we can just switch to slackware and remove what little system V shit is on there. Doesn't slack use the BSD style stuff? I see this SCO venture failing. If it succeeds, my slackware box will be unaffected.
That really sucks for people that buy CDs from artists that DONT include their lyrics (I can think of quite a few). A lot of those artists, on top of that, don't even sing clearly. You end up with a CD where you never actually know what the fuck the guy is saying.
"La nah rah now, itzch me anus, here we are now, entertain us."
With out actually looking up Teen Spirit, how many of you would have actually figured out that first part?
I picked up a dell inspiron LAPTOP with an NVIDIA GeForce 4go, 15" lcd, 512 MB DDR, and a 1.6 GHZ celeron on the cheap. I've got RH9 on it and it rocks. This thing plays games much faster than my 1.4 ghz athlon system... I shit you not. I can run q3, rtcw, ut, ut2003,etc,etc,etc all at 1024x768 @ +40 fps (well, quake 3 + rtcw run much faster than that;). I will admit that it probably has something to do with the GFX card. Maybe an equiv AMD would be a faster choice, but for the price that I got this thing for ($850 usd), I think I got a sweet deal.
I have owned a couple of Celeron based systems including this one. The advantages include less heat (this laptop runs at sub-arctic temperatures, lol), battery life is in excess of 3 hours, and for the price, the performance is more than what I need. As an added bonus, the thing runs all of my pr0n DVDs without a hickup:-D
Haven't linux distros been using SysV-style stuff since BEFORE 1995, you know, when SCO got the rights to UNIX from Novell? It's not their code in SysV anyway. It has all been rewritten to "act" like SysV. Plus, if they technically "own" UNIX, could they not sue because the entire base for Linux distros "mimics" the UNIX environment?
I dunno, I see this lawsuit as baseless. It is being done by a company that is going under and is merely an attempt at reaching the surface of the water for one last breath of air.
Besides the fact that they need better security for this thing, it is a great idea. I was a high school student not too long ago and my parents watched me like a hawk for my first year or two. They let up on me when I demonstrated my responsibility to them by consistently bringing home good grades. This is exactly what will happen to students that perform well. Students that do not perform well or choose not to perform well, need to be closely minded. I know that the predominating high-school mentality is all about individualism and privacy (well, we can debate the individualism), but some bounderies have to be made. You can blame the school systems, you can blame the teachers, you can blame society, but the true root of most teenaged problems today is a lack of parental involvement. Their is no escaping this truth. I believe that a system like this will encourage parents to play a more active role in the education of their children. I also believe that many parents feel that their hands are tied down by the school system, worryied that scolding their children for misbehavior can be construed as "emotional abuse" or that consistently tracking their students progress may be viewed by the school counselor as "invasive" and "counter productive". This system may be one of the first steps in empowering parents to once again, take charge when it comes to the lives and education of their children.
Ditto. I had an HP LaserJet 4L that I picked up off hand from my IT job in a manufacturing environment. This printer was the main printer for 15 shop floor terminals. It has seen 3 major infrastructure upgrades (from the old AS/400 terminals to the newer HP Vectra shop floor PCs to the new Micron shop floor PCs) over a span of at least 8 years. The printer was given to me because no one wanted it. Its been in service since the printer was the latest and greatest model (what was that, like 93 or so?) and worked for me in college for another two years (printing another 50-60 thousand pages) on research papers, one of my thesis, and a crap load of all sorts of various online sales receipts. Unfortunately, I had to depart from my beloved 4L in favor of the kick ass PSC 750. I needed the scanner/copier and the color support it offered. I picked it up for 150 bucks and found that hpoj has written a linux driver set that supports not only the printer through cups, but the scanner through sane as well. All I can say is that the 4L was the baddest printer ever produced and has lasted longer than anything that I have used.
first, watch your italics. I almost missed your comment. second, its not an issue because I USE synaptic. read my post. if i were as arrogant as you'd like to make me out, then why would i make a "deragotory" statement against myself? okay, okay. to clear this up, let me make perfectly clear that I hold no ill will towards the n00bs for I was once one myself, as were all of you. secondly, i apologize if my post came across as pompous or conceited towards the n00bs. n00bs are the future of linux so i should make it a point not to try and run them off. so let me rephrase:
Synaptic is a bad ass front end for n00bs and experts alike who are looking for a nice, easy to use, point-n-click gui for apt.
13... no. work in sales... no. looks like you're batting a 1000 today, buddy. And what's wrong with calling it gay? Is it not PC enough for you? Well too bad, i'm sorry. I really am. But a rant is a rant is a rant and I can say what I want. Obviously the moderators didn't mind my slight deviation;)
dude, remove the proverbial stick from your ass. i'm definitely not a n00b, yet I use synaptic because it rocks. don't make an issue out of a non-issue.
I have been playing with some of the new features in redhat 9, one of those features being that CD burning deal built into nautilus. That is a really cool feature, drop-n-drag files and click burn. I also like the additional eye-candy with the custom mouse cursors. They have greatly improved the menu system so you don't have that gay extras menu anymore. The greatest added feature of all is the increase in performance. On both of my dells, performance has increased at least 4 fold with regards to the UI. A suggestion to you all who bitch about dependency hell: download apt-rpm for RedHat 9. Its at http://shrike.freshrpms.net. Then, apt get update && apt-get install synaptic. Synaptic is a bad ass front end for n00bs who want a nice point-n-click gui for apt. Once installed, you can quit bitching about your mp3 support and lack of a dvd player since all those packages are located on the freshrpm's apt repository.
If you went to a university and studied in a computer science or computer engineering curriculum (this means that you have studied at least 3 semesters of calculus, 2 or 3 semesters of physics with lab, taken a semester of algorithms, data structures, linear algebra, and a plethora of other mathematics related courses, not to mention your programming courses) then you are an Engineer. This is because a university graduate with the degree in CS/CE/EE has the background to truly apply math, physics and engineering principles AT an engineering level. Some 16 yr old from the local high school that knows how to do VB or Java doesn't even posses a thimble of the knowledge of a true engineer. That is why you see your 16 yr olds coding perl scipts for a web site form processor and your true engineer getting paid 10 times as much and busting out with apps that the 16 yr old probably couldn't even operate.
So I believe if you have your degree in CS/EE/CE or even Mathematics, and you are a developer, then you have earned the right to be called an engineer. The 16 yr old has a long ass way to go.
seems fishy to me that the aussies got word of this even before the US media... of course, with the US media too wrapped up with ratings over the war, i may have to turn to french, german, british, or aussie news just to get the fucking local news over here.
Dude, I was pullin' down nearly a meg and a half a second -- and I'm only payin' $4k a year. Sorry to rain on your parade, but I think you're bein' over charged.;-)
And another thing. Wasnt it france that threatend potential members of the EU, you know, the ones that were in support of military action, with denial of admission for expressing their views? I think he said something along the lines of "These countries missed a good chance to shut up." Sounds like a country with the will and desire of its neighbors kept closely at heart.
um, the united states has always done business that way. what, do you think we go out of our way for military action without an incentive or providing one? Please, of course the turks are going to want an incentive for allowing us to stage a second front from their territory. Its only normal. With their horrible economic state and other problems they are having, of course they are going to want money from us.
Unfortuinatly that still wont work.... you need about 1000 war heads to alter the course significiant.
However, due to the advancements in nuclear technology since the last great Hydrogen bomb was built in the 1960s (You know that 60 Megaton one that the soviets made), I'm sure we could slap together a device that could kick out in excess of 800-1000 megatons by now, hence just enough to do what you are suggesting.
Sorry, i should have shifted into my uppidy, arrogant, know-it-all grammar gear before I posted. It might help me in the future when communicating with sophisticated fucks like yourself.
the fucking wall. First, let me point out: Yes, I am white but by no fucking means a christian (and what is your point with that anyway), my background is white middle-class, however I now make 10,000 dollars a year because I told my parents to keep their money while I pay for my college education. It's people like me that hold my own that don't pick up after these far left view points like yourselves. Yeah, I am conservative, but that doesn't make me a christian, a high-schooler, or some fucking prissy upper-class punk ass. Why don't you take your skewed psycho-analysis and shove it straight up your ass. I am proud that you served your country in the gulf war, but that does not give you the right to spout bullshit from your mouth, about someone you don't know, without a reprisal. I'm in college... are you shocked??? You thought the system would have already molded my impressionable young mind into an upstanding liberal by now, right??? I hate to break it to you, it is just not working out that way these days. And how the fuck do you know what knowledge I am lacking? I probably know more about Hoover and his shady-ness with the FBI than you know about the crust that is forming on your ill-kept ass crack. All I can say is Assumption... assumption my friend. And you know what I am refering to. About Tim McVeigh, 80% of the fucking population in america is white christian. How would you expect the govt. to spy on that?
A) Foreign Nationals are not US citizens and are therefore not afforded the same rights.
B) If you don't ever know that your phone line was tapped, then what do you care?
C) Pardon my logic flaws regarding the jail and posting on slashdot. Shoulda saw that coming.
civil liberties have we given up? I can still do the same shit I was doing even before bush was in office or even before Patriot. The DMCA was put in BEFORE bush and even that hasn't affected my life. How has any of this affected you? Have any of YOU been wire tapped lately? Have any of YOU had your homes searched for no reason? Have any of YOU been hauled off to jail out of the blue? Have any of YOU had your book collection thrown out in the street and burned with everyone elses? Have any of you been shipped to a death camp in a car with 100 others, crying, screaming and wallowing in your own feces as well as the feces of others?I didn't think so. I think/. is over-dramatizing these Patriot laws that get passed. The day that ANY of these things happens to someone that is NOT an extremely shady character to begin with, is the day you can bitch. But as far as I can tell, none of these laws have impeded on a single civil liberty since their inception. If you can think of something I could do before Patriot that I cannot do now, please, please post.
I use mozilla, so I really can't speak for opera. What I can say is this: I'll be sticking to my free 'bloatware' until A) It's no longer developed B) I am forced at gunpoint to run a piece of shitty software that I have to pay for.
we can just switch to slackware and remove what little system V shit is on there. Doesn't slack use the BSD style stuff? I see this SCO venture failing. If it succeeds, my slackware box will be unaffected.

CELL PHONES COOK YOU FOR DINNER (with microwave radiation)... oh wait, they do that here in the states too... ~:-\
