I hope this is a troll. You can't put down our soldiers just because they do the bidding of the politicians. They are just doing their job. They are to be respected for being there for their country when called upon. If you don't like the war, don't insult the military, bitch about your politicians. I wish people like you would be drafted as an Operation Human shield so stupidity like your's would be the first to die at the front lines.
If you run redhat 8, that horrible horrible linux distro, i'm not even going to get into how horrible it is, you can get xine with DVD support installed in 3 cryptic commands (after downloading assloads of associated package(s)):
See, it sucks cuz you have to install like these *two* new package managers. What were these fuckwads thinking? Then, like, xine sucks because it has one of those borderless window thingies without a title bar. Morons
Then, when its finally installed after the arduous installation process, you only get like mpg, divx, dvd, quicktime (w/plugin for sorenson), and all these other gay ass formats that no one ever uses.
I'm probably going to get a Mac because etc, etc, video for linux really sucks, etc, etc.
Knowing what tires are on my car is a far cry in comparison to airing my personal information through a plastic baggie. People, please get a clue. Yes, i do care for privacy. I don't want the 8 dollar an hour postman getting my SSN or my banking information through a plastic baggie, that is why I use those security envelopes. However, I could give a shit if a tire company knows that i have their tires on my car.
The thing about slashdotters is that many of you see in black and white. There is no gray. If I accept this chip in my tire, that must mean that I have no regard for privacy whatsoever and that I would be interested in your afformentioned offer of plastic baggies. NEWSFLASH::Well guess what, there is a gray area!::NEWSFLASH I love my privacy. I cherish my privacy. I love the fact that I can go home, get laid, drink a beer, and watch my semi-right-winged evening news (O'Reilly Factor and Hannity and Colmes!!!) without anyone looking, caring, or questioning me. But to get nervous about an itty-bitty microchip in my tire is just ridiculous.
What I am trying to say is this: There are some areas of privacy that I am concerned about such as mail transactions, credit card numbers, my SSN (for credit purposes), my banking information, and how much I get paid at my job. However I don't care about a company or a government having knowlegde of my particular car or the tires that are on it. If i have to worry about that, I must be doing something shady and probably deserve to get caught.
Put down your copy of 1984 for just a minute and come back to the reality that no one cares unless you are doing something illegal.
Get a grip. They are just putting a damn chip in your tire. Who cares? So what if "they" know that I have Michelin tires on my Toyota. I couldn't care less. What are they going to do with that information? Track me down? Harass my family? I seriously doubt it./.'ers need to quit bitching about this shit. If you don't want the stuff in your tires, don't buy them. Despite all of the rampant anti-americanism that plagues the forums of/., you still have a damned choice (tires, country to go live in). At least be thankful for that if you can't be thankful for anything else.
WOW. That royally sucks. I guess i am fortunate to live in florida with gsm. I heard AT&T may bring that to texas soon. If they do, I recommend them over cingular.
I live in the states (specifically Florida) and I get text messaging for free, send AND receive. The plan is only 39.99 a month with 600 Anytime minutes and 3000 night and weekends on the GSM network. Talk to AT&T.
Sounds like id and other game companies are looking to recruit well-trained pee-ons to make their maps and color their textures. A true game programmer would have to have good working knowledge of mathematics and physics, not to mention the extensive computer science back ground. I wonder if this "major" will have that?
you know what's funny? They really didn't fix the fonts for open office. They simply changed the UI font size (tools->options->view->scale) from 100% to 110%. It seems to fix it on every other linux box i have used. If you have redhat 8, set the font scale to 100 and see how shitty it used to look:)
Me, my boss, the new guy, and some other dudes left work at 11 to go see the first showing at the local theater (boss covered us). Absolutely bad ass. Legolas is by far the baddest character in the movie, sticking arrows in peoples eyes and shit. Just all around, a bad ass movie.
So, fuck the MPAA. If they profit off my enjoyment, tough.
I dislike making parents pay for the crimes of idiot teenagers, but in this case the mother was as idiotic as the daughter.
I always say that it is the parents' responsibility to mind the actions of their children. If their child does something as stupid as this, then it must be the parents fault at some underlying point. It may not be a direct fault, but it is the fault of the parent none the less.
Unless the child has some sort of emotional / behavioral disorder, then responsibility rests souly with the parents. I know this is a teenager in this case and I believe she should be severely punished, but the parents must be dealt with as well.
that think this is the last trek movie, I cought an interview with Brent Spiner on MTV last night. He stated that if this movie didn't make money, it would be the last. If it does, then they will be back yet again. Just thought I would state that.
I'd also hardly say that Mozilla is my flavor-of the week browser considering I have been using it for almost two years. And no, if I cannot access my bank's online services for some odd-ball reason (i.e. my browser isn't supported), then I think it's time to find a bank that does simply because a bank that supports all browsers shows that it is out for its customers when it caters to their needs.
I'd hardly call Mozilla an odd-ball product considering many, many sites have already made changes to accomodate it and the very similar Netscape 6.x 7.x series. My bank, Bank of America, somehow found it useful to make its online banking site Mozilla compatible. Maybe said parent post should consider a different bank if Online Banking is so important to him.
When the time comes, teach them. I am tired of this let-children-see/do/say-as-they-please mentality that is quite frankly, fucking up the next generation of kids that are popping out. I don't know about you, but have you noticed they aren't particularly bright anymore?
Children like to participate and be a part of adult things even though they aren't adults. This is what worries me about my child learning about certain things too early. It was very recently that a little kindergarten girl was caught giving oral sex to one of her classmates somewhere out west. Granted she learned it from being abused by her father, but how would you feel if this type of behavior proliferated and your child was caught in the middle. I know the people of slashdot believe heavily in the freedom of information. However, children should have limited freedom when it comes to certain information. They are on a need-to-know basis and quite frankly, they don't need to know... yet.
Nope. They could just ask me to let them into a site they want to get to. If i find it appropriate, I would let them on. That is being a responsible parent.
Wow, that's really messed up. The fact that you would LET your child inadvertently stumble across pornographic material, under the assumption(1) that they would ignore it, while you are probably more than capable of blocking it, is just terrifying. Maybe I don't want MY kid learning it from your kid. Have you ever thought of that? I would be the parent that would be calling you during dinner because my 8 year old son was repeating something that your child said. Let me tell you something, there is an age for everything. You need to be 16 to drive, 18 to vote and 21 to drink in most places in the USA. I can't quite put an age limit on sex ed, but 8 is ridiculous. 11 or twelve is probably a good age to learn the basics.
Would you let your child watch R-rated horror movies when they are 6, 7 or 8 years old? I know a couple kids that were exposed to things way too soon and are really fscked up right now. They can thank their parents later in life and your children can thank you too.
I knew what sex was, and how it worked, and why people were so interrested in it young enough that I can't possibly remember being told specifically. That made me an accepting adult who is not completely fscked up with what is arguably the principal function of a living being.
What does learning early have to do with being accepting? Nothing. I learned about sex a little later than most. I was kept away from those movies and shows that were laced and laden with it. I am very accepting of people of different orientation, etc. Your point in this regard is moot.
(1) Assumption - N - def - Mother of all fuck-ups - deriv. - V - assume
You'd simply be an asshole if you did and your site would probably be shut down. I think it's great that there will be a domain for children's web sites. It will make parents' jobs easier when it comes to keeping track of what they are doing and making sure they do not come across things they shouldn't.
I don't necessarily believe that. Think of it like an onion: do you start out at the very core of the onion or do you peel it off, layer by layer? I started out with the GUI and slowly learned the inners of Linux. It worked much faster this way, still being able to do useful stuff through the point and click interface while following a natural learning curve that is involved in immersing yourself in the shell.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I started linux from the GUI (a copy of redhat 6.1). Within a couple of years, I was banging out shell scripts and perl scripts with the best of em. I say learn the way you feel most comfortable with, but most importantly, just learn.
I hope this is a troll. You can't put down our soldiers just because they do the bidding of the politicians. They are just doing their job. By the way, GO BUCS!!!!

I must have forgotten to preview... oh well.

They haven't lost their vision, they've just got married. Read the post. BTW, congrats to Taco!

Blackholes are nature's 'divide by zero exception'
The real question: Is it possible to 'catch' this exception?
Nope. They could just ask me to let them into a site they want to get to. If i find it appropriate, I would let them on. That is being a responsible parent.
