, they'll follow. US, like any other country, are trying to lower their cost to make more money.
MS will just follow or die.
about that protectionism thing, its quite normal a country take a software made by its citizen, there are many good reasons for this.
As long as they don't slow down or block its distribution, i think its more like encouraging your own citizen than protecting your product. Heck, it may even help the citizen feel safer toward their governmental organization, have them feel they have a part to play.
Harry potter (and whoever his involved in the process) isn't the one that pays the price of piracy.
Big movies will always make money, less but still large enough to make one rich several times over.
Music is in the same boat. Madonna, Limp Bizkit, Garth Brooks, Metallica (name 'em) aren't THAT hurted by piracy. While I don't have records of their actual losses due to piracy, I'm damn well sure they still get some good dough for their albums.
Economics is a good teacher to teach us anything that involves money.
- The less you have, the more you pay -
(Ever noticed how huge companies evades all income taxes ? All ratio kept, the casual worker pays a lot more!)
If you're a good band, you just started out, piracy WILL hurt you. it will seriously hinder your means of producing a better product.
Same goes for movies, good movies rarely have a big budget, they can't afford that much marketing and any sale they lose digs them that much deeper in their grave.
I'm not saying we should never download any movies or albums. Download it to listen to it/ view it. If you like it and you think its t he kind of stuff you'll watch/listen to again, then buy it. (or make a donation to the band via paypal..:p)
What you say is very true and I'd probably be singing the same song if I was an enthusiastic console gamer.
But I'm not and whenever I'm asked, I'll keep preaching for PC.
You only have to worry about keeping your PC up-to-date if you're an enthusiastic PC Gamer who wants all the latest technology to play the latest game and beat his current High Score in 3D Benchmarks!!
On the other hand, some gamers are very comfortable with their PSX or even SNES. They dont care much about PS2 / XBOX because it their current hardware gives them exactly what they need.
Its all a matter of needs.
Personnally, gaming wise, I've made one spending this year, for an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128 meg, to replace my 4 years old Asus V6800 32 meg.
I figure that 4 year is pretty good for a video card.
And of course, let's keep apples and apples shall we ?
If you want to compare PC gaming with console gaming then compare what you spend precisely for your gaming in PC and what you spend for your gaming in console.
Yes, I did buy (I did!) windows XP, but that doesn't count, I wanted a more secure (?) and stable (?) OS. I didn't care about the enhanced perfs of XP for gaming.
Oh, yeah, I also upgraded to 2.4ghz HT, but I do a lot of multitasking and the 2.4 price's were down a lot.
Even if in the end it makes a spending of around say 1,500$ (hypothetically), you can't say I've spent all that on my gaming because there are much more things I do, like accounting, like development, like music listening, spreadsheets...etc.
If you want to compare the actual yearly cost of my PC vs Console, then you need to take the total spending and divide by the number of tasks you do with your PC.
Same for console....
There's a poster in this thread that same something very true; if its gaming you like (and only that) then buy a console.
But if gaming is not the only thing you like, then go for PC, it gives far more better options than console.
Two things constantly strikes me when I read about RIAA suing a group or doing this to discourage me.... or any action from RIAA really.
1. Instead of discouraging me from sharing my music, why don't they encourage me to buy. It comes down to the same end result and this way, I don't feel attacked.
2. Its all about evolution. History is a good teacher to prove us that if a company does not evolve, it will die. if you cannot understand / satisfy your clients, you will perish or be bought.
RIAA's model hasn't evolved from when RIAA was created at all. Back then, there was no internet, thus, the market was different.
Today, RIAA hasn't evolved one bit, they're still acting as though there was no internet, as though they had no opponent.
But they do have one opponent : Evolution. They need to update their business model so that they stop losing money when we share music.
As sad as it is for them, today, I can find most of the music I want on the internet, so why would I buy a CD ?
for two reasons:
1. I really like the band and I think they deserve some money 2. The CD offers me something I cannot get on the internet.
For instance, a local artist (Francois Pérusse - http://www.zeromusic.com/perusse/) includes a small membership card with every CD, that membership gives access to a protected section where you can listen to stuff not available on the market such as unreleased material
That's one reason why I would buy his CD..and I do.
Sadly, many companies today refuse to evolve, they refuse because it'll cost them money, they'll need to change.
What they do not seem to realize is that everyday they remain as they are is another day where they lose even more money trying to stop us...and in the end, they never do.
This is type of comments where I tell myself : Oh, hum...well, that's interesting.
But... don't you think that's overeacting ?
Did crime rate go insanely up (or down) with the popularity of GTA 1/2/3 ?
Does the fact that I like Unreal tournament makes me a serial killer (or even a potential one)
I understand all too well the point you are making but then I feel the urge to remind you not to put us all in the same basket.
There are some crazy twisted and retarded bastard on the face of this earth. This is a constant, not a variable, no matter how much of them dies of age, sickness, criminal act, the number remains globally unchanged.
There IS a tendancy to slightly raise depending on the country (the US and Canada namely) but we have A LOT more items to tackle to drop the criminality rate before getting to movies & games.
I means, for how long exactly have horror/action movies been around ? Quite some time right ? Even before they begin rating movies PG-13
yet...there were criminals before.
Heck, I've insanely played violent games ever since I'm a kid and if there's one lawful guy around, that would be me.
Try to put all the hype and fanfare aside, people scream at violent games & movies because right now, they're the target but they forget more important items such as.... education, if parent's weren't all doped, they'd probably take more time to raise their children correctly.
If those parents were less poor, they'd probably see more solution than take dope
If those parent had better education, they'd know better than to drop from school.
I'm running slightly off topic here, but I feel this is where you were going with the popularity of violent games like postal 2.
Oh...I played Thief's game and never broke in a house:)
Lindows isn't Gentoo, RedHat, SuSE or Mandrake (..well screw that last two:p) or any other Distro.
Lindows is Lindows, Linux equivalent to Windows and most promising replacement OS for the average joe who does not want to take control on the computer.
The average joe wants a safe computer on which he can send email, browse the net and play solitaire...Lindows can do that and in the mean time proves that Linux can be usable by the non-technical folks.
plus, it offers a nice transition between windows & linux, you begin to understand how it works but still behind the comfort of a gui, wizards....etc.
Then, when you are ready, you jump in the bigger stuff.
Truly your appear to be a linux user and that's great. We respect the fact that you know a lot of stuff and are very technical, but linux NEEDS distros like Lindows to gain popularity and popular support.
I agree with what you say, but, technically, buying a copy of a software / game doesn't allow you to do whatever you wish with your own copy.
Copying your own copy is arguably legal. Sharing your copy's copy is not (nor is sharing the original)... that's obvious..
But because of the involvement of "copying" one would want to read the EULA BEFORE buying to make sure the company allows us to copy it for "backup"
Because really, all they do is allow us to use a piece of their software for personal use for [x] amount of dollar. But they retain all rights regarding the copy. We are merely authorized to use it.
Same goes for modding a xbox / ps2, modifying a software. When you buy something they often mention that they remain with all copyrights no matter how much you modify from the original "patent".
I'm not going to go search on the net to make my point, that's not what I want to do. I'm merely suggesting that the lawyer isn't so wrong as you mention, maybe he's not 100% right but he wouldn't need so much digging before finding a piece of law / eula / contract that mentions that you cannot copy / share / modify their product.
Regarding the EULA vs Governement ruling... I'm not so sure the EULA has no power vs Govt. EULA is a contract, therefore, it binds you to it and forces you to abide by it.
By signing / clicking ok you authentified that you are ok with terms and you agree to respect them.
Government will state general behaviour, common laws, usage & rights, but in the end, if you decide to accept something, its your own decision and government can't come back and protect you from your own decision.
[joke] create a sniffer that keeps track of who actually respond or clicks any links in those darn spam email and fine them!
Anyone dumb enough to buy (as in buy and believe) their crap *deserve* such punishment:p
That'll cut their profit fast enough:)..or......have a law for the spammers to give me the emails of their buyers and I'll track them down myself!!...All in the name of law of course [/joke]
But are they linked with the robot with their mind having the robot mimicking their moves and speed (..even stamina) ?
Battle Bots and the likes are closer to RC Cars than the robot depicted in OMF IMO...but I'll admit that 300 years was more a figure of speech than an actual hypothesis based on reality:)
If you ask for games that are totally irrealistic yet, awfully addictive.
1. Jazz Jackrabbit 1/2 2. Earthworm Jim 3. One Must Fall 2097
Jazz Jackrabbit.
Need I to describe ?? A standard 2D platformer where you kill baddies with big guns. The fun I always had with that game was the humor that was in it, a small childish side to it, a rabbit with a gun, running like a lightning and jumping on turtles... not quite what I'd call realistic:) Even if you transform Jazz in a human, you end up with a Commander Keen...which isn't exactly your realistic game either:)
Earthworm Jim.
Same as Jazz I guess, very humoristic game, well thought, well done and since I don't see earthworms kicking my butt everyday, I thought it would fit well as an answer:)
One Must Fall 2097.
Now this one, as probably all/.'ers already know, is equally a classic as it is illogical.
I *never* got bored of this game, which is far more than I can say for many many games today. For some reason, I always loved this game and always will.
If you ask for real stuff, don't look there, Robots fighting each other using pilots linked to the robot... I mean...maybe in 300 years but NOT in 2097..:)
Of course, the "robot" theme was only used to be original compared to all the fighting games but when I look at the game overall, all is unrealistic...original and fun.
A last one I just thought of, "Stunt".
Remember that old car game ? This one ranks just as high as OMF:2097. If I could still play it, I would. (Actually...I can....just too lazy to dual boot or any other solution)
IMO, realism/simulation is one type of gaming, it reaches one type of audience.
Just as MMO has a tartet audience, or sports game, or pinball games, FPS...
It is nothing but one type of gaming, it will always have fans for it, the only reason it began in the 90s is because the developers realized there was a market for it (which also happens to be when the PC games really began to bloom)
I still buy CD regurlarly and do rip & download MP3s at will.
I buy CDs because the artist/band that made it deserves recognition (money) for its sweat.
Do I agree with RIAA....no, but we still need to prove them that sharing on the internet doesn't discourage us from buying real CDs, granted that the price is right.
What the RIAA need to understand is that in order to get us to buy the CD, they need to offer that little something we can't already find on the internet.
They need to understand that they need to change, they can't fight the internet (its sharing part of it anyway), instead, why can't we convince them to embrace the change.
An example? There's a local artist here, a humorist who gets his CDs ripped very quickly simply because he's very popular, so to motivate us into buying his stuff, with every CDs he gives a mini membership cards that allows us to download stuff from his website, things like videos, making-of, unreleased material...etc.
This is what I'd like RIAA to do but if I don't show them that I'm willing to buy their stuff in the first place, how can they be motivated to give me extra stuff ?
about 50% of my music collection are legit CD, that's about 250 CDs.
they couldn't offer their latest full-featured car so they downgraded it to the mini so that we could buy right now and then later see what WE COULD have had if we waited...:P
at least I'm not the one trying to convince myself I'm a man by smacktalking and using a 50 words dictionnary in which there are 25 synonyms of Dick.
Feverishly monitoring thread ?? What is it that you're doing then ?? you answer just as fast as I do.
I know I'm not being very adult to answer but I just hate when immature folks like you just bust in here and start bitching my country and culture.
Frickin' asshole, why don't you start by logging in and show some guts instead of hiding and being unable to weight the consequences of your own words.
Reply or not, I'm not going to reply after that, I've already crossed the line 3 times by playing your game.
>>The vocabulary in French sucks shit. It is like, lets know English, but use a language with less vocabulary to piss everyone off and make this more ambiguous and harder to say
Well...U.S. english ain't exactly that good either compared to real english from UK. And if you ask me, I'd compare my french to a texan english.
>>French frogs don't even have good wine and cheese like the real French.
Like we care about wine & cheese the socio-democrats like so much.
>>The socialist system is a huge burden on companies and innocent people, those who don't give a shit about subsidizing terrorists and just need to feed the family
Yeah, like you know what the Socialist system is, I wonder if you even know what it means or if its just a word you learned from mommy in an overheard discussion with grown-ups
>>French frogs are fucking idiots...and apparently we're doing it very well because the U.S. chicks I see from time to time don't seem to be complaining. We're they your Ex?
>>You self important asshole socialists
Oh yeah, and god knows we're the ones taking ourselves very seriously here heh ?
>>The French frogs are losers, bathe less on average, have lower literacy rates, are lazy, stupid, and smell
Yeah, we do get our of our pond from time to time to teach your a thing or two about literacy. Heh, I'm not even english and I just know I'd beat you in any writing contest.....and then US folks gets pissed off because Canada doesn't want to associate itself with the US....and they don't understand why...... *sigh*
There's way too many of you not even trying to consider Canada/Quebec as an equal, you're way too busy promoting your own ego while electing asses like Bush who rules the world by the force of his army instead of using its brain once in a while.
The hell do you know about french canadian's situation ???
Nothing I would guess because most french canadians playing games know english enough to play games in english and prefer it that way.
Now blame our government if you want but don't put us all in the same bag.
Besides....asise using that as a lame excuse to post a lame comment, why do you care about that ? you don't live in Quebec apparently so you're not even affected by that.
As far as I know, you're not the one who's gonna have to shop on the internet instead of going to the store to get the game you want.
Geez man, are you going through male menopause or something ?

:)
:
aka petty talk ?
You're guessing right, yet, you fall in your own trap for your post is also a generalization
- doesn't bring anything new/fresh
- merely remind of what we already know
- opens the way for more discussion
hehe, we're in the infite loop of human interaction, that's just the nature of things

lauch ahead as much as you want, when the next console comes out, if its better than yours, your console will die.
MS would be well advised no too rush too much or it will again lose money and be forced to lower prices below cost just to keep up (if that's enough)

But they do have one opponent : Evolution. They need to update their business model so that they stop losing money when we share music.
As sad as it is for them, today, I can find most of the music I want on the internet, so why would I buy a CD ?
for two reasons
1. I really like the band and I think they deserve some money
Just my 2c.
This is type of comments where I tell myself : Oh, hum...well, that's interesting.
:)
But... don't you think that's overeacting ?
Oh...I played Thief's game and never broke in a house
i think the poster meant more to point there were no linux version and that sucks :)
Who hasn't complained about how mindless movies are (any hollywood movie anyway)
....)
...etc (and the list could go on & on)
...etc
... Rocky, Rambo, Terminator 1(2nd is slighty better)
That doesn't stop them from making gazillion of dollars
and let's face it, gaming industry is becoming more and more like movies.
Gaming has its stars (Lara Croft, Jet Li, Tony Hawk
Gaming has budget
Gaming has popularity
Gaming has visibility
all like movies
Gaming for the masses means dumb shallow games
Gaming for the gamers means good deep games
very much like a movie
Good classic stereotypical shallow movie = Top Gun, Ghost (bleh), Collateral Damage, Minority Report
Good deep movie : Ex.: Schindler's List, Run Lola Run, Pi
If you like the movies like Lords of the Ring, Matrix, Star Wars
then you also gotta like games where women are incorrectly portrayed or any misrepresentation of reality.
because in the end, they're run by the same shop/consortium
With all due respect sir,
:p) or any other Distro.
I personnaly think that Lindows is good.
Lindows isn't Gentoo, RedHat, SuSE or Mandrake (..well screw that last two
Lindows is Lindows, Linux equivalent to Windows and most promising replacement OS for the average joe who does not want to take control on the computer.
Well.... that's arguable.
..
... I'm not so sure the EULA has no power vs Govt. EULA is a contract, therefore, it binds you to it and forces you to abide by it.
I agree with what you say, but, technically, buying a copy of a software / game doesn't allow you to do whatever you wish with your own copy.
Copying your own copy is arguably legal. Sharing your copy's copy is not (nor is sharing the original)... that's obvious
Regarding the EULA vs Governement ruling
By signing / clicking ok you authentified that you are ok with terms and you agree to respect them.
Government will state general behaviour, common laws, usage & rights, but in the end, if you decide to accept something, its your own decision and government can't come back and protect you from your own decision.
[joke]
:p
:) ..or......have a law for the spammers to give me the emails of their buyers and I'll track them down myself!! ...All in the name of law of course
create a sniffer that keeps track of who actually respond or clicks any links in those darn spam email and fine them!
Anyone dumb enough to buy (as in buy and believe) their crap *deserve* such punishment
That'll cut their profit fast enough
[/joke]
'nuf said.
Battle Bots, Robot Wars, of course,
..but I'll admit that 300 years was more a figure of speech than an actual hypothesis based on reality :)
But are they linked with the robot with their mind having the robot mimicking their moves and speed (..even stamina) ?
Battle Bots and the likes are closer to RC Cars than the robot depicted in OMF IMO.
If you ask for games that are totally irrealistic yet, awfully addictive.
... not quite what I'd call realistic :) Even if you transform Jazz in a human, you end up with a Commander Keen...which isn't exactly your realistic game either :)
:)
/.'ers already know, is equally a classic as it is illogical.
.. :)
1. Jazz Jackrabbit 1/2
2. Earthworm Jim
3. One Must Fall 2097
Jazz Jackrabbit.
Need I to describe ?? A standard 2D platformer where you kill baddies with big guns. The fun I always had with that game was the humor that was in it, a small childish side to it, a rabbit with a gun, running like a lightning and jumping on turtles
Earthworm Jim.
Same as Jazz I guess, very humoristic game, well thought, well done and since I don't see earthworms kicking my butt everyday, I thought it would fit well as an answer
One Must Fall 2097.
Now this one, as probably all
I *never* got bored of this game, which is far more than I can say for many many games today. For some reason, I always loved this game and always will.
If you ask for real stuff, don't look there, Robots fighting each other using pilots linked to the robot... I mean...maybe in 300 years but NOT in 2097
Of course, the "robot" theme was only used to be original compared to all the fighting games but when I look at the game overall, all is unrealistic...original and fun.
That is why I keep and will keep buying CDs.
I'm surprised, I have not read any comments about the cop losing his temper in the first place.
I mean...those supposedly well trained, patient and skilled are actually losing patience over a frickin' xbox ?? rofl.
Let's not put the eggs in the same basket..but this guy should take a day off or two.
Actually...Sony is just copying what BMW did,
:P
they couldn't offer their latest full-featured car so they downgraded it to the mini so that we could buy right now and then later see what WE COULD have had if we waited...
WTF, look at you,
at least I'm not the one trying to convince myself I'm a man by smacktalking and using a 50 words dictionnary in which there are 25 synonyms of Dick.
Amen to that,
:)
actually, I should've acted the way you did instead of taking the bait but it was too tempting
>>The vocabulary in French sucks shit. It is like, lets know English, but use a language with less vocabulary to piss everyone off and make this more ambiguous and harder to say
...and apparently we're doing it very well because the U.S. chicks I see from time to time don't seem to be complaining. We're they your Ex?
....and then US folks gets pissed off because Canada doesn't want to associate itself with the US....and they don't understand why...... *sigh*
Well...U.S. english ain't exactly that good either compared to real english from UK.
>>French frogs are fucking idiots
>>You self important asshole socialists
Oh yeah, and god knows we're the ones taking ourselves very seriously here heh ?
>>The French frogs are losers, bathe less on average, have lower literacy rates, are lazy, stupid, and smell
Yeah, we do get our of our pond from time to time to teach your a thing or two about literacy. Heh, I'm not even english and I just know I'd beat you in any writing contest.
