As for cursing in the workplace, I think it hurts the atmosphere. It may make the guy who just got off the phone with a dumb customer feel better to vent, but the dozen people who had to listen to his vehemence have all just had their days worsened a bit and everyone is a bit more on edge. We're human; harsh words and conflict make us feel bad.

When those harsh words are directed toward us, true. However, they may also give us opportunity for empathy-- if my co-worker's just let off a string of explicative that would make a dockside prostitute blush, I may get the clue that he's frusterated as all fuck, and see if there's anything that I can do to help. I'm less likely to do so if his language fails to convey the extent of his woes due to self-censorship.

That said, I also think that swearing is best in a more casual situation. I'm not keen on swearing in front of customers or during a formal presentation.

I don't really think there is a market for used cell phones or for used ipods...

On the contrary, there really is a market for used iPods, or there was a few years ago. I bought a used iPod for my wife's first mp3 player, and I had to be quick to respond to Craigslist ads, because they were going fast. People were selling their previous-generation iPods to get the current version, and plenty of people were happy to take advantage of that opportunity. Beneficial all around. I doubt this has changed terribly much.

Because I like more than a few hundred songs, and I have a life away from my computer. Because I can easily fill more than one 8GB iPod Nano with songs that I'd like to hear at any given notice. If I can't hear the difference between a 256kbps-encoded MP3 and the original WAV file, why waste disc / memory space?

I don't feel the need to listen at concert levels-- ever. I rarely go out to clubs because it's just too damned loud for my taste. That said, can't you appreciate the sound of a massively distorted kick drum? The gentle wup of a "normal" kick drum puts me to sleep. Give me a solid THUD any day. Something I can feel.

And I don't buy the argument regarding how the "artist" meant it one way or the other. Once it's out of the artist's studio and I've paid for it, it's damned well mine to do with what I like, including "correct" it. You don't like it? Don't do it to your copy.

Ah, I see! In my limited experience with CFLs, I've not had this happen, but I suppose not all are created equal. I have had this happen a LOT with non-compact fluorescents... in fact, I've got one right now that I need to replace the ballast to use, because it specifically wants some pre-heating variation.

  17. Re:How about LEDs then on Mercury Contamination Vs. Energy-Efficient Lightbulbs · · Score: 1

CF bulbs are not designed for short on cycles. They're a poor choice for a hallway where the light is only turned on for a minute or two, or in a laundry room.

I think you're mistaken. I know, because I watch TV! Mythbusters looked at lightbulb myths recently. Actually, I'm not sure what you have in mind when you say CFs are not "designed" for short cycles. If you mean that they will burn out faster, that's certainly possible, but I doubt it. If you're referring to power-up energy costs, CFLs' energy-savings start at 15 milliseconds, so it's generally OK to turn off the bulb.

Not that this has anything to do with Mercury...

These are some options I know of from the Pro Audio world. What sounds better than your built-in DACs is up to your ears. You might also look into a USB audio interface that someone makes Linux drivers for. You'd get a lot more than a DAC, but it might suit your ears and wallet better than some of the options above.
