  1. Re:I've seen something like this before on Professional Gaming League Raises $10M · · Score: 1
Its like trying to convince a Yankees fan or Red Socks fan to support their local single A baseball team.

No. It isn't. I love baseball and enjoy watching it played on all levels. Just this past summer I watched quite a few games in the Babe Ruth league finals at Adams field in Quincy MA.
I've watched wiffle ball and stick ball with ammusement too. Of course, I'd rather be playing than watching, but my point is, to some people, baseball is a beautiful game with layers of competition and unique balance and perspective (for example - name another sport where the 'defense' is in possesion of the ball). I live close to Fenway Park, but often go to Pawtucket or the Independent League's Brockton Rox to catch a game. The skill at which the game is played is secondary. The game itself is a thing of beauty.

My problem with soccer is not the skill (or lack thereof) at which the game is played. It is the game itself. B.O.R.I.N.G. I've played soccer as a kid and have been to a few Revolution games (New England's MLS representative). I was 5 minutes late to one game and missed the only goal scored that night. I've seen games on TV end in a zero - zero tie. I'm sure there are elements of strategy or whatever, but the mind numbing back and forth with nary a scoring chance is a real snoozer. I'm sure many Americans feel this way about the game itself and is a major reason we haven't taken to it in larger numbers. Another major reason is lack of exposure. Many kids play youth soccer. It is hugely popular in the suburbs across the country, but it ends there. By the time kids are ready for high school, football and basketball (and hockey in the northeast) are the only sports getting lots of attention from students. These kids grow up and for them soccer is a distant memory, just kike it is for me.

BTW - It is Red Sox (not Socks) GO SOX!!!.

If they're going to treat us like criminals then we may as well live up to their expectations.

Good point. Not only that but some DRM practices provide incentive for criminal behavior.
I recently rented a DVD for my 4 y/o. Tried to play in the xbox.... screen came up with a progress bar: "Loading....."
Uh oh, I thought, what the hell is it loading? A few seconds later and a funny flicker, then nothing, dead, frozen. The little 4 y/o boy gets upset. Dad gets upset. WTF!?!?! We just wanted to watch the movie.
So I pop the crippled disc into my PC w/ DVD burner and thanks to the now illegal 3-2-1 software I can make an uncrippled copy. I feel justified in keeping the copy because of the time and effort required to overcome the DRM crap on the original rental. This is first time I've knowingly violated copyright laws - and I don't care. As you said - if they are going to treat me like a criminal, then so be it.

BTW - How do I turn off "autorun" on the xbox? Linux? LOL!

Bush & Co aren't done over there yet. Iran might be next.
Since China currently gets around 33% of its oil from Iran, they are not going to sit back and let us occupy that country. So, China with their huge military force marches in and It's ON!!!
If Iran follows through with the sabre-rattling and takes steps to "wipe Israel off the map", and Israel defends itself (or acts preemtively), China steps in, we go to Israel's aid and *_boom_* it's ON!!!!

North Korea might jump in too. Since their big burly bodyguard (China) is engaged, lob some nukes into South Korea, Japan and perhaps the west coast of the US.
The EU might not engage in hostilities right away, but they won't want to be left out of the oil (and power) grab when the dust settles.

A bit far-fetched? Democracy will not flourish in Iraq. They HATE us. They play along only as long as we are there. To them, democracy is the evil tool of the west. Things will get worse and worse. We are permanent residents of the mid-east now. If we leave Iraq, the best we can hope for is three theocracies (Shite, Sunni, Kurd). At worst, another dictator takes charge. If we leave Iraq we will move on to the next region (Syria, Iran, other), leaving Iraq in shambles like we did Afganistan. World scorn will increase seeing the messes we've made and somebody will step in to stop us. The troops aren't coming home.

The mid-east situation is getting worse and worse. Enough damage has been done to break inertia. There is no turning back. WW3 has already started.

  5. Irrational Numbers on Network-Monitoring Data Put to Music · · Score: 1

It might sound weird (yes, pun intended), but I've been wanting to put Pi, Phi, e, and other irrational numbers through different interpreters, including audio-generation.

My basic idea is to run calculations of of these values in base2 and then see what it "looks" like or hear what it "sounds" like when the stream of bits is interpretted in different ways.

I like the idea of a never ending song or story that never repeats. I fully expect gibberish and static when interpreting the bitstream, but I'd still like to try.

I have no idea how to go about such a thing, but it has been a curiosity of mine for a while now. Does anybody know if this has been done yet. Can anyone point me to relevant links?

It's the failure to find any really bankable, long-term, good quality acts that is the real problem for the record industry

I disagree. The "flash-in-the-pan", "one-hit-wonders" are by design. You'll rarely see another U2 or $SUPER_GROUP.

Why? The more popular/established a group or recording act becomes, the more leverage they have over their label. They are able to negotiate more lucrative contracts, or threaten to switch labels.

Newer bands, desperate to establish themselves don't have this luxury and often sign ripoff contracts just to get air time.

There is no shortage of supply for the labels. Many bands will sell themselves short just to get a record deal. Then, just before they go "bigtime", the label will sabotage the deal move on to the next sucker.

There are dozens of these bands. They all have a similar sound and the pattern of "prop them up" and "knock them down" is repeating.
    Cold Play
    Creed
    Goo Goo Dolls
    Third Eye Blind
    Three Doors Down
    Bare Naked Ladies
    Wheezer
...are just a few that come to mind - but sound alike

The instant hype followed by limited exposure is intentional. Disclaimer: I don't listen to pop rock, so my list above is off-the-top-of-my-head short. I'm pretty sure the same thing is going on with modern R&B and hip-hop.

Outrageous! You really need to talk to a public school teacher. My neighbors across the street are Boston Public School teachers. You simply cannot imagine the wild, deviant and criminal conduct they deal with on a day-to-day basis. Their accounts of day-to-day experiences are shocking.

Karen was assaulted by a student (stitches, bloddy nose). When the parent was brought in to discuss the situation both Karen and the principal were assualted by the parent. Now, Karen, the principal and BPS are all defendants in a law suit brought by this so-called parent.

This is just one example (a severe one) of the pure crap they are forced ot put up with. The parents are not helping. In many cases they are the cause of the problem. The unionized teachers that I know, spend 75% of class time trying to discipline the kids and create a learning environment. Sometimes this gets the teacher in trouble for disrespecting the student. I'm not making this up and BTW - we're talking about kids between 8 and 10 y/o.

Sorry about the OT post. Unenlightened parent needs to walk a mile in someone else's shoes.
