I wouldn't worry about lawsuits from uploading shit to the service, i've done my best to upload *something* but havn't gotten anywhere, theres no help file and they are suggesting i simply drag the file onto my browser window.
I was skeptical but thought maybe it was some crazy flash magic... so I tried, but nope, as expected it doesnt do shit, I even tried it in IE!
Hmm! Interesting comment, I can see where your coming from here.
I've never been to "spar" (I don't live in the US), most convience stores here sell things that teenagers would like to buy (nachos), and the legal age for purchasing both booze and cigarettes here is 18, but nobody seems to check id, ever. I've seen 10 year olds purchasing smokes.
But as you said, its not an ideal solution, but I'm sure the guy that invented it will make some money, and thats what really matters:P
What i'm trying to understand here is why would a shop owner want to use this device? Yes having youths standing around stealing shit is an issue, however youths have MONEY, the 16-25 demographic is a huge money source.
old enough to have jobs, often still living at home, shitloads of cash, no responsibility. Why on earth would you want to lose that market?
The spyware guys might not care about linux.. but the botnet guys do:)
Run an insecure/out of date linux distro and you'll be part of a botnet pretty quickly... Its not really that linux is more secure or windows is less secure, a linux newbie is likely to be compromised, as is a windows newbie.
I work for a company that provides bulk SMS services, group messaging etc.
We send on average 300 messages per minute, and we only service about 2000 clients, I know of several other large companies in this state alone (in western australia) who are doing the same. It should be noted that H3G *DOES* have rate limiting on their bulk SMS services (we get rate limited during the peak hours of the day and have our own cellular modems to pickup the slack during these times).
The question is, why is it restricted to Mannhattan exactly? Is there only one huge cell site in the entire area? It just seems silly, to say that only one geographic area would be effected this way.
If anyone has some insight into the way this works, I would be happy to hear about it!
Of course developers shouldn't be subject to the same restriction as the average user. We need higher level access in order to do our job, its that simple. On the other hand for the average user non-restricted access can actually hurt their ability to perform their job, as they introduce non-supported software into the enviroment it will lead to speed/reliability issues on their workstation etc.
Well, if your willing to deal with a minor drop in quality you can simply re-encode the stream when you have a valid license.
Its not a perfect solution by any means, but it does the job with only a minor loss in quality, and lets face it, most people already deal with that loss of quality. (DVD to DVDR, DVD to XVID, CD to MP3, etc)
VLC & Winamp have this ability, as I'm sure others do.
From what I understand the sites targeted were topsites, rather than p2p sites aimed at the masses.
For those who don't understand what the difference is a topsite is an ftp which receives a release from a group, from the top site it is distrubted to many other ftps and finally onto usenet and the p2p networks.
The sites at the top were targeted, not the sites that most people have access to.
Your comment is valid and raises the point that biometics should be used as part of a three factor identification system.
1) Something you know (password/login) 2) Something you have (token, keycard, secureid, proxy card etc) 3) Something you are (biometric)
This allows for duress passwords as well as the use of biometics to increase the strength of an authentication system, rather than replace it completely.
I too was confused with this "Sender ID". Thinking, hey how is this different from SPF? However if you take a look at the microsoft website on sender id, under the "Technology" header it explains that SPF is the same thing as Sender ID.
This seems like an attempt by microsoft to have the cure for spam associated with the name "microsoft". A very interesting tactic.
As for SPF not solving the spam problem, no it wont, however it does mean that I dont receive 200-300 "delivery failed" messages per day from spammers using from addresses within my domain names. I have implemented SPF for my domains, and it has saved me some headaches (no more delivery failed messages!), but I still receive 500+ spam messages a day which my spam filter catches 99.9% of.

It's worth nothing that the laser in the MX1000 doesn't emit visible light:) (at least mine doesn't).
Yeah... I have dermatitis, basically when my skin is exposed to soap (the skin on my hands is more susceptible to this) it starts to "peel" off and the skin does not recover for 4-6 weeks. I avoid soap as much as possible, the non soap alternatives are quite expensive however.
When I am exposed to soap it causes a lot of problems with fingerprint scanners for me. So yeah, cards are a better option for people with my condition.
Why not go for something like card + hand geometry identification if they're so concerned with people "sharing" gym memberships.

Why not just use an app like VNC to allow remote connection to your pc?
$320? wtf man.... This is a price for a hard disk at my local australian PC store.
"HDD WESTERN DIGITAL 320GB 7200RPM 8MB $223"
or if you want to go notebook size
"HDD 60GB 2.5" NOTEBOOK HD $155"
That price is in AUD$ by the way, If your paying $320 for a 60GB hard disk. I think you're getting ripped off pretty badly man!
The point he was making is that DeCSS isnt required to copy a DVD, only to watch it.

My pioneer drive is region locked :(
Who do I talk to about getting that one fixed? :P

It would seem logical to let them use the developer image most of the time, allow them to use the corporate image if they wish.
However they could have access to a shell on a remote box to check email/use cal etc.
Seems quite logical!

Maybe not an isp, but this device would be great for universitys, slap one in the roof of each building and your set!
Many routers can auto detect which ports are being used for uplink and which are to devices etc. Shouldn't be a problem.
I am currently trying to overcome this addiction, by only downloading shit I actually want/will watch/play but... it's just not working out that way.
:(
I see my unused bandwidth and it just seems like such a waste
Quite often the demo will own, while the full game isn't so great. For example, the battlefield 2 demo ran wonderfully, no crashes, absolutly great...
Paid for the retail version and... crashes ahoy! While I do not condone piracy, I can empathise with the GP poster.

Loss of profits/business is not theft, it is legally defined as loss of profit.

It would be excellent to see a greasemonkey script with this functionality.
:)
Maybe a possible pulldown box next to each auction listing with the cost of each sort of shipping etc.
Hmm... maybe after exams
This is what he was refering to.
Good comment, however the contest is not being run by MS :)
