one would think that they would have some requirement against useless cruft in the patent filing. if they don't they should, then you can deny patents on the basis that the document they submitted was unacceptable.

I don't know, I remember the internet getting really slow on 9/11. most Internet news sites were also down for most of the day due to the load of users. I am not really sure if the internet is prepared for what will happen again if a world event took place. (Aliens landing??, nukes used against Iraq?) who knows if the Internet will cope.

  5. Re:Great Article... on Janis Ian on the Internet Debacle · · Score: 0

Getting older artists speaking out against the lables when they have nothing to lose is not going to accomplish anything in the long run. All this type of article does (no matter how well written, and i admit that it is very well done) is to rekindle debate on the issue, and not even among people who matter. Lets face it, if we are discussing this on slashdot then we are not discussing it in Ottawa or Washington. Writting letters to congress or the senate is also worse than useless. Any letter that even sounds like it is fighting for the little person is filed in the "crazy file" and anything comming from national lobby groups are filed in the "wishes of America" file.

I don't think that microsoft is going to care that a bunch of slashdot users won't purchase their OS. They are mostly concerned with the corporate world where a company might like an OS that prevents you from installing any software that is not digitally signed properly (certian peer to peer software for example). additionally schools and government would also like this software for the control that it gives them. schools already treat their students like criminals who just haven't committed crimes yet after all, no more special tweaking with third party software to lock down a lab, just install palladium. Microsoft will definetly make money with this, Linux will increasingly become the OS of choice for freedom, and then if things really get out of hand, just being associated with LInux will brand you a criminal.

this is an impractical device, a better one would be a phone placed on your jawbone so that you could click a switch somewhere to turn it on and off.

Is to do nothing at all. The people who are hacking their Xboxs are voiding any warrenty that they may have had on the machine, and M$ is therefore not out anything if all these hacked xboxs start turning up fried out because of some botched mod job. Just come out with a statement that people who want to watch movies on the xbox can purchase a "special" mod from M$ that lets them do this....and it only costs $19.95! WOW.

lets not delude ourselves, we really live in a dictatorship that we get to choose who our dictator is every 4 years. freedom of expression and speech are not rights that we are entitled to just because we are alive, we get these things becuase our leaders genuinely care about our happiness (most of the time). real criminals are the ones who abuse the freedoms that the gov't has decided to grant us as citizens. These people are the ones who ruin the good things that gov't has given to the rest of us. However its foolish to believe that if there were no bad people in the world then there would be no problems, life isn't like startrek. as long as there are laws that protect people there will be people who will try and break those laws. its good that the supreme court has decided to uphold the consumer in this ruling, too much favoritism towards the artists and associations that (help?) them.
