"there are many young people that can create their own employment through [the use] of free software" - so what will they be doing then - working for the government or something else?
Broadband has yet to take off in the U.K. Hopefully by the time it does companies will have stopped tactics like this. At the moment I don't know of any broadband provider in the U.K. that does this - if they did they'd soon find themselves with very few customers.
When they drained the pool under the rollercoaster at Blackpool's Pleasure Beach they found forty seven pairs of false teeth. People had screamed on the roller coaster and lost their false teeth!
Skills also required to be a politician: being able to not answer questions in an entertaining way while managing to make people think you have, giving speeches that people like whilst not actually stating an opinion or making any promises and ability to get corporate sponsors.
The person asking was from the UK where we have a surplus of computer science graduates. Where I live Pentra is employing them (if they've been unemployed for six months) as tech support in local libraries. Cisco qualifications are extrememly hard to get in the U.K. .
Networking will take off in a big way when FFXI is released - it'll probably even spur people on to buy the necessary modem. Unless the X-Box gets some high-profile games like this it'll die a slow death in the networked games market.
It was nothing to do with slavery in the 1800s. It was supposed to be questioning whether our genes determine our destiny or whether we control our own fate.

It's about time somebody gave the Americans some competition in space exploration. The next big thing will be a manned mission to Mars though. A Moon colony - however technically difficult that is won't grab the public as much as a misson to Mars (without the robots this time). Lets home they work out whether they're working in inches or centimetres this time!
"Microsoft Press also publishes a magnificent book called "Writing Secure Code""
Oh the irony of it all - I suppose the second in the series is entitled "Writing a Secure OS" or "Writing an OS for Dummies"
I remember I built a table myself out of three pieces of very flimsy 9mm MDF. It supported the weight of a 14" TV for years! A table would've cost about 6 times the cost. Which just goes to show that the table can be a terrible table (I can't even saw straight or hammer a nail in straight) but still do its job.
In related news a Chinese website offering mp3s of all the top 100 singles in the American charts has popped up - much to the annoyance of the two mentioned above.
With the inherent limits imposed upon the current silicon chips, gallium arsenide being so far impractical & expensive it seems nanotechnology is the only way to go if we are going to get faster computers. The Japenese high-tech companies realised this ages ago and ploughed the profits made from silicon chips into nanotechnology research. Now it's finally showing some results.
I've walked and cycled a total of six miles on Friday/ Saturday - didn't see one poster on a bus shelter or anything to do with it. I read the newspapers but haven't seen anything to do with it.
Prehaps I just live in the Twilight Zone part of the U.K. - a bit like Eerie, Indiana - totally cut off from the rest of the world.

Such is life, people always want things both ways. I think they'd have a better time going after some of the big spammers. However they deliberately try to make tracking them down difficult - so they go after the easy target instead.
And before anyone takes the above seriously it's meant as a joke (although it hasn't been modded as such).

Most data on the web isn't current anyway.

News so good it deserves to be told twice (but in a slightly different way of course) - where have I heard that before - yes - politics!
I'd buy slashdot. :o)

Not every /.er reads every story anyway - so even if it is a repeat it'll be new to some of us.

For any Dilbert fans who don't know the comics are online try here. That page has today's comic and links to the last month of Dilbert too.
The entertainment industry will be pleased!

One wonders how much Microsoft makes out of each game's licence if they can afford to take such a loss on each box at the new price.
