HUMAN WATTAGE: Infineon has developed a thermo-generator chip that can produce enough electricity to run a watch, using the difference between the body's temperature and the surrounding air.
That sounds pretty awesome, up there with the self winding watch idea i think:P
I actually have to stop, and ask myself this question. If mods get only 5 +/- mod changes per post, who would waste them on a post that WANTS AMD to succeed considering their processors are cheaper, and up until recently when intel beat them out (but of course no longer..) faster and more overclockable?
I think they should make a change to the mod system so users can see who has the balls to mod down posts like mine on a popular forum filled with programmers and computer geeks alike who tend to build their own systems (there needs to be a poll on slashdot about who uses amd as opposed to intel).
So please, Mr. Anonymous Coward/Moderator, do tell who you are.
Unfortunatly the problem isn't that the average home user wouldn't purchase it. The problem is Microsoft is going to get this into writing, it will hit the markets, and it will flood the pc market. Joe won't know the difference because Joe doesn't usually buy Mom 'n Pop PC3000. To make matters worse, the Microsoft/PC Manfacturer liscenses practically force every large company that makes PCs to spit out a Windows Box with Pd, or else they threaten to stop liscensing that company windows -- which unfortunatly is suicide for most companies because of the monopoly Microsoft has on the market.
This isn't going to be a consumer choice I fear. It's been evident for awhile that big greedy corporations don't care about consumers but only the shareholders.
Carmack said in one of his interviews that all his engine has been since quake 1 has been a variation on the same theme.
The difference with this engine is one major fact: Carmack is no longer using hacks to produce lighting effects. The lighting you see in those pictures is done on the fly without hacks. So you'll see more accurate and more detailed shadows and lighting. Perhaps the quality of graphics and AA will improve as well. But compare those two screenshots to quake3 and quake2, you won't see shadows that vivid in most 3d games out right now, and i think that's quite next-gen.
What happens if you take one of these "copy protected" files that won't play in WPM and play it in winamp? Is it locked out by Windows or just WMP.
With winamp3 now supporting media files and a much better playlist editor, i don't see why people would use windows media player.
Yeah it has some purdy things like cd ripping and writing, but i'd not trust microsoft to do this for me. besides even with the mp3 pack i still couldn't get it to rip anything but wma files.
Is it just me or do i speak for everyone when i say STOP RELEASEING THIS RETARDED FLASH MEMORY BASED MP3 PLAYERS. i do NOT want to hear the same 10 songs over and over. The best you can get in flash right now is 256mb i think, and you will pay out the *ass* for that much flash memory.
I think the iPod and the nomad proved that hard disk based mp3 is the way to go, because i won't touch another mp3 player for the rest of my days unless it's at least 5 gigs.
Look at the benchmarks for PHP vs ASP lately, it usually outperforms it.
i'm sure C is faster, but i haven't read a thing on java servlet pages and how it performs speedwise. I actually thought java servlets would be slower than php but i could be wrong.
My friend Steve at RIT Made the best case mod I've ever seen.
It was simplistic, yet functional.
It was well ventelated
And you could also see all the computer parts just like this one.
It's called the "no case" case mod. Instead of fooling around with all those screws and metal, just get some unused college books and cool the computer/yourself with a nice rotating fan.
Sure wish I had a picture, I had to hold back the laughter everytime I went into his dorm room:).
I'd love to attend the meeting in Rochester, considering I'm in Syracuse which is right near by. The problem is I, like many people, have a JOB and can't just decide to drive somwhere a few hours away on a mid week day. The one in Syracuse, to boot, is cancelled because not enough people signed up.
Wouldn't be a bad idea to move this to a weekend day, I'm sure more people would attend.
Do you use a commercial tool like Lightwave or SoftImage, or do you use a homegrown solution like Pixar studios (or lucas arts, etc)? Do you need people on staff to do regular updates to the software suite you use if you do use a custom one?
I've heard horror stories about 2.4 ghz wireless with devices like a microwave or 2.4 ghz phone being used at the same time as your internet connection. Granted we wouldn't have that problem off the bat with 5ghz, since there aren't any devices that are using this band, but what happens when everyone and their mother uses the 5ghz band and clogs it like 2.4 can be clogged so eaisly now?
Before anyone starts bashing J# to say that it should have never been created and M$ is the anti-christ and bla bla bla.. There are a few good reasons.
No matter what you may think, people will accually program in.net. It's not that bad. It's accually a HUGE improvement to programming RAD apps in windows. The best RAD development for windows prior to this was VB or Delphi, and I Think C# is a good compromise between C++, Java, and VB. They tried to capture the syntax of java with the flexibility of c++ and the RAD capabilities of VB. In general it was a good idea. The reason having J# is such a good thing is i can now take the code i've already written for java, put it in a project and compile it as a windows dll. Lets say I wrote an extensive library for software in Java and wanted to port it to a windows app i'm working on a year+ down the line, then it will come in real handy.
What microsoft fails to realize is that the idea of coding in J# by itself is ludicrus because The whole point of Java is it's ALREADY cross platform, and just like.NET it runs on VM. J# is for those people who have already coded in java and want to use it in a windows only project. If you just read between the lines it's Microsoft's sleezy way to try and bring more attention to Windows and.NET in general. More a convience and marketing ploy than anything people will pratically use.
Worst case you could just not learn C# in general and write it all in Java, but this is mixing java and the.NET framework, which i'd rather keep separate.
Perhaps if your computer was a 1700 athlon like mine, it wouldn't have any problems with java. like i said, in MODERN systems. No offense but 533mhz is about 1-2 years old.
It's not the stone age anymore, and we don't need to squeeze every single bit of resources out of modern systems to get them to perform well. Java has gotten to the point that it's fast enough to do just about anything but 3d games or hardcore graphics. If your program does not need to do either of those two, then java will save you development time, and porting time. Java does have it's pitfalls in that you can't take advantage of certain built in features of an OS designed to make it more UI friendly (like the windows system tray) or many other examples.
If it comes down to that: sit down, whip out the C code, and use the java native interface to integrate the OS specific C code into the java program.
As the program developer said, it has the added benefit of a great backing of network and threading capabilities, not to mention swing (the most exenstive and easily manipulated UI API I've seen). C is ugly, non OOP, and lacks modern productivity features like a well designed and documented library as easy to use as javas.
Flame me all you want, but C is for console junkies or Doom III.
The problem is on one hand you have to consider it as a Role Playing game. Don't take this out of the context of "Real life" because some people get far too into RP in these games I think.
If some script kiddie is pissing you off just move on, it IS a game afterall. And I would know as well as the author, the games can be addictive and all, but the fact that you'd start saying "Man, I have over $1500 in rares and skills if I sold my acount" means you think about it a little too much.
The point of the games in the end is to have a little fun, even if you do have to ignore a few morons.
What exactly is keeping it from happening? Money is just money. It would be more of an issue of red tape. You sure are optomistic, you must work for RIAA:)
Why? Because they decided to cap our bandwidth from 500kb/s down and 100kb/s up to 250kb/s down and 50kb/s. They had no reason to do this other than the fact that they didn't feel like upgrading and expanding their network to accomidate for the increased number of users and large bandwidth consumption.
I remember when all those tech articles were boasting that the rate of broadband users joining the bandwagon was going to go up and up and yet it's peaked at a standstill, in fact, my service as I just said has accually gotten WORSE. I'm sure a large portion of it has to do with the @home cable company going under, and giving control back to the cable companies who now want to jack the prices and screw the users ridding on the wave of the future.
This situation probably won't improve for awhile because companies like the RIAA and MPAA want to keep home users's bandwidth lower to control the "mass epidemic" of spreading illegal media. By now we could have had the whole country wired in T1 if some private organiations would get off their ass, lay the wire, and force the prices to drop by saturating the market. So expect congress to be lobbied to the stone age until Microsoft's DRM gets through the cracks.
Then I can GUARANTEE that the RIAA and MPAA will even back up the companies who want to push for better broadband, so they can liscense more music/movies to users at more absurd prices than ever.
That sounds pretty awesome, up there with the self winding watch idea i think

All my hardcore AMD convert friends were starting to get pissed when AMD was slacking behind, so they said they were going to go P4.
:)
Thank God I can rub it back in their faces again. Hopefully Toms Hardware will have a benchmark comparason before the day's over

Not much of a sense of humor me thinks... :)
There also used to be an easter egg on jeeves if you asked him "Is jeeves well endowed?" It gave a similar 403 - None of your business. error
Apparently this webpage has gone to the digital dark age as well, because the server just got slashdotted by a bunch of hooligans armed with modems.
If you don't t hink the Bill Gates Borg icon is hilarious then you shouldn't be reading slashdot :)

This would be even better if all the distros could get together and post news on here as well.
I always did find it confusing to have to visit a ton of sites to find up to date info.
