    What they dont say, an Nvidia 7800 GT is twice as fast as an ATI 800, 140 bux or 100 bux, 40 bux buys a lot more power.

    Makes for a for an affordable screamer of an SLI rig, too. Also, I'm convinced Nvidia's drivers are so much better. I've regretted every ATI card I've ever tried, usually due to crappy drivers. Highly recommended.

    The local poor people, though desperate for jobs and rebuilding, are cut out by imported Mexican and Central American workers, mostly illegal, all subsidized by living cheap in their own countries when they leave. Imported by fat American contractors, also mostly from out of state.

    I live in NOLA, and I have to reply to this. It's a tough topic for me, because I still have a hang-up with the "illegal" part of "illegal immigrant". However, it's agonizingly clear that "the local poor people" by in large have no interest in working in rebuilding jobs. Yet there are no shortage of demonstrations for more and better rebuilt public housing--subsidized living on the cheap, not to mention endless whining about renewing government emergency aid programs. Meanwhile, the Latino workers who have flooded in are working their asses off to get the job done and make a living.

    Oh, yeah, one more thing: a sad number of the "locals" have returned only to engage in spectacularly bloody gang wars.

    It loaded just fine in Firefox for me, too. However, according to the timer in the Fasterfox extension, five loads of both averaged out to:

    Google - 0.235

    MS - 4.312

    As far from scientific as possible, but the lack of "pop" for MS was just annoying enough to be noticeable.

    I hate when they won't just leave the package.

    I have a similar predicament most of the time. If they won't leave it, I wish I could have all my shipments held at the local customer service desk, by default, and notify me I have something to pick up. All their wasted effort at delivering to my door seems pointless.

    Hire a CPA.

    Good advice for many. However, is it really cost effective for someone who is a non-homeowner, non-self employed, single, and childless? If you've got very straightforward, single-source income and simple investments, web filing makes a lot of sense.

    The odds of Joe sixpack going the extra step of making a 20 character key is not good. WiFi setups are all the rage and now can all be broken into even after you spend an hour telling someone that they have to use WEP.

    Sadly, who needs to break into anything when so many leave their front doors wide open? I just moved into a new appartment complex. While waiting for my cable to get turned on, I thought I'd scan for networks, just for the hell of it. F'ing amazing: five APs detected, one WEP (not WAP) secured, four open. Of the open ones, three hadn't even changed the defaults.

    I haven't been there in a few years, and realize it's closed for renovation now, but I recall they had small section in the exhibit that showed the cross-country movement from the lake. I believe they used tractors and a series of rollers to move it from the shore, through the park, and to the museum. Pretty cool.
    Awsome exhibit and terrific museum, BTW. Definitely a must-do when in Chicago!

    How much do you run? Is the mini holding up well? If it can take an hour-long run without a head crash or an explosion from the salt getting into it, I just may have to grab one.

    I've had my mini for three weeks now. Not, a super hard-core runner, but I average 25-30 miles a week, pace no slower than 7:30. I've found it to be absolutely amazing. The longest run I've used it on is about 45min and had absolutely no problems. Battery life is very good, the interface is absolutely perfect. Recommend buying the neoprene armband--very inobtrusive.

    It would make a LOUSY spam relay.

    A ship a sea, absolutely. However, bandwidth varies wildly by platform. Carriers (and a few others) have Challenge Athena which is some serious pipe.

    On the other hand, pierside, even the smallest ships quite often have T1 quality connections or better. While there are still excellent shore-side firewalls, a poorly managed shipboard network can be badly exploited.

    Amen (and I'll gladly share your flames)! Pretty much the only online site I use is MSN Maps & Directions. Most readable maps and accurate directions, by far.

    Downside? It chokes under Mozilla, Firebird and Opera (the legitimate browsers I've tried). It's one of the 3-4 sites I load IE for (among them my bank--that pisses me off!) But it gives great maps, and to M$N's credit, never has popups.

    That's all the way on the other side of Providence. I mean, that's like 20 minutes away!

    Too true! Two years in Newport now, and Providence might as well be a foriegn country.

    Just today I heard an older gentleman from West Warwick calling in on talk radio, explaining passionately why he never goes to Providence (which is barely a 15 min drive on local roads!)

    Stick it in the oven (not the microwave) on the higest temp for three hours, should demagnetize the platters nicely.

    I hope you've got very, very well ventilated kitchen, unless you really enjoy that melting plastic fumes high.

    If you can, spring for the N100, you won't regret it.

    The F4 is a beautiful, near-indistructable piece of hardware. However, both the autofocus and TTL flash metering are several generations old.

    Of course, the application and your style of photography should decide. But if you're looking for any level of automation, the F4 (spectacular for its time) will disappoint. By current standards, it seems just barely more competent than my beloved F3 bodies.

    Unfortunately, it's not just garage-based operations like these guys.

    I help my landlord out with computer issues whenever I can (well worth it). About a year ago, he bought a Dell Dimenision 4300 (I believe). For some reason, they managed to sell him a P4 1600 machine running XP Professional with only 128MB of RAM!!!

    Naturally, the P.O.S. took 10 minutes to boot, and went swap-file nuts just to run Calculator--forget about Word.

    Needless to say, he was extremely grateful when I convinced him to toss in another 256MB and he saw the difference. Dell hosed him bad.

    I've lived in RI (Newport) for almost two years now, all of it with Cox Cable. I routinely get 350 KB/s down, and (perceived) reliability is well over 99.5%. For a while, they were a great deal at $35/month, a few months ago they raised to $40 but gave existing customers 3 extra months at $35. Also while "unlimited" technically means a 30GB cap, I know I've busted that quite often, but never heard a peep out of them.

    I'm very happy with Cox, and don't hesitate to recommend them as long as you can live without a fixed IP.

    is it possibly conscievable that, if EVERY mac owner (on average) is going to spend some bux on the music store, that Apple can actually subsidize the price of the hardware, and create a circle of more-and-more sales?

    It seems the game console model would be pretty clever in the case of the iPod, the only fear being future models locking in proprietary formats (AAC only?) Extrememly unlikely, but perhaps neccessary with subsidized hardware.

    Brings up a good question, though. Does anyone know what the current margin is on an iPod?

    why would the leave out the bluetooth connectivity?
    I think that bluetooth would be more valuable than a flashlight, or the thermometer.

    It's a shame, I aggree.

    While I love gadgets, cell phones are one of the few places I'm practically a Luddite. Give me tiny, long battery life, great sound quality, and an easy to program and use phone book. That's all I need. Almost everything else is a poor compromise for much more capable devices.

    However, the one "gadgety" thing that intrigues me is Bluetooth--I would love to use a light, wireless headset/earpiece.

    My trusty 8260 is getting a little long in the tooth and I'd love to replace it, but there's almost nothing out there that really appeals to me at any price.

    IANAL, but it sure as hell sounds like whatever Napster was legally responsible for will apply to Hummer Winblad (what a silly, cool name). They were hardly silent partners.

    I love archiving just about everything I download, just I like collecting DVDs and CDs. At $1/GB or less, why the hell not?

    You never know when a random Milli Vanilli or Vanilla Ice song will crack someone up!

    I thought it was a crappy idea 10 years ago--pretty funny that it's still in use today. I took pride in the all-cash (occasionally no-cash) ethic as a student. It's strangely satisfying when your paranoia is justified.

    Building access?!? I used to love walking into pretty much any random academic building at 2AM to study (or at least get some sensation back in my extremities). Now it sounds like the Pentagon!

    Amen on the semi-final game, though. Still, what a great f*#%ing season! The BC game was unreal....
