actually, I was sort of expecting the "our shit don't stink attitude." I realize you said that in jest, but I think that an os fanatic who hasn't touched either would has a warp...er, different point of view- something we could learn from. I'd also like to throw grandmothers on that list. From what I've seen, they take to computers pretty fast, depending on the grandma. I'd like to have some try linux and give their impressions.
I'm not saying we dumb down linux for newbies, I just suggest it as food for thought.
I've found the easiest way to convert people to mozilla is use the modern theme, turn off popups, and switch icons from mozilla to the IE's blue 'E'. Tell people that you upgraded their web browser so they won't get all those stupid little popups- that's why it looks all new and shiny. run them through it a couple of times, and introduce them to tabs.
Openoffice has a little ways to go before that happens but I did have one instance where someone asked me if I knew of a replacement of MS office. Apparently he was using a pirated version and it crashed and crashed and crashed some more. He tried reinstalling, but that didn't seem to help. He couldn't even open a file before it crashed.
So I uninstalled MS Office, did a virus scan and scrubbed most of his system, then installed openoffice. Haven't heard a complaint since.
Now, whether it was a corrupted version of Office or just the viruses, I don't know. I do know that he seems to be happy and hasn't complained yet.
I was just proud because in one fell swoop, I destroyed some viruses, stopped some piracy, pushed the OS Agenda, and got a Political Science major asking "so what is this linux thing anyways?"
what better way to hide the fact that they are microsoft's puppet?
/me adjusts his tinfoil hat
seriously- if, theoretically, sco was recieving financial help or even taking orders from microsoft as part of some massive conspiracy plot, the best way to hide the plot is to convice people that microsoft is their next target. As long as microsoft and sco have an agreement stating otherwise, sco can spout as much fluff as they want without fear of REAL backlash from microsoft.
Who benefits? well, microsoft has a scapegoat(sco) and looks innocent. SCO gets bought out my IBM or microsoft(as incentive) and the people in charge at sco, who's business is failing, get large payouts.
We all know that microsoft is running scare of linux. We all know that SCO has no real sustainable business plan, mainly because of poor business ractices, but it could be blamed on linux.
Common enemies create strange bedfellows.
I'd be interested in seeing the accounting records of SCO, and who they're getting all their cash from for unix licenses. I'd also like to see mcbribe's financial records to see if he recieved any "consulting fees" from microsoft.
You know what would clear up the US patent problem? Have the USPO give a $100 reward for each reported and documented prior art on a patent that would invalidate the patent. It would get rid of most of these crap patents, and give us unemployed geeks something to do for fun.
That would rock.

My girlfriend's the same way, only hers is turning WHITE. she's 23 now and will be mostly white by the time she's 30. It runs on both sides of her family.
Fortunately for her, she's not going into the IT field, so she has little to worry about.
I could see upgrading a production server if the kernel enhancements improve disk IO. If there's some benefit, then try it- however, use a test system first. Also, wait a while before you install it- make sure there aren't any nasty bugs that are found a week or two down the road.
I still don't understand why he's running a RC on a production server. that's a Bad Idea. Since you are running an RC, you'd probably be better off with the 2.4.21 release.
as has been repeated many times, this is not a global site. it's an US site run by people in the US. Hemos and company are from michigan (originally), which is in EST. if they want to use it, their choice.
While I agree that it would have been nice to have utc for those in other countries, I get sick of people bitching at the american websites for thinking in familiar terms. Ever notice how they list stuff in terms of USD? that's cause that's what they have in their piggy bank.
Quit being so fricking politically correct- I hate people that pull that crap./me apologizes for the flame
I highly suggest creating a new user before attempting that- you'll gind that after a minute or so that you can do serious damage to an account.(deleteing desktop icons, etc.)
I'd like to see IBM, EFF, Redhat, Suse, and whoever else file a counter class-action lawsuit or something like that. Lets face it- if you can get a handful of large corporations together to defend one of their competitors, THAT's gotta say something.
also, if IBM stole linux code, that should be easy enough to track through public records- if the code was in linux before IBM jumped on the bandwagon, then that proves IBM's innosence.
At this point it amounts to libel or something. They're tarnishing the reputation of IBM and Linux, and everyone who sell linux is going to have their sales hurt as well by this frivilous lawsuit.
if your legally obliged to do something for the court, and their contract keeps you from doing it- hence the contract forces you to break the law- doesn't that make the contract itself null and void?
I seem to remember somewhere that contracts can't be enforced if it requires a partymember to break the law.
"SCO is the owner of the UNIX Operating System Intellectual Property that dates all the way back 1969, when the UNIX System was created at Bell Laboratories. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, SCO has acquired ownership of the patents, copyrights and core technology associated with the UNIX System. " -source
Do they actually own ANY patents or copyrights associatesed with the Unix system? right here, off of their own page, they claim to.
YAY! another Believer! Most people run away when I tell them that the penguins at the zoo told me to start stocking up on canned spam, shotgun shells, blank CD-R's, and toilet paper.

Smart/small eiffel for linux. keep in mind that our professor was a complete bitch, and had a superiority complex.
she needed a leg up on us to answer our questions, so it's possible she didn't tell us about any internal documentation because she would lose her position of power(yes, this sound paranoid, but we learned to expect this kind of behavior from her.)
I found a couple of the source files for classes while browsing online, but they were severely lacking in description of what the functions DID.
I don't even think our president knows what opensource is. You ask Bush what he thinks about opensource and I'm sure he'll go into a story of why they're bad and how he got opensource once from kissing a farm animal.
In all seriousness, I think this is a very good thing. Last time I checked, India had a larger population than wyoming. If their tech school starts churning out linux guys, their country will eventually turn to linux, and there will be much rejoicing
For a Programming Languages class we covered eiffel. nearly everyone who took the class walked away with a bad experience. Why? Because of the documentation. If you want eiffel to be more widely used, I highly suggest someone writing some decent documentation. Perhaps a searchable database of object, along with description of what the objects do and what their functions do.
That was my only real complaint. the current documentation sucks.
only on Slashdot can a point be proven by having " an intense game of chess" break into a fist fight:)
in all seriousness, I hope the little weasels roast. they went about it all the wrong way. if you get that kinda power, you build yourself a couple of avatars and go interact with the people, pose riddles to players, rewarding them if they pass and penalizing them if they fail.maybe offer them a parfait. everyone loves a parfait.
Yes, it's still wrong and illegal and immoral, but it woulda been more entertaining to the players.
I personally would have went out looking for playerkillers and extracting a little vengence:)
on a side note, I think this hack might actually help business- before this, I had never heard of the game. anyone else in the same boat?
sco: "hey bill, if ya help us validate our claims against IBM, we'll get rid of all these nasty documents..." bill: "I could crush you so fast It wouldn't be funny. Don't mock us." sco: "it'll help save your ass against linux in the long run...." bill: "where do I sign?"
My guess is the conversation went something like that. everyone seems to have the sneaking suspicion that microsoft and SCO are in cahoots, but it's all circumstancial evidence.
I wonder if there's another part of the story that is still hidden... something that will cause REAL problems in a month or two.
well, think of it this way.... suppose the promoters said "ok, now all of your programs need to be in COBOL, no exceptions!"
do you think they might be limiting their audience a little. the point is creativity isn't limited to one language. they're looking for a new game, something that hand't been tried before. Don't cut their feet off by forcing them into one language.
you sound like one of those grumpy old men that bitch at "the kids with their damned rock music"
As for real world experience, limiting the language is just rediculous. Yes, in the real world, you get a job and you might only be allowed to use one language. however EVERY real world job doesn't use just one language. Don't shaft the people who know c++ just because you think it should be done in java, or vice versa.
Hell, although it's not comparable, I made a blackjack game in ruby just for shits and giggles.
the language that they choose shouldn't matter. it comes down to using the right tool for the job. for some it's c++, or other's it's haskell, java or perl.
oh, and another point- you say to limit it to platform. Well, reading through the posts, one of the teams says they wrote it for solaris, linux and windows. So you're saying that they should have limited it to one platform? which one? you say windows and you'll probably piss of a lot of slashdotters. you say linux and it'll never make it mainstream.
Let them do what they want to do. if they make a great game, fine, if they don't, oh well. Let it be their choice.
actually, I was sort of expecting the "our shit don't stink attitude."

Actually, what I'd like to see is some OSX fanatics compare and contrast linux and windows.
That would be interesting.

yeah, but life is actually ENTERTAINING.
ok, well, perhaps not entertaining, but this is definately laughable.
