Actually there are too many falsehoods and half truths to be drawn by your statements. Is that a facile reply?
A code of ethics for a group gives a cost to breaking it, and an expectation of keeping to it. There are no [well few] absolutes, banning something is a last resort, and usually just encourages its uptake.
Ethics allows people to make assumptions about members of a group to associate a cost with breaking reasonable rules of behavior. The rules are higher than general lowest common denominator rules of society. It is about trust, branding even.
Ok I wrote that out before seeing your post. A Christian will need to rationalize their actions in how they appear to themselves and others. A slashdot reader will also be mostly stereotype compliant, or else the stereotype is broken:). I am wandering off the point.
What you are implying is that everything is up for grabs, within (maybe) legal restraint. Well sort of, but society is more than that, from a clique of friends, to political or national allegence, there is a system of costs and benefits to associations and few absolutes.
Freedom of speech is matched by a freedom to ignore, or attempt to filter that which is worth listening to.
I do repeat myself, [I do at least rephrase] or is repitition against the rules?
It is to say the society/subculture/union is aspirational, it is not just directly for the groups own good, there are ethics which make the groups presence felt, that having the grouping is of use. Its a vision/mission statement thing. Money is not everything, [but no money is nothing].

For comparison assume Open Office cost $0 utility $0:
MSWord/Excel cost $300 , utility $600 [20 hours saved in not learning another 'non MS standard' piece of software at $30 dollars an hour] in Eastern Europe the utility is $200 dollars [ 20 hrs @ $10 an hour] so it is better to put up with spending a few hours learning Open Office, then pay for MSWord/Excel at full price.
Open Office gets a WIN.. but
Microsoft 'wins'/cheats:) by having pirate MS Word/Excel available at $50, making MS Word/Excel the more lucrative option by $150.
Microsoft would secretly love to carpetbomb Eastern Europe, Russia, China etc. with their software.
People learn to use Microsoft and end up paying later, or encouraging other people to use microsoft through a network effect ('everyone uses Word/Excel'). If Microsoft software was available only at full price they would be more likely to try other alternative. The main battle is for mindshare not dollars.
Piracy allows microsoft to effectively sell cheap, without being accused of dumping.

Hopefully the amount of open source software will reach (has reached?) a stage that a living can be made in configuring it for the user. I think this is closest to happening in custom html form based applications, where a consultant can charge by the hour to deliver an open source based custom solution. It may not be rocket science or a geeky new development, just bread and butter work to pay the bills AND expand the use of open source, the consultant can help open source by fixing/reporting bugs found and open sourcing their minor extensions and configurations.
People should enter the political arena and all views should be rationalised and criticed - both internally and externally to the groups concerned. The world is a big negociation, what worked in the north of Ireland [big political fudge that most people voted for] may work elsewhere (even in the U.N., come on guys pay up).
Force people to examine and justify their and their opponents beliefs as part of a negociating position. Keeping U.S. 'intelligence' secret is against the politicial process, let the U.S. Intelligence fights it out with other peoples (even non US) rationalised view of the world.
